Feeling Down and Depressed?

By

Photo: img.ehowcdn.com

Depression hurts. We all feel sad from time to time, but when a person is suffering from depression constantly, it hurts. Depression is a serious mental disorder that many take too lightly, but the truth is, depression is deadly. People with major depressive disorders have committed suicide, taking their own lives. Thus, when someone is suffering with depression it is important to give thorough consideration to what the person is saying.
People with depression lose hope, and often feel like the world has caved in on them, thus making it difficult to concentrate and cope with daily life. It gets worse when a person depressed feels that no one cares or is listening to what they have to say.
I lost a dear friend to depression. The warning signs were ignored. In the small rural area I lived in, my friend owned a glass shop. He was an alcoholic and struggling with depression. One day, he used his handgun to shoot himself, and when he failed, he staggered across the street to the police department and convinced them it was an accidental shooting. They believed him. I knew that this was the first warning sign. I instantly headed to my friends house once he was admitted from the hospital after being treated for his chest wound.
I encouraged him; I did everything within my power to persuade him to get help, and even offered to stay with him. Nothing I did worked. Later, my friend said he was going hunting, telling his family he would be back soon. I knew that was a lie when another friend of mine told me. That day, he shot himself in the head, a few days later he died.
Depression hurts not only those suffering, but those who are hurt by actions such as suicide. It is appalling that few people hear the "Silent Cries of" these "Victims" who silently suffer. It is time to wake up people, have them take notice. If someone you know suffers depression there is help for these people. They do not have to suffer alone.
Programs such as Cognitive Behavioral therapy are available online. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a helpful technique that helps the patient focus on thoughts and behaviors that causes the depression. By looking closely at these thoughts and behaviors, a person can spot irrational thoughts, and learn to deal with ruminating, hopeless thoughts more effectively. There is help.
Signs of depression
• Isolation
• Drinking frequently
• Loss of interest in activities
• Loss of interest in friends and family
• Feeling hopeless
• Deep sadness
• Insomnia
• Loss of concentration
• Fatigue
• Excessive sleeping patterns
• Weight gain or loss
• Excessive guilt
• Reoccurring suicidal thoughts
Depression is no joke. If you know someone who is suffering with depression, help them get emotional support.

Tips to Handle Worry

By

Photo: myhealthnewsdaily.com

There are always new stressors, changes and unknowns that suck enjoyment out of our lives. The ability to channel your daily energy into productive tasks, instead of being siphoned off by the rumination, anxiety and depression that come with worry is key to living to your fullest potential. I would like to discuss a few strategies that I have found useful to stay productive and mitigate worry.
Stay Focused
Did you know that when your mind wanders, it has a better chance of bringing you a negative thought rather than a positive one? By simply keeping your mind focused on the present will go a long way to avoid unpleasant and unproductive thoughts. It is easier to keep your mind from wandering when you are involved in a project - especially an enjoyable one. Try to put yourself in those situations. When you cannot, try focusing on your surroundings. Take notice of life's details that often go overlooked such as the people and things around you. This will help keep your mind from wandering. Our feelings, both good and bad, are a direct result of what we think. You have complete control over our thoughts, so choose them wisely.
Today is What's Important
Today is the tomorrow we worried about yesterday. ~Author Unknown
Yesterday happened, tomorrow is not here yet, so all we really have is today. A common source of worry is using too much mental energy on the past or future. This is not to say that you should not plan for the future or take into consideration things from the past, but many of us spend too much time worrying about what has happened or what could happen. Try to take the unknowns of life and put them on the back burner of your mind, instead of actively trying to play out every scenario. You will be surprised about how many times answers will come to you when you are able to do this.
Three Step Strategy to Avoid Worry
He is something you can do right now to reduce worry. Most worry is caused by the fear of the unknown. Let me challenge you to do the following when faced with an anxiety provoking situation.
Step 1: Ask yourself, "What's the worst that can happen?" In other words, look for the worst case scenario of your current situation.
Step 2: Accept that the worst case scenario is going to happen.
Step 3: Prepare a plan to make the best of the worst case scenario.
Once you have done these steps, there is no need to let your mind ruminate over a situation of unknowns. You have already made a plan for the worst, anything else that happens is better than the situation for which you are already mentally prepared.
The next time you find yourself anxious, I encourage you to practice the techniques discussed in this article. Hopefully, it will get your mind off what is troubling you, keep you productive, happy and able to better deal with the life's worries.

How Your Anxiety Affects Your Mind And Your Physical Body

By

Photo: 4.bp.blogspot.com

Our response to anxiety is the normal reaction to anything that happens that we recognize to be a threat to us or those close to us. Some of the stimulating effects of this response can be good for us but if our anxious awakening is excessive and unrealistic pertaining to the situation we are faced with, then our heightened levels of anxious arousal will take its toll on our health. In fact over time giving our minds constant fight or flight messages can and will do life-threatening damage to our physical bodies.
Here is a list of some of the things that happen to our physical bodies during increased anxiety or a panic attack, remember these things happen every time our anxiety exceeds normal healthy levels.
  • Skin: Our sweat glands immediately start working to lower our core temperature in case we need to run or stand and fight.
  • Breathing: Our lungs start working harder and faster, forcing the oxygen in which will be needed by the muscles to perform well.
  • Heart: Our heart starts to beat faster and harder, raising our blood pressure and pulse beyond normal levels.
  • Immune System: With all our major organs on high alert, fighting germs takes a back seat and our immune cell system slows right down leaving us open to attack.
  • Cognition: Our brain anticipates the worst possible outcome, going into override and we start to feel impending doom.
  • Digestion: Our digestive system becomes very low on the bodies priority scale and slows right down leading to stomach problems like bloating, indigestion, diarrhoea, vomiting etc.
  • Metabolism: Hormonal changes affect both our appetites and the way we burn calories, upset metabolisms lead to other problems such as obesity.
  • Nerves: Our nerve system becomes oversensitive and this leads to increased awareness of pain.
As you can see we are putting our bodies under tremendous stress every time we have an anxiety or panic attack, with a severe attack doing untold damage over the long term.
Imagine you have particularly nasty infection which you need your immune system to get to work on immediately to fight off the foreign invaders which have entered your body but because you are in a constant anxious state then your immune system is almost closed down and will definitely lose the battle and leave you with a possibly life threatening infection needing immediate medical intervention.
Perhaps like me you would like your heart to continue working well into old age, are we helping it achieve that outcome by continually stressing it unnaturally?
So now we have a strong case for overcoming our anxiety or panic disorder, not only will we feel much better mentally but we will also be giving our physical bodies the best possible chance of operating at optimal rate for a long time to come.

Attacking Anxiety and Depression With Power Breathing Techniques

By Nathan Kay
Are you interested in attacking anxiety and depression? Well keep reading because I am about to give you some powerful methods for attacking anxiety and depression.
Attacking anxiety and depression is quite easy once you know how to do it. The methods I am going to teach you are all natural and make use of deep breathing techniques. There are many benefits to practicing deep breathing such as.
· Reducing blood pressure
· Sleeping better
· Improving productivity
· Reducing anger
· Strengthening your immune system
And the best thing is that it can be done in less than 5-10 minutes a day. There are two kinds of breathing that you can use for attacking anxiety and depression. They are abdominal breathing and anti panic breathing. Most people do not breathe properly instead of inhaling fully they breathe only into their upper chest which can lead to stress and hyperventilation. This kind of shallow breathing is unnatural if you've ever watched a baby breath you will know what I am talking about.
To perform abdominal breathing follow these steps
· Lie on your back
· Bend your knees slightly so that your back is flat
· Place one hand on your stomach
· Place one hand on your chest
· Breath so that that your abdomen rises and falls more that your chest
To perform anti panic breathing follow these steps
· Inhale deeply through your nose
· Hold your breath and count to ten
· Slowly breathe out through your mouth while making a slight hiding noise
· Repeat this cycle four or five times until you have calmed down

5 Myths That Can Make Your Depression Worse

By: Chris Green

A speedy recovery from anxiety and depression is often hampered by a number of harmful myths believed by sufferers and practitioners alike. In believing these myths, anxiety and depression are prolonged so it's absolutely vital you are aware of the following myths so you select the correct treatment and get better quickly.

You may hear fitness gurus promoting exercise as the best way to ease anxiety and depression. Although exercise is great for physical health, it cannot cure anxiety or depression. Lack of exercise has absolutely nothing to do with depression and exercising regularly will not cure you. Indeed, certain exercises - running, treadmills, biking to give just 3 examples - may even fuel depression as they allow you to brood over your problems. Exercises where you have to concentrate, such as tennis, badminton, squash, are more beneficial. Exercise can help, but you also need to treat the root cause of anxiety and depression as well. And if you perform the behaviours that cause anxiety and depression when you stop exercising, exercise won't help you conquer either of these problems.

Another common myth regarding anxiety and depression is the theory that both have their roots in past events, even going back as far as childhood. Repeatedly going over events from the past is a major part of depression, and of course, the past can be a very cruel place to live. But replaying past events is again just one of the symptoms. Therapy that solely focuses on addressing events from the past in a misguided search to attribute the cause of your depression is flawed in two ways: First, one single event from the past will not cause depression or anxiety. Yes, certain events from the past - especially abuse - can cause problems but these problems are not part of anxiety or depression and need specialist counselling. Secondly, replaying events from the past will do nothing whatsoever to help you deal with the problems and circumstances you face here and now. Instead of concentrating on the past, concentrate instead on coping with and solving, the problems and issues you are confronted with at the moment. This will help you far more than digging up the past.

Anxiety and depression are all in the mind. This is another huge myth, mainly believed by people who have never suffered from these problems. There are many other symptoms that are part of anxiety and depression: back ache, muscle cramps, exhaustion, loss of appetite or increase in appetite, sleeplessness, hyper-tension, and loss of sex drive to name but a few. Dismissing anxiety and depression as being "all in the mind" simplifies them and shows a complete lack of understanding about them. All of these symptoms combined make it so very hard for sufferers to do even the simplest of daily tasks and cause so much anguish. If anyone tells you it's "all in your mind" ignore them, they don't know what they're talking about.

For lots of people, an episode of anxiety and depression is often triggered by a traumatic event. For example, a death of a loved one, job loss, a relationship breakdown, these kinds of events. The conclusion is that traumatic events cause severe stress, leading to depression and anxiety. This is completely untrue because no event, no matter how traumatic, can ever cause anxiety or depression. This is easily demonstrated because every one of us will have to deal with traumatic events during our lives. But not every one of us will become anxious or depressed during these times. The reason why this is so lies in the way people are able to make sense of these events. The events themselves cannot cause anxiety or depression.

For people who don't suffer from depressive illnesses, they will more than likely believe that "depression is just a bad dose of the blues. You just have to snap out of it". Of course, every one of us feels the blues at some point in our lives. We may miss out on a promotion, we break up with a boyfriend or girlfriend, a good friend lets us down or we feel down because things aren't going our way. Eventually, these feelings pass and we feel happy again. Depression is totally different, much more complicated than feeling the blues and it certainly isn't something you can just snap out of. If someone says this to you, ignore them, they have no idea what you're going through and don't let them get to you.

Ensure you put your knowledge into action by avoiding the above myths and choosing effective treatments for anxiety and depression.

Physical Symptoms of Depression

By Alex Mayor

Feeling sad is something we will all experience once in a while in our lives. However some people feel sad on a daily base. They are not able to cope with their lives and will eventually become depressed. Sadness and hopelessness are two feelings associated with depression. But next to emotional symptoms depression also has physical symptoms.

Giving someone a diagnosis of depression is not as simple as it sounds. The D.S.M. IV states some clear guidelines but in reality everything is different than written in books. The contradiction to this matter is that some people say they feel depressed but they do not qualify for a depression diagnosis. Other people do not think they are depressed and just feel sad, but these people sometimes qualify for a diagnosis of depression. Therefore it is extremely important to not only look at the emotional symptoms, but also on the physical symptoms of depression.

The most important physical symptoms are a changing eating and sleeping pattern. When you are depressed you could have problems falling a sleep, or having problems staying awake. With eating this is the same; you could eat to little and do not feel hungry or you could eat much more than normal.

Next to these fatigue is also a very important sign. When you are depressed you do not have the energy to do anything. First it is because you do not feel like it but soon enough you actually do not have the energy to accomplish anything.

Pain is another sensation that is frequently seen. Chronic headaches is one of the symptoms highly associated with depression, another one is general body pain. Everything in your body hurts and there is not a physical reason for it. That is why many doctors will refer these patients to a psychologist and see if there is a mental illness causing these symptoms.

This article gave a short introduction to the complexity of manic depressive disorder. If you are interested in this subject than you can read more about the physical symptoms depression at my website about (manic) depression.

Depression Problem What You Can Do With It

By: Mr. Parveen

Well we talk about depression I hear some of you think that people who are sick but always thinking negatively. If we would have a little more understanding attitude towards people who suffer from depression, there should already suffering ago. But unknown is unloved, I would like some more information on the disease to depression. And a few tips here and there to give them, sometimes small things give big effects. Anyone who wants to add again I am very grateful for, because ultimately it is our opinion that counts.

Creation of a depression or depression symptoms:
One of the possible dates of the creation of a depression is when a lot of setbacks in succession to process so much that you will not even have time to process. This provides you a moment to yourself is to say, everything I've only succeed against adversity, and then it could be that you're now a downward spiral. Any person who in a downward spiral has ended it will agree with me that you do every little problem is that there is one too many. At that moment you come into a circle of negative thinking to sit, the only reason you see any problem so big because so many for a long time after each other.

Here are a few tips to ease a little. At a time when you have difficulty, just trying to get in touch with people who understand you and where you can vent your heart. But that story you know so that they not only that the problem of eye vision. But the whole picture, it is because you people are talking about the problem of the moment that the whole situation and know that they misunderstood or do you off as a complainant. It is not that one problem that makes you send over, but it is yet another in the row. Try to give your head peace through regular sleep, as you sit in a difficult period you get more sleep or rest.

People always full of ignorance approach, let them know you do not need to be condemned and that you would appreciate something that would show more understanding. A thing you know where that is a problem I must solve set it aside for a moment that you should have more, if not really of course urgent. Not too many people try to do your story, for it can also sometimes see as a problem person. Try especially to nature as possible, but do it as a regular ritual, you often come back relaxed. I would also say let us just listen to each other; it does not mean that you are not income you can not understand you have. For each thing you do is a small thing but a great gesture of understanding for a person with depression. Try things to feel how the other feels it, not how about you.

Three Effective Ways To Reduce Stress And Depressed Mood During The Holidays

By: Mark Lakewood, CEO

The holiday season is quickly approaching and many of us are preparing for this joyous time of the year. Some may embrace the holidays with cheer, hope, and thanksgiving while others may embrace the season with burden, anxiety, and personal failure. This article addresses three ways you can overcome anxiety and depressed mood during the holidays.

The first and most effective way to avoid anxiety and depressed mood is to recognize unachievable and unrealistic expectations (unhealthy thoughts) that you may subscribe to. Our thoughts have a direct bearing over our emotional disposition and the consequences that occur in the aftermath. We often cannot change circumstances (situations, events, and the behavior of others) that occur in our lives but we do have the power to alter the way we feel and react to them by simply changing the way we think. If we would like to avoid experiencing anxiety and depressed mood during the holidays, we must take ownership and control over our own thoughts by identifying unhealthy thoughts that we may subscribe to that might be contributing to a negative emotional disposition and replace them with healthier ones.

Some may fear social rejection and judgment from others. Though others may choose to judge negatively, pondering on this thought can ultimately rob you of experiencing joy and happiness. The following are six common unachievable and unrealistic expectations (unhealthy thoughts) that are often pondered on during the holidays:

1. "I need to spend a lot of money on gifts otherwise I might be perceived negatively by others" - It is a shame that so much worry is attributed from the issue of money especially during the holidays. We should not feel or be made to feel that the holidays are all about external/physical gifts. The most precious gift that we can give to one another is our fellowship and love (internal gifts). No external/physical gift can replace this. Internal gifts have a longer shelf life and increase our self-esteem more than external/physical gifts. We must keep this issue in the proper perspective otherwise we can inadvertently teach others that external/physical gifts are more precious and desirable than our fellowship and love.

2. "For gatherings, my home must always be clean and tidy otherwise I might be perceived negatively by others" - It is never okay to invite guests to a filthy home. But expecting your home to be constantly tidy might be an unrealistic expectation, especially when children are present. Expecting such would only cause you anxiety and depressed mood. Do not worry about the cleanliness of your home but rather focus on fellowship as this is much more important and significant.

3. "I must prepare a flawless meal for my gathering otherwise I might be perceived negatively by others" - The quality of meals should not be the main focus of the holidays. If food preparation is an issue, there is nothing wrong with purchasing meals from a restaurant. To go one step further, having a potluck might be a better and less expensive idea as your guests would be directly involved with the food preparation by offering a variety of foods at your gathering freeing up time for fellowship.

4. "My physical appearance must be acceptable and appropriate otherwise I might be perceived negatively by others" - Aside from daily hygiene, do not worry about your physical appearance. The fellowship that you can give to one another is much more important than your physical appearance. More times than not, our own anxiety over our physical appearance has more to do with how we feel about ourselves rather than how others may perceive us.

5. "I need to bring a mate to the gathering otherwise I might be perceived negatively by others" - If you are single, sometimes attending a gathering by yourself where couples are present might make you feel uncomfortable as you might feel that you do not fit in. Keep in mind that you are not alone as there are many people that are divorced, separated, or single. If having a mate was a prerequisite for gatherings, I guarantee you that there would be a lot less gatherings! In addition, avoiding gatherings would only rob you of the experience of possibly meeting a potential mate.

6. "I need to pretend that I am happy during gatherings otherwise I might be perceived negatively by others" - Experiencing happiness is not a prerequisite for attending gatherings. Oftentimes, life events and experiences that have nothing to do with the holidays may play a direct role in your emotional disposition. The wonderful thing about gatherings is that there are plenty of people that you can talk with. If someone asks you how you are doing or feeling, be honest with them and let them know. Do not tell them that everything is fine when it is not. Oftentimes, having someone to discuss your problems with might actually help you resolve them as well as make you feel better. Take advantage of this opportunity.

If there are any other unhealthy thoughts that you might be dealing with that are not discussed in this article, I encourage you to write those thoughts down on a piece of paper writing a healthier thought (one that you would like to subscribe to) next to it. It would also be a good idea for you to review these thoughts daily so that it becomes easier to recognize and replace unhealthy thoughts.

The second way to avoid anxiety and depressed mood is to establish personal and professional goals for yourself. There is a lot to be said for New Year's resolutions. Establishing short and long-term goals is a healthy idea because they can provide you with structure by giving you something to look forward to. Goals oftentimes give meaning to our lives. Those who do not have goals often feel hopeless and helpless. Just make sure that the goals that you establish are significant and achievable otherwise they will not be effective or worth your while to achieve.

And finally, the third way to avoid anxiety and depressed mood is to work at giving to others. Sometimes we are fooled into believing that happiness is achieved through the gifts that we receive or the items that we purchase. Just the opposite is true. You can achieve true happiness by helping others in need, volunteering your services, holding the hand of one in despair, or just simply being there when one experiences a low moment in his/her life. Oftentimes, it is not the words that we say that lifts one's spirit or gives one hope. But rather, it is just being there that makes all the difference in the world. At times, we feel uncomfortable because we do not know the right words to say to those who are hurting. Words are not always important. The fellowship and the love that you can provide is what the holidays are all about. Let's not lose this perspective and let's not give unhealthy thoughts, with all the anxiety and depressed mood that goes along with them, the ability to rob us from experiencing the joy and the happiness that we all deserve to experience during the holidays. Happy holidays to all!

How to Eliminate Your Acne and HAVE FUN at the Same Time!

by: Kenny Goh Jern Yue
Have you ever wondered why we have acne and even more on how we can get rid of acne? Like a lousy tenant, acne doesn’t pay you rent, nor contribute anything beneficial to your life. It does however do the opposite by destroying your skin and worst of all, your self esteem and social life!

Well, before embarking on this simple method to destroy your acne for good, we need to know thy enemy. There are two major causes of acne and the rest are just secondary. Before we can tackle them, we need to understand what they are and how they affect us.

Firstly, acne is caused by imbalanced hormone production. When you were a teenager, your body began to produce a hormone known as androgens, which activates and stimulates the oil glands in your skin, thus increasing oil and sebum production.

Logically, with the limited size of each pore and the constant influx of sebum, your pores get clogged and you may notice the presence of blackheads and pimples. As that spreads across the skin, it becomes known as acne vulgaris.

Stress in this case acts more like a catalyst rather than a cause. But do not underestimate the damages of stress. It can potentially worsen the acne a person has.

Our secret weapon in eliminating acne lies in the sea water. The sea water is formed with a balance of the salts in minerals such as sodium, magnesium, potassium, calcium chloride and bromides. These forms of minerals are vital in their respective ways for acne treatment.

Magnesium reduces stress and water retention, hampering aging and soothes the nervous system. Calcium prevents water retention while increasing circulation.
Potassium balances skin moisture level and replenishes minerals lost in vigorous activities. Bromides ease muscle stiffness and tensions, thus eliminating stress, which is a major contributing factor to acne. Finally, sodium is a booster for immune system function. All these act as a natural defense for your body against any acne breakouts.

So how can we apply the power of sea water and exercise to your acne condition, the answer is simple. Just head down to the nearest beach and have a swim! The only thing you need to be careful of is sunburn. Therefore, only go on early mornings: 9am-11am or evenings at 5:30pm to 6:30pm.

You may begin to notice the effects of this treatment after your FIRST SWIM! And you will be amazed on how smooth your skin has become. The more vigorous your swim and the more you sweat, the more your skin will be cleansed. This is a double action cleansing as your sweat pushes the impurities off your skin, which by the way is no longer clogged after the sea water washes away the debris! Additionally, the minerals in the seawater penetrate the pores to do some deep skin cleansing, all while you’re having fun swimming!

Stop Anxiety From Taking Over Your Life

By Cal Gladyng
Anxiety is just one of those things that everyone tends to experience at some point or another in life. Some people have to deal with it more than others. You would think that the more someone has to deal with it, the better they would be at overcoming anxiety. This is not always the case. Most of the time, anxiety causes a person's life to spin out of control. Some individuals lose their jobs, begin to become antisocial, and also become depressed once they become overwhelmed with anxiety.
Overcoming anxiety is the only way to get on with your life if it has become a problem. Some anxiety is normal. It is when it becomes excessive that it starts to become a problem. Luckily, there is an anxiety cure. However, there is no one certain anxiety cure. There are a variety of different things you can do to help you get over your anxiety and on with your life.
One of the things that will help you to ease your symptoms is to get some rest. All too often, people become anxious and depressed because they are not taking care of themselves properly. It is best to get at least eight hours of restful sleep every single night. If you must, set a time to go to bed and get up in the morning. Exercise is another way to get your body back into a normal rhythm. Exercising can also help those who seem to never be able to rest actually go to sleep. Working out on a daily basis helps the brain to produce chemicals that naturally help ease feelings of anxiety as well as provide a mental lift.
Another thing you can do when it comes to overcoming anxiety is to avoid most sources of caffeine. If you are a heavy coffee drinker, try switching to decaffeinated coffee instead. Stay away from diet pills that contain stimulants. You will also need to quit smoking if you are a smoker since cigarettes are considered to be a stimulant. Another good way to get rid of anxiety is to watch your diet. Eating too many greasy foods can lead to weight gain, which is another source of stress on your body. Anything that leads to more stress is just going to heighten your feelings of anxiety.
Overcoming anxiety can also be achieved by providing yourself with a little bit of daily relaxation time. Allow yourself at least 30 minutes everyday of quite time. Some people like to refer to it as "me time". Everyone needs this so they can keep going. Just like sleep, we all need a little bit of daily relaxation.
When you life a healthy life and take care of yourself, everything else will fall right into place. Eating the right amount of the right kinds of food, getting enough rest, exercising daily, and allowing yourself some daily relaxation time will greatly decrease the amount of anxiety you experience far more than you may think. It is important to know that there will always be some form of stress at hand, that is just life in general. But by overcoming anxiety associated with it, you will be able to live a much fuller and happier life.
You can Stop Panic Attacks without difficulty and with no wasting of your time and money on medicines. Natural techniques are the best way to overcome your Panic attacks and anxiety problems. In my blog I talk about overcoming anxiety and how you can two.

Caregivers helping with finances urged to switch to direct deposit

(ARA) - Half of American caregivers make health-related decisions for a loved one, and a new government survey finds an equal number are now helping to manage the finances of a parent, friend or other person needing their care -- adding to caregivers' levels of stress and anxiety.

Yet, surprisingly, only 52 percent of caregivers receiving Social Security payments on behalf of the person they care for say they use direct deposit, a decades-old time-saving tool that is safer and more reliable than paper checks.

According to the nationwide survey, sponsored by the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Go Direct (R) campaign, one in four Americans define themselves as caregivers, with nearly eight in 10 caregivers providing two or more hours a week of voluntary help to a parent, friend or other loved one and four in 10 committing 10 or more hours a week of support.

Approximately 6.5 million caregivers are receiving Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits on behalf of the person they care for.

"We want caregivers to know that by taking the simple, but important step of switching to direct deposit -- and encouraging those they care for to do the same -- people can avoid problems associated with paper checks and count on getting their money on time each month," says David A. Lebryk, Acting Commissioner of the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Financial Management Service.

Importantly, direct deposit can also protect people from serious financial crimes like check theft and fraud. The last thing caregivers should have to worry about is a lost or stolen check, says Lebryk.

Treasury receives 1.4 million inquiries regarding problems with paper checks each year, and although paper checks make up just 20 percent of the total number of Social Security and SSI payments, they account for more than 90 percent of reported problems. Last year more than 480,000 Social Security checks were reported lost or stolen and had to be reissued.

Pushed to their limits

The impact of caregiving responsibilities is significant, the survey shows. Among caregivers:

* Sixty-five percent report increased levels of stress and anxiety as a result of their role.
* Forty-five percent are concerned about the financial costs of caring for their loved one.
* Sixty percent report having less time for themselves each day as a result of their role. In fact, the majority (63 percent) are looking to free up an extra hour or more each day.

Problems of paper checks

One in four caregivers say they have been unable to cash or deposit a check in a timely fashion because of issues like not being able to get to the bank during business hours, being too busy or being out of town. Nevertheless, one in five caregivers still make trips to the bank to cash or deposit a check on behalf of the person they care for.

How to switch

Americans can easily sign up for direct deposit of their Social Security or other federal benefits for free by calling Treasury's Go Direct campaign helpline at 1-800-333-1795, by visiting www.GoDirect.org, or talking to their local bank or credit union.

Federal benefit recipients without a bank account can choose to sign up for the Treasury-recommended Direct Express (R) Debit MasterCard (R) card by calling toll-free 1-877-212-9991, visiting www.USDirectExpress.com or talking to their local Social Security office.

The preceding information has been provided by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Financial Management Service. The Go Direct (R) campaign is sponsored by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Federal Reserve Banks. Ways to Overcome Depression - Your Options in Conquering Depression

By Carolyn Anderson
You may have heard about depression many times and indeed, depression is common and most often, people with this disorder do not seek treatment. If you are one of those suffering from depression, it is important to note that there are ways to overcome depression and you can actually seek treatment.
You have to understand that depression is more than just being down and sad. It can include symptoms like loss of interest in the things that you use to enjoy and may include difficulties of sleeping, loss of energy as well as weight loss. Not only that, it may also include thoughts of death or committing suicide, thus it is important for you to not wait for depression to destroy your life before seeking treatment.
Exercising your mind and body
Indeed, your thoughts, your emotions as well as your physical self will be drained with depression and finding ways to overcome depression as early as possible can be a wise move. You may start with some simple steps like having regular exercise to help you ease off the tension in your body. Meditation is also a good way to help you learn proper breathing and learning how to relax. It will also help you empty your mind and make you stay calmer.
Finding support groups
Finding support groups, from families, friends, to people suffering from the same disorder is also one of the good ways to overcome depression and manage its effects in your life. Talking about your disorder with people going through the same problem will also help you find new strength in dealing with the symptoms of depression.
Medical treatment
Medical treatment for depression often involves antidepressant medications, SSRIs and some anti-anxiety medications, although experts often recommend getting therapies together with medications and not just rely on drugs itself to successfully fight depression.
Psychotherapy and NLP
One of the most effective ways to overcome depression is through psychotherapy. In fact, psychotherapy is considered the most effective treatment for depression and other anxiety disorders and problems. Although there are many psychotherapy techniques used in treating depression, addiction and anxiety disorders, NLP or Neuro-Linguistic Programming is found to have quick results when it comes to overcoming depression. NLP also allows you to overcome depression without having to take drugs and of course, a much healthier way to combat this disorder.
Not only does NLP help you fight your depression but also helps you in improving your life from your career, to interpersonal relationships and in gaining more self-confidence and self-esteem. Aside from depression, it also helps you overcome other hard to break habits as well as fears and phobias.
Aside from NLP, hypnotherapy as well as cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT are also other effective techniques that are used in overcoming depression, anxiety disorders as well as treating phobias and fears.
Indeed, you can find ways to overcome depression and put an end to this disorder, for as long as you seek help and if you will allow yourself to be completely healed from this devastating disorder. You just have to take that first step to healing and that is seeking help.

Understanding Depression

by: Martin Myers

Everyone can agree on the fact that depression is a debilitating disease. What we can’t all seem to agree on however, is what this disease does to a person’s ability to think reason and perceive. The problem in coming to an agreement here lies in the many causes and physical reactions to depression.

Common cause of depression include biochemical factors, severs stress, a sense of hopelessness, lack of sunlight and illogical thinking. The biochemical factors and sunlight are physical and environmental conditions that can be corrected with prescribed drugs or light exposure. What however can a person do about stress and feelings of hopelessness, and are these conditions causes of depression or symptoms of depression. It is within the confines of the medical profession that conversations such as this have raged for years.

Some researchers believe that stress and feelings of overwhelming hopelessness are the causes of depression, while others believe they are symptoms of depression. Research conducted supports both conclusions. Further studies have supported lent even more support to the evidence that stress, changes in expectancies, and irrational or hopeless thoughts are a result of depression, not a cause.

But what effect does depression have on our ability to think and reason? Do all our thoughts become illogical and negative? Not all depressed persons experience the same changes in their thoughts, but do all depressed persons experience some change in the thought process? Questions such as these are hotly debated even now, with all the wealth of information available to scientists and doctors. The brain is such a complex machine, that understanding of the processes and the ability to relate certain processes to the application of the masses is slow to come.

In general the depressed person sees the cup as half empty, not half full. That’s not to say that some of the population, without any evidence of depression will still see the cup as half empty. Can you see the difficulty of the situation here? There are many symptoms of depression that exist even within the thoughts of people with no evidence of depression. How do scientists and doctors distinguish, for the purpose of setting clear guidelines? I don’t believe they can.

I believe our thought process is like a fingerprint. Everyone’s is different in some way. No two people will be the same in their thoughts, or in their ability to act on those thoughts. Treatments for illogical and depressed thoughts will always be a tailor-made situation.

4 Steps for You to Help Yourself During Chemotherapy

by: Dave Saunders
Chemotherapy is a word that causes dread in most who hear it. It is a time of stress as well as risk. If you, or someone you know, are facing chemotherapy, these four simple steps may help get through the process with better spirits and better results as well.

1. Tell your doctor if you get side effects from treatment

You can't expect the possibility of relief from side effects if you do not share them with your doctor. Be sure to communicate with your doctor. Some people keep a health journal during and after treatment to improve the information you have to present to your doctor if problems arise more gradually. Discuss what you might keep in a health journal that might improve the effectiveness of your treatment.

2. Ask your doctor before you take any other medicine

All drugs operate by manipulating some normal cell function. This includes the chemotherapy drugs as well. These manipulations may conflict with the intended effects of your chemotherapy treatment. Even herbals, or an over the counter pain reliever can lead to unintended consequences. Always inform your doctor before taking any other medications.

3. Take care of your health

There are many things you can do to support the natural ability of your body to restore, protect and defend itself from the effects of injury and disease. Seek to improve your diet, find ways to reduce other sources of stress in your life and be thankful for the hope and opportunity you have because of your treatment. These things can have a remarkable affect on your body and your feeling of good health.

4. Talk about your feelings

These are stressful times. Don't keep your feelings bottled up. People you know and love are probably feeling stress too. Help each other by being open about what you are going through. By being open with others, you can feel more in control of the stress and trepidation you're feeling, instead of those things being in control of you.

Self-help can never take the place of professional health care. Ask your doctor and nurse any questions you may have about chemotherapy. Also don't hesitate to tell them about any side effects you may have. They want and need to know.

Six Secrets to Stop Feeling Depressed During a Recession

By Kirsten Whittaker
The tight economic times aren't just hard on our wallets (and 401Ks) they bump up our stress level too. But you can stop feeling depressed with these 6 secret steps.
Job insecurity, financial pressures and constant uncertainty that on top of the hustle-bustle of our everyday lives all contribute to a steadily mounting stress level.
What's worse, if you ignore stress (prolonged, unexpected or unmanageable) this doesn't make it go away. In fact, the destructive consequences of long-term stress on the body and mind are all the worse if you don't do anything to manage it.
With regular reports of gloomy economic numbers, it's no surprise that the most recent Stress in America survey found that our financial worries are taking a physical and emotional toll on everyone, with working women bearing the brunt of the stress.
Nearly half of the nearly 1,800 adult respondents said their stress levels were up over a year ago. People reported fatigue, being irritable or angry, or lying awake at night because of stress.
Women are more likely to report these stress symptoms than men.
Veterans of the stress management world, clinical professor of medicine and psychiatry Dr. Paul J. Rosch, and research psychologist Deborah Rozman recommend these strategies to cope:
1. Volunteer - not the thing you'd expect to top a list like this, but Rozman insists it's a great strategy. "Volunteering actually opens you up to possibilities," she explains. The amazing thing is that there is no shortage of opportunities. Think about a church or local event, a food pantry or soup kitchen, driving elderly neighbors to appointments - All these are examples of ways to get your mind off you. What's more this will "reopen the heart," according to Rozman, "because the heart gets shut down when you worry."
2. Practice appreciation - by changing your outlook, focusing on what you still have, you can do yourself a world of good. Rozman explains. "If you still have a job, appreciate that." Look for the good in your life and take a moment to enjoy these things, whatever they might be. She contends that doing this will help to bring hope back to your heart.
3. Tweak traditional de-stress advice - do what works for you. You've heard about regular exercising, eating healthy, getting enough sleep and the relaxation techniques you might use to calm yourself. "You have to find out what works for you so that you will practice and adhere to it because it relieves tension and makes you feel better," Dr. Rosch points out. "Jogging, meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, yoga and listening to music are great for some but dull, boring and stressful when arbitrarily imposed on others."
4. Decrease the drama - that's around you as much as possible. Even if you can't be rid of it all, cut some out. For example, Rozman points out that those who are in fear of losing a job might tend to grumble more. This only adds to your stress and makes the environment around you miserable too. "Drama is when we amp up anger, anxiety or fear," Rozman continues. Rather than piling on to a stress filled discussion, try to change the subject or the tone.
5. Ration your news diet - and you'll notice the difference at once. The news, now always-on and intent on disaster is full of gloom and doom. Limit your viewing, Rozman suggests, deciding how much you can watch to stay informed without being overwhelmed.
6. Stop the comparisons - they're hard to avoid in times like these, but they are no help in the end. "Don't compare the present with the past," Rozman says. Give yourself time to mourn and heal after a setback. But then you must move on. Instead of thinking about what you've lost, think instead about what you can still do to reach your goals.
By using these suggestions to cope with the stress around you, shifting focus to the positive, you'll be able to put this troublesome feature of our modern world in its place.
While experts have found that stress can add years to a person, they also know that those who cope effectively have higher levels of good cholesterol.
Finding coping strategies that work for you and keeping a positive, upbeat attitude are the sure-fire ways to manage the stressful situations to come and to help you stop feeling depressed.

The Fuel Of Stress, Anxiety and Depression

by: Chris Green

In the 21st Century, it is predicted that stress and stress related illnesses such as depression and anxiety will become the biggest killers. Despite significant advances in housing, standards of living, quality of food, and medical science, the pressures all of us have to face in today’s world are as demanding as any pressures experienced by our predecessors.

Why are these illnesses on the rise? And why do some people become so ill through these illnesses, they can find it hard to function?

Well they sure don’t happen overnight! You don’t suddenly wake up one morning and feel stressed or depressed. It’s not like flicking on a light switch! And by the same rule, if you’re suffering, you can’t just wake up one morning, flick off the switch and say “Great, I’m better now.”

Many people who don’t suffer from these illnesses often say to sufferers:

“Come on, snap out of it.”

If only it was so easy! Should anyone say this to you, please forgive them as it’s just a lack of understanding. It’s very hard for people to understand how you’re feeling if they haven’t been there.

The fact that these illnesses don’t suddenly happen means we can draw some parallels with illnesses such as heart diseases, some cancers and strokes.

Because these illnesses don’t just suddenly happen either.

If we look at heart disease, it’s often the result of damaging behaviors practised over many years. Behaviors such as smoking, lack of exercise and a diet high in saturated fat. Strokes are a result of similar behaviors and cancers too, particularly heavy smoking and drinking as you know.

So how do stressful illnesses such as stress, depression and anxiety compare?

Stress is also the product of harmful mental habits and behaviors. These habits and behaviors are developed and practised over years – since childhood in most cases. These are the mental processes that enable us to make sense of our lives and the circumstances we’re faced with. When we reach adulthood, we perform them automatically because we’ve learned these behaviors by repetition.

Think of it like learning to drive a car. Initially, the skills required to control the vehicle needed conscious thought. It seemed really difficult didn’t it? But once we’ve performed them for sufficient periods, we drive on auto-pilot. We’ve mastered the required skills by repetition.

Here’s the key: if we eat healthy food, take regular exercise, cut out harmful behaviors such as smoking and drinking, we improve our health and drastically reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and strokes. We are repeating good habits, habits that will give our physical well being a huge boost.

It’s exactly the same for stress. What’s important to understand is that not everyone becomes stressed or depressed – even when tragic and traumatic circumstances happen to them. Just like people who lead a healthy lifestyle and avoid harmful habits and behaviors, people don’t become stressed or depressed because they have learned effective habits and behaviors that prevent stress from arising.

This is very good news if you suffer from these illnesses. Because just as we can learn habits and behaviors which cause us to become highly-stressed, depressed or anxious, we can learn the habits and behaviors which stop these terrible illnesses in their tracks. And the more often we make use of them, we’ll soon begin to perform them automatically and our mental health will benefit enormously.

No more feeling stressed out. No more feeling unable to cope. No more anxiety and no more depression. EVER.

I’m living proof of this. For 5 years, a series of traumatic events sent me spiralling into an anxiety-induced depression nightmare. I came out of it by learning the natural skills that starve these illnesses. The more I used them, the less anxious I became. They’re now as natural to me as driving a car, and I’ve completely eradicated anxiety and depression from my life.

You can do it too.
