How to Eliminate Stress by Increasing Productivity

By

Photo: eventmanagerblog.com

Self improvement is hard work, at least in the beginning, and may not be everybody's cup of tea. All improvements to your physical and emotional self lead to helping you increase your productivity. Take exercise and diet for example. It's really tough to get started but after just a few days you begin to feel better, lose weight or at least inches and associate that feeling of well being and accomplishment to your new lifestyle changes.
We are never finished with the job of improving ourselves. Everything is moving and changing at all times. Your body changes and renews itself on a minute to minute basis and we are not physically the same one day as we are the next.
The same goes for learning and improving ourselves mentally. Did you know that the number one cause of stress for most people is? Unfinished projects! Being able to boost Normal productivity levels to Dynamic Productivity levels will help you eliminate that nasty health busting stress that nags at you when you have unfinished business.
Take a moment to look at yourself and review your thoughts for today. How many of them can be related in some way to an unfinished task or project?
For example:
• "Oh, I was supposed to have this done by 11 and it's already 3."
• "Thanksgiving is in three days. I have twenty people coming for a sit down dinner and I haven't even started cleaning the house or planning the dinner."
• "Oh man, there's volume 7 of "Learn to Speak Conversational German in 7 Weeks" and I haven't even opened the first one!"
• "I need to create a budget."
• "I forgot to pay the bills last week"
I could go on but, you get the picture.
Assuming that unfinished tasks are the number one source of stress it would make sense to spend some time assessing your personal list of the unfinished business.
• Make a list of everything you have left undone.
• Prioritize that list with the biggest, most important in first place and work back from there.
• Write the most important task on a new sheet of paper and don't look at any of the rest of them until the first one is finished.
• Download the free tool, Focus Booster. (Google it and you will find a link for a free download.) Focus Booster is a little timer that sits on your desk top and uses a few tricks to keep you focused. Start the timer and don't work on anything else, get something to eat, go to the bathroom or answer the phone until the timer goes off. Focus only on the task at hand.
• When this task is complete, move on to #2 on your list.
You'll be amazed at how relieved, successful and self confident this can make you feel.
If you can just get it together to complete that first project on your list it's very possible that you will become addicted to the "good feeling" of self worth and personal productivity that completion of a project or task can give you.
Two years ago, I wrote a cookbook of recipes from the popular Mexican restaurant that I owned for 26 years. Finally, after two years of procrastination the book is finally on line and for sale! I used the list and timer technique to break out of the procrastination mind set and now I'm on a roll! You can be two!! Your Increased Productivity starts today!

Train Your Brain to Defuse Tension

By

Photo: meditation-nation.com/

Sometimes it comes over you like a sudden inner storm. At other times, it builds up incrementally until you feel like your brain might explode from the pressure. Or it might show up as a pain in your neck or tightness in your back. The experience is tension and we often blame it on what's going on around us at the moment. Whether it's work deadlines, relentless bills to be paid, an argument with your spouse, or the baby crying in the middle of the night when you're craving sleep-we point to what's happening around us at the moment we feel tense and say "that's to blame."
However, what if tension were an inside job? What if you could train yourself in a few simple steps to handle it-to master it and release it? It may not be as difficult as you think. There are three inner steps that can turn moments of tension into moments of self-mastery, peace, and resolution. If you can catch yourself in the moment of tension and apply these three steps, you can free yourself on the inside and turn around any situation for the better.
Step one is recognizing the thoughts, feelings, and beliefs that you're maintaining at the moment you feel tension.
Inner recognition is job one. Own your tension and recognize what you are doing that is making you feel that way. To do that, take a timeout the moment you feel tension rising up and taking you over. If you're in the heat of a challenge or argument, excuse yourself, and step out of the situation for a few minutes. If you're interacting with others, assure them that you'll be back in a moment after you've taken a moment to compose yourself.
By taking a break from the action, you've inserted a mental pause in what is happening. You've stopped the situation from escalating and interrupted any reactive patterns that have been triggered. Taking a break gives you an opportunity to step back and observe your own thoughts, feelings, and beliefs, so you can identify exactly where you're coming from and why it's making you feel tense.
A couple good questions to ask yourself in that moment are:
A. What am I thinking "should" happen right now?
B. What words are running through my head?
These questions will get at the thoughts and beliefs that are controlling your mind at that moment. For example, you might be thinking that something "should" be done a certain way or that someone "should" behave differently. The words running through your head may give you some clues.
Once you've identified what you're thinking and consciously linked it to your tension, you might ask yourself a third question:
C. How does this feel in my body right now?
See if you can locate and describe the emotion and/or physical sensation in your body. Once you've done that, take a few slow deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth to blow off that steam. You can even imagine that you're breathing in and out of the any area of your body that feels tense. That might sound funny, but it can really help.
Now, you're ready for step two: realize that there are points of view other than the one you were holding at that moment.
What you were thinking, feeling, and believing was just one way of looking at things-amongst many. You may feel justified in what you were thinking. It may even hold a key to resolving the situation. However, it will be helpful to you and everyone else involved if you realize that yours is just one point of view-and that there may be other equally valid points of view.
Now you're ready for step three: re-engage the situation seeking a new perspective.
Return to where you were and who you were with and see if it's possible to have a fresh start. A good place to begin is to ask to hear other's points of view. Acknowledge that you lost your cool and ask to hear the other person's perspective. As you listen, make eye contact, nod in acknowledgement of what they say, and repeat back to them what you've heard. When you've truly heard someone else, it widens your perspective and opens them to listening to you in return.
Then, it's your turn to express your perspective (which may have changed) in relation to what they have said. Express what you have to say without blaming. Be as factual and specific as possible and reference how what happened affected you.
You can then move forward to discuss alternatives. Freed from the tension of that preceding heated moment, all parties will probably be more open to come to a mutually agreeable solution.
If your tension arose from circumstances and not from an interaction with someone else, see if you can engage those events from a new perspective. See if you can allow the current conditions to speak to you and show you a solution. Engage what is happening with fresh eyes and pay attention to details you may have previously missed.
Practicing these three steps is a recipe for defusing tension and creating positive solutions:
1. Stop what you're doing, take a break, and recognize where you're coming from at the moment.
2. Realize that yours is just one point of view amongst many possibilities.
3. Re-engage the situation looking to understand other points of view and discover solutions.
The more you practice these three steps, the quicker you'll be able to defuse tension and move forward peacefully and productively. It all starts by pausing and recognizing where you're coming from and then learning to work well with yourself on the inside. How To Reduce Stress In Your Everyday Life

By: Tanja Bogdanoska

Photo: cdn.mymajicdc.com

Stress can have negative impact on your professional and personal life. If you want to fight against it, you should participate in activities that will reduce the stress and make your daily life more enjoyable. Ive made a list of a few stress relieving activities that you can incorporate easily in your daily routine. Take a look.

Breathing technique

If you are feeling stressed and you don't have the time or a place to calm down, you can try the breathing technique. This technique is designed to put your breathing under control, so your body and mind can relax. While performing this technique, you'll refocus your attention from the negative emotions to the activity of breathing.

Ill give an example of a good breathing exercise that is simple and easy to do. Close your mouth and slowly inhale air through your nose for about 5-6 seconds. Hold your breath for 2-3 seconds and exhale the air slowly through your mouth. You must have a full concentration while doing this breathing exercise.

Try listening to music

Its a well-known fact that listening to music can calm down and clear the mind. Its because the music beat and the lyrics change your state of mind. When you listen to your favorite music, you tend to forget about your surroundings. Your mind is focused on the sound. Its like youve entered a totally different world.

So, try to incorporate the music into your daily routine as much as possible. When you are preparing for the beginning of the day, try to set a positive frame in your mind. Instead of watching the news which are full with negative stories, put on your favorite music. Sing out with the song, dance and let your energy flow. Also, before bed time, try to listen to some nature sounds such as water running or birds singing.

Play video games

When you are feeling frustrated and anxious, you sure want an escape from the real world. You want to get away from the worries and responsibilities for some period of time. Playing RPG games (role-playing games) gives you the escape that you need, according to the experts. These games offer you the possibility to be in the shoes of a solder, a sniper in a warzone or a special agent who is searching for the killers. The action of shooting zombies in their heads or blowing guys away gives you satisfaction and the feeling of excitement. This feeling of satisfaction is exactly what you need to chase away the stress of the fast-living life. So, what are you waiting for? Find some good role-playing game and chase the stress away.

Remember, you cannot escape from the stress in your everyday life. But you can fight against it by using some of the activities which I mentioned. Its up to you whether or not you are going to fight.

Occupational Stress

 By: Carole Fawcett

Statistics tell us that more people have migraine headaches on Sunday night and that the rate of heart attacks and heart attack-like symptoms are very high in the early hours of Mondays.. What does this tell us? Perhaps that people are dreading going to their job on Monday? Maybe. But there are other reasons for this as well. Two decades ago we saw changes happen in the workplace that we didn’t anticipate. The trendy term used was downsizing. Less people to do the same amount of work. Executives lost their jobs daily. New types of employment finding agencies sprung up that specialized in higher level management job finding. There was confusion in the workplace and people began to feel uncertain about their jobs. Articles started to appear that indicated we will all have more than one job in our lifetime – there would be no more job security – even for those who were University educated.
Stress in the workplace has increased over the past couple of decades. Occupational Stress can be one of the most debilitating types of stress there is. Overworked Managers no longer have the time to acknowledge their employees in positive ways. Disrespect and rudeness are two of the big attitudinal problems in some businesses. There is a loss of connectedness with the workers. People feel isolated and unsupported in their work. Add to this the addition of the part time marginalized worker. Must be on call at the whim of the employer, only allowed to turn down so many shifts, no benefits and frequently lower wages. This means that these people do not know how much money they will have coming in each month – they try to take on another part time job – but the same thing holds true. Must be on call, only allowed to turn down so many shifts, etc.. You see the problem. It’s an insecure way to live at best. This creates the stress of never being able to plan for anything. An acquaintance tells me she keeps her cell phone at arms reach when she is in the shower.
According to the Tenth Annual Attitudes in the American Workplace Poll done by Harris Interactive, workplace stress is definitely up. Some of their results would support this. 63% say that the job pressures interfere with their family or personal life and 60% say that the job is negatively affecting their physical and emotional well-being. Stress Management is a big problem: 52% say that they think that people in their workplaces need help in managing anger and stress, yet 55% say their company offers no training on how to manage anger or stress. 35% say they feel their co-workers are harder to get along with due to stress.
Granted this poll was done in the United States, but the same results could be obtained here. So, what can we do to help combat the stress in our own office. We can acknowledge one another and leave anonymous notes that are positive in content. â€Å“Thank you for being you – you brighten my day”,

â€Å“You were really helpful – thanks!” Or we could introduce some silliness and put some fun items on our desk. I have an Eeyore stuffy that talks and he never fails to elicit smiles and laughter. When I’ve had a frustrating day, Eeyore and I have a talk. Join a laughter club ande release those endorphins, serotonins and boost your immune system at the same time. If a laughter club isn’t your thing, rent funny videos for home OR work. Create a joke book, or a humour box. Buy balloons and leave them anonymously on someone’s desk. Put up funny or positive motivational quotes.
Many companies use fun as a motivator and mood stabilizer for their employees. Westjet Airlines is known for this and I am told that their employees just love going to work. The company holds parties for their employees and show their appreciation in many ways. Companies who make it fun to go to work get more out of their employees than those who don̢۪t.
If we could learn to treat each other with respect and appreciation at work, mix in a little fun, smile and thank each other, it just might help to ease the stress of our workdays. It would be the beginning of something good.

How To Teach Your Children To Beat Stress

By: Art Turner

We are sending our children into a future filled with stress and conflict. Parents and teachers have the responsibility to model behaviors and teach skills that will enable our children to be productive, accepting, healthy, and above all, resilient.

1. Self-understanding and acceptance

Self-esteem is a realistic estimate of your own capabilities and worth. People with high self-esteem are productive, responsive, imaginative, and attentive to the needs of others. Encourage your children to develop their natural aptitudes and interests. Set them up for success. Empower them to be more responsible.

2. Adults' understanding and acceptance

Give your children regular, focused, undivided attention. This, more than anything else, communicates your unconditional love.

3. Constructive thinking

We are what we think. Fill your language with statements that help your children see change in a positive way, to view adversity as manageable, to persist until they are successful, and to become more oriented to the needs of others. Prepare your children for the reality that others may not think or believe like they do. Teach your children to identify positive and negative feelings in themselves and others. Replacing destructive thinking with constructive thinking increases self-esteem and improves coping skills.

4. Good decision-making strategies

Making a good decision requires the ability to generate alternative solutions to a problem, predict consequences, view the problem from the perspective of others, and consider how to implement alternatives to reach a solution. Children as young as four or five can usually generate alternatives and predict consequences, but advanced decision making skills come later. Model good decision making for your children. Show children how characters in stories make decisions. Let your children make their own decisions whenever possible.

5. Stress-coping strategies

It's not too early to teach children physical relaxation exercises like breathing techniques, some forms of meditation, imagery, and muscle relaxation exercises. Help your children learn to recognize their own stress triggers and responses, and identify which relaxation methods work best for them. And help your kids laugh--read funny stories, watch age-appropriate comedies, and laugh at their jokes.

6. Good nutrition and exercise

Good nutrition optimizes the way your mind and body works. A well-functioning mind and healthy body increase our self-esteem and resiliency. Make aerobic exercise and recreation a family affair. If your children see you exercise, they are more likely to take it up themselves and develop a lifelong positive habit.

7. A sense of purpose and commitment to personal and social goals

Commitment to goals gives meaning and value to life, and a reason for existence. Children should have more than one goal, and their goals should be realistic. Teach them to be flexible in how they achieve their goals, and help them learn persistence when progress is slow.

8. Social skills and social supports

Healthy relationships build self-esteem and protect from the negative effects of stress. Help your children to build self-awareness skills and to see situations from another's point of view. Teach them to positively manage conflict and disagreement.

Resilient children grow up to be adults who have a sense of control, a positive view of change, and an ability to find meaning and value in life. Now doesn't that describe the kind of people you want to have running the world when you retire?Art Turner is a writer, musician, and creator of Relaxation Emporium, where you can learn more about stress, stress management, and relaxation techniques. How to Relieve Stress

By: Trevor Dumbleton

One question that is not asked enough by people under stress is how to relieve stress. Unfortunately, people who are under stress tend to simply take it as a matter of course and simply accept its existence as though it was some sort of natural occurrence, or even a boon! Thus, people who are feeling the effects of stress do not actually take the time to notice that they are under stress and need relief. And when people are under stress, the first part of tackling the problem of how to relieve stress is actually realizing that there is stress that needs to be relieved.

Are you having trouble concentrating? Are you struggling with a project that doesn't seem to be going anywhere? Are you dealing with people who simply will not listen to sense? Are you frustrated with the way things are going? Congratulations, you have stress. Okay, this is not really something to be congratulated on, but it is important to understand this fact. After all, the beginning of the "How to relieve stress" problem begins with recognizing the warning signs. Then, once the warning signs are seen, healing can begin.

The first thing to do when you want to know how to relieve stress is to learn how to walk away. That's right, get up, go someplace else, and just cool off. It is often vital to hit that reset button and take a few deep breaths away from the action. The work will still be there when you get back, but being there beyond your breaking point will not get it done. An overabundance of things to do will not be helped by a clouded mind, so give your mind a break. Then, once your head is clear again, you can head back and bang out the projects with the greatest of ease. Or at least more ease than when you were sitting in front of a pile of work and wondering how you would get through it all.

Okay, so you need a break, you have walked away, but you are still so stressed that you are ready to pop. Unfortunately, the previous lesson on how to relieve stress has not worked and you need something more powerful. Well, you need to pull out a better method. This means that you need to simply concentrate on nothing.

When stress is way too much for a simple period of walking away, you need to practice an exercise in meditation. This means sitting down, closing your eyes, and thinking about absolutely nothing. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to think about nothing, so you should think about your breathing. Take a deep breath in and feel the air moving through your nostrils, down your windpipe, and into your lungs. Then push that breath out and feel it moving all the way up from your diaphragm, up into your lungs through your windpipe and out of your nostrils. Feel every motion of the air and notice how it feels as it exits. Imagine your tension flowing out with the air, evaporating into the endless space of the atmosphere, diluting into a complete dilution of oxygen. Think about nothing but breathing and notice every moment of the experience. Then, after about 3 or 4 breaths -- or as many as it takes -- open your eyes. You should feel as refreshed as though you just took a quick, refreshing nap. If you don't repeat the exercise until your mind is clear and you are able to concentrate on your work again.

These activities are very effective for a short period of time, but you will also need a method for relieving stress in the long run. After all, it is taxing to notice that you are under stress and it takes a great deal of will to make that leap and push away all those feelings. Thus, you need a way to relieve stress in the long term.

In the long term, the best method to choose, when you want to know how to relieve stress, is to do what you always say you are going to do: eat right, exercise, and get enough sleep at night. Yes, we all say that we will do it, but none of us every actually follow through. But, if you eat right, you will feel better during the day, if you exercise, you will feel better during the day and sleep better at night, and if you sleep enough, you will actually clear away all that fogginess that can lead to stress. So do your body and your mind a favor by taking care of those little things that you keep telling yourself you will do tomorrow. After all, today was yesterday's tomorrow.

When you want to know how to relieve stress, you should begin with a few simple methods as you slowly build up your will power to tackle the larger work of exercising, eating right, and getting the sleep you need. By doing all of these things, your mind will be cleared up, you will feel better during the day, you will sleep better at night, and you will not have to worry about stress nearly as much. After all, once you are relieving stress routinely, you won't have to worry about how to relieve stress.

Stopping Stress

By: Steve Gillman
How To Defend Yourself

Do you ever find yourself feeling overwhelmed? Do you sometimes feel like you just have too much to think about? Does it make you tired, irritable, or even depressed? What can you do about it?

People rarely go to the doctor to say "I think I have stress," and yet the National Institutes of Health say that 80% of illnesses are caused by stress, directly or indirectly. Hormones, such as adrenalin, are released into your blood when you're stressed. This causes a rise in blood pressure, a faster heart and breathing rate, and faster conversion of glycogen into glucose. These are good things if you need to escape a charging grizzly bear, but when these effects are prolonged, the immune system is depressed, and your body suffers other negative changes.

Common effects of prolonged stress include fatigue, pain in the muscles and joints, headache, mental confusion, depression, anxiety, and irritability. Stress reactions cause your body to use too much energy, which can result in physical and mental weakness.

Managing Stress With Meditation

Years ago at Stanford University, an analysis of 146 meditation studies was done. The conclusion was that meditation not only was beneficial at the time of practice, but that it significantly reduced anxiety as a character trait. The studies focused on transcendental meditation, but it's probable most methods have similar results. (Reported in the Journal of Clinical Psychology 45: 957974, 1989.)

The bottom line is that stress is a killer, and that meditation really can help you defend yourself. Traditional meditation may have the most beneficial effects, but maybe you're short on time, or uncertain about learning to meditate. In that case, there are two simple techniques you can learn in a few minutes, and start using today.

The first is a breathing meditation. Close your eyes, let the tension drain from your muscles, let go of your thoughts (to the extent possible), and breath deeply through your nose, paying attention to your breath. As thoughts or sensations arise, just acknowledge them and return your attention to your breath as it goes in and out. Do this for five or ten minutes.

To use the second technique, stop whatever you're doing when you feel stressed, and take three deep breaths. Watch yourself until you identify what is bothering you. Are you worried about something? Is there a letter you need to write? Maybe your neck is sore. Note everything you find.

Now deal with these stressors. Write the letter that's on your mind, take an aspirin, put things on tomorrow's list. If the best you can do is recognise there's nothing you can do right now - then do that. With practice, you'll get better at finding what's just below the surface of consciousness, irritating you. After you address these things, close your eyes, take three deep breaths, and you'll feel more relaxed and able to think clearly. Try it now.

Reducing Job Search Stress

By: Scott Brown

Stress Busters: Making The Most of Your Job Search

Life brings us plenty of stress everyday. Don't let the loss of a job increase your stress levels. Whether you're out of work, or on a hunt for a better career, there are ways to reduce the amount of unnecessary stress in the process. When you're ready to look for that new job, make the most of your time and energy by coming up with a plan to keep you focused on your goals.

Be Patient

Job searching is a process and it takes time like everything else. It's easy to get frustrated when we don't get results right away, but stay focused. Remind yourself that it may take longer than you think and more importantly, you're worth it. Make realistic goals for yourself every week and reward yourself for achieving them. No matter how much time you're putting into it, you need to take a break. So when you achieve your weekly goal, take some time off to regroup then start again fresh.

You are not your career

There is more to you than your 9-5. If you let your job define you, you will end up feeling lost and empty when you don't have one. You are a valuable person and you don't need a career to validate you. It can be very difficult to separate yourself from your career, but it will prove positive if you can. Think of yourself as an already complete person who will be even happier with a satisfying career.

Of course there is nothing wrong with maintaining a great career that enhances your life. Nevertheless, it can't be the only thing that makes you you. If you get into a rut and you're feeling really down in the dumps, take some time off. Job Searching is a full-time job and like every other job, you will need a vacation now and then. Use your time to assess your situation. Figure out how to work smarter-not harder.

Take yourself seriously

Make smart decisions about ads and occupations that sound like a good match for you. It's never good to put all your eggs in one basket, but make sure you're using your time wisely. Think of your job search as research project. Set up goals, a plan of action, and a deadline in which you should be done with your project.

Have a place to report to everyday. It can get depressing sitting in your house day after day, especially if you're not getting your desired results right away. Find a quiet place like a library where you can use all of your materials and concentrate on your goals.

A Fun Relief For Stress

By: Rob Flores

Playing video games can truly have a help for those who have traumatic lives. The interaction of the pastime can take your care off troubles that may be helping you to cultivate an ulcer in your everyday life. With today's fast paced lifestyles, each person want the whole thing done right at the present. Giving yourself a pause from the strains that are made on a daily basis can have excellent settlements.

It's like you enter another world, when you play Wii,Playstation 3, or Xbox 360, which can be thirst-quenching and makes you forget all about the things that have perturbed you throughout the day. Stress that bothers you in real life seems to flee, when you are focusing on something else. It helps you to stop thinking about all about that demanding manager or making it at your house early enough to get dinner ready for the children. You have less time to dwell on the stressful situations when your care is alert on something else.

Relaxing the mind and body lets you put behind you about worry and stress, and distracting video games can make you forget about things that might be worrying or things you are looking for answers to. Concentrating on winning a video game lets you think of something else entirely and can help you get things off your mind which have you bothered.

Video games can let you have some management over your contribution in the game and as a result, give you a feeling of being in charge again. Every now and then, work has a way of making you feel like you have no control and that is part of what contributes to stress. If you win, a sense of completion can build your self-reliance and self esteem through role playing games and becoming the conqueror.

This is also beneficial for children. There are some children who do not seem to fit in with others very well. They may just be quiet or they are not popular. When they play wii, playstation 3, or xbox 360, they are in charge and the sense of dominance may help to heighten their self-assurance levels. This in turn may help with conditions they be drawn against in reality. It may help them to find acquaintances who have the same interests.

Video games can improve concentration because focusing on the game helps them win, which they can adapt to school work and other things they will encounter in on a daily basis life. Results that are achieved through wii, playstation 3, or xbox 360 video games can carry through to other parts of their lives.

The sense of carrying out that comes from winning the game is another benefit, whether you are a child or an adult. The more demanding each point of a game becomes, the more coolness that is generated. It is one of the beneficial improvements that can come from playing video games because feeling good about yourself helps you have the confidence to handle everyday evils.

The video games of today are not only mentally challenging, but they challenge the user to become more skilled. Often the progress made in games is measured by the ability level achieved. When this skill is not forthcoming, what do you do? You attempt until you get it right. This can show children and adults alike that the skill that is not instantly present can be accomplished with patience and perseverance.

Leaving behind troubles and stress are part of entering another world that video games provide. The recreation and leisure you experience for a while comes from entering another place, which gives you a much needed break from the everyday stress and tiredness. Video games can provide a welcome break and leave you feeling ready to conquer a new day.

Emotional Stress- a Look at Causes and Solutions

There are countless reasons people have emotional stress. Dealing with traumatic events and circumstances can cause a great strain. The good news is, you can live a more peaceful life if you know how to deal with symptoms and causes of stress.

What is causing your stress?

First, you need to clearly understand the source of your emotional stress. Some people know exactly why they are stressed other may have no idea. Sometimes there is a clear, marked event that serves as the catalyst while other times stress can be a result of a series of events built up over time.

If you're not sure why you feel emotionally stressed out, it's time to do some self-examination. What that could entail is a process where you really take the time to analyze certain events that have occurred in your life by tracing them back to their roots. Discovering important insights sometime requires sitting quietly and reflecting without distractions.

How is it affecting your life?

How emotional stress affects your life as well as those around you is an important factor worth discovering. People have different ways of coping with stress - some people keep everything bottled inside, while others lash out. Regardless of what your style is, holding on to stress or lashing out is having negative effects on your life. Recognizing the effects of emotional stress on your life can serve as a great motivator to help you seek recovery.

How can you heal?

The answer to how to heal from the effects of emotional stress is different for everyone. If you experienced a traumatic life event that has left you with emotional scarring, you may want to seek professional help. Working with a professional counselor can be very therapeutic and is an important step in the healing process. While it might be hard to admit professional help is needed, the emotional benefits associated with seeking counseling can be profound.

Other times, emotional stress is something you can tackle yourself by making necessary life changes and altering both your attitude and your lifestyle. One action you can take is to begin writing down a list of the stresses in your life. Separate the list into two columns. One column should contain things you have direct control over, and the other column should contain things you have no control over. This will help you to fix the things that you can and release those things from your mind that you can't change.

Making the decision to heal and to deal with your emotional stress is extremely important. Clearly, you can't continue living with enormous amounts of stress and lead a happy and productive life. Many people in all walks of life seek a professional for advice and help, so theres no shame in it. Actually it is taking this kind of action that will offer you the peace and freedom that you are desperately seeking.

Participate in helpful activities

Once you have decided on your path to healing it's important to build a lifestyle that will help support you in decreasing emotional stress. You might decide to incorporate the practice yoga or Pilates into your life. Other people find it helpful to get in the habit of regularly meditating. Still other people like to surround themselves with friends and family to help manage their emotional stress. Only you can know the life changes you need to make in order to deal with emotional stress. The important thing is to act now before it gets the better of you.

Information on Stress Exhaustion

Stress Exhaustion is a combination of physical and emotional exhaustion which is the result of prolonged high stress situations. Combined with lack of rest, stress exhaustion can be highly debilitating. People who suffer from stress exhaustion feel overwhelmed by the events around them. Many also experience feelings of frustration and helplessness. If not addressed, stress exhaustion can lead to additional health problems.

Depression is a state of mind which is characterized by a negative sense of inadequacy and a visual lack of activity. It is a mental state in which the effecting person experiences sad feelings of gloom and downturn in mood, which may be relatively transitory and may be due to something complex. The common behaviour includes feelings of sadness, despair, low self-esteem, low self-reproach and discouragement.

Stress applies to any condition that harm the body or the mind. In simple words, it is the condition that results when person-environment transactions lead the individual to perceive a discrepancy, whether real or not, between the demands of a situation and the resources of the person’s biological, psychological or social systems. Every one can get stress whether he is a student or a worker etc.
If you are stressed, you may also be more exposed to risk factors for diseases. For example, smokers may smoke more if they are stressed, and people who drink alcohol to relieve stress may become dependent on it. In the long term this will push up your risk of having a heart attack or stroke, and of developing certain cancers. Overall, if you are under long-term stress you are at greater risk of developing disease or dying prematurely.

They also found evidence suggesting that these stress-learning performance relationships were partially mediated by exhaustion and motivation to learn. Both forms of stress were positively related to exhaustion, and exhaustion was negatively related to learning performance. Hindrance stress was negatively related to motivation to learn, challenge stress was positively related to motivation to learn, and motivation to learn was positively related to learning performance. Implications with respect to theory and practice are discussed.

Sudden Severe Loss In this situation, the individual has experienced a sudden, perhaps surprising severe loss. This loss may be the death of a loved one, loss of a job, loss of friendship, or other grief process. In this type of depression, the patient can clearly identify what is creating the depressed mood.

High levels of stress affect the whole hormonal system, especially the thyroid and adrenal glands. Symptoms of adrenal exhaustion include fatigue, muscle weakness, low metabolism and difficulty resisting flus and colds. Other effects range from headaches and depression to increased environmental sensitivities.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an emotional illness that develops as a result of a terribly frightening, life-threatening, or otherwise highly unsafe experience. PTSD sufferers re-experience the traumatic event or events in some way, tend to avoid places, people, or other things that remind them of the event (avoidance), and are exquisitely sensitive to normal life experiences (hyperarousal).

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition that affects people who have gone through a major traumatic (shocking) event. PTSD is characterized by repeated thoughts about the ordeal, a dulling of emotions, an increased tendency to become excited and aroused, and, sometimes, dramatic personality changes.

Avoiding Stress

By Mateo Martins
In today's hectic and eventful world it can be very hard to not get stressed. With the amount of bills, sounds and new impulses coming at as every second it is a wonder that we can even function as well as we do. Stress can be very detrimental to your health if you allow it to and therefore it is a really good idea to quickly measure and control your stress levels. The worst thing you can literally do is to feel stressed and just try to ignore it and keep going, you might think that by ignoring it you are getting rid of it, but all this stress will compound over time and suddenly hit you like a brick wall.
Now that we have established how important it is to deal with stress as soon as possible, it is time to see what kind of methods you can use to lower your stress levels and consequently heighten the quality of your life. The first thing you want to do about your stress level is what is called taking preventive action. The preventive action is just a system that will help you stop the stress before it even occurs and is therefore a very proactive solution compared to some of the stress coping methods that are more immediate and in reaction to an already occurring problem.
A really easy way to greatly minimize the amounts of stress you feel is to organize your day. Every night before you go to sleep, make sure you create a to do list for the next day. Now you might think that this will further stress you, but what you are going to do is to put priorities on the different tasks. So assign either low, medium or high priority on the tasks on your list, where High priority levels are the tasks you absolutely have to complete, make sure you don't have more than 2-3 of these on any given day.
This simple exercise will let you have a 100% clear image of what is really important each day and in this way you will focus on each of the important tasks one at the time instead of trying to multi task. Multi tasking is the ultimate stress builder and should be avoided at all costs.
Start using this method from tonight and within a week you should see lowered stress levels and a more relaxed mental state.

Do Not Let Stress Kill You - Importance of Handling Them Effectively

By Greg Correll
Having a little stress in life will give you that extra push you need when it comes to getting things done. The problem with that is, how much stress do you really need? Not only excess stress can trigger anxiety, depression and affects your mental health negatively, it can also affect our physical health as well! This article will talk about the physiology of stress and why you should handle them effectively before they kill you.
On top of the negative mental health effects, here are some ways stress is killing our body:
Firstly, we experience the fight or flight mode, a change in the state and physio of our body that includes several different hormones and chemicals being released into our body such as adrenaline and endorphins. Heart rate will go up together with your blood pressure and blood flow can slow down for several part of our organs. This mechanism is in place to gives us the sudden burst of energy for survival, one that is necessary back in the past.
Once our perceived threat is over, the body will start to repair any tissue that was damaged during the stress stage, this is called stress resistance. Although not in the fight or flight mode anymore, our body is still somewhat on alert mode, normal function of the body will begin again.
The last physiological change to our body is stress exhaustion, this is where it can be potentially harmful to our body, especially the more we go through it. The immune system now will be suppressed, because of the overabundance of chemicals in our body, and thus causing our cardiovascular system to suffer.
This is also why stress is often linked to cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease, stroke or high blood pressure. The changes stress brings to our body can often leads to formation of stomach ulcers, falling sick regularly due to a weakened immune system, as well as a change in our eating habits.
Other notable ways it can affects our body are headaches and body aches, it can also alter your sleeping pattern altogether. On top of that, a drop in sexual desire and performance are also commonly reported and linked to stress.
The worst part about having excess stress in our life is that it often escalates our current health complication, especially complication that involves our nervous system. Escalation of chronic pain, bowel disorders and digestive problems are not uncommon when someone with the condition undergoes a stressful period.
Handling stress can indeed be a life saver, because there is no real way to avoid stress altogether, therefore one needs to learn how to disperse them effectively before it severely alters your health and your mental health!

Kids And Stress - How To Help

By: Andrew John

A certain level of stress is a normal thing that every child experiences during growing up. Stress in children can reach very high levels, but is usually short-term. However, as children are quickly changing, the sources of their problems appear and vanish very quickly. That's why parents should keep an eye on their children in case a few stressful situations happen at the same time. Then, parents need to react quickly and help their kids cope with stressful situations - otherwise they risk that child's condition will aggravate to the point when the doctor's assistance becomes necessary.

The best way to teach your kids how to manage stress is to manage your own stressful situations well. The best lesson about not getting stressed is showing your kids that you can overcome your problems and remain cheerful. Expressing anger, frustration and any other similar feelings will teach your child that such emotions are an acceptable behavior once stressed.

If you intend to help your children, remember that their problems are real, no matter how ridiculous they may seem to you. The fact they are stressed about it is reason enough to treat their problems seriously. You have to give a hand to your child if it seems to be very stressed about something regardless of your feelings towards the situation.

As the result, you have to learn how to talk to your children. The best way to learn that is talk about other things than just dinner and school. Discuss their feelings, their beliefs and hopes. This will give you better contact with your children - it is especially important in helping them cope with their stress. Usually, the real reason of their problems is relatively small, but well-hidden. You have to know how to discuss openly with your children if you hope to succeed.

Always tell the truth to your children, even if it hurts. Children are very perceptive, especially when it comes to noticing details. They will eventually find out what you tired to hide from them, so the truth will harm them anyway. However, in addition to that they will feel betrayed by their parents. And such feeling is one of the few that may cause true and long-term problems. So, if you wish your children to deeply hate you, tell you lies about their personal life and get involved in alcohol and drugs, just keep them telling sweet lies instead of harsh truth.

Do not try to solve the problems for your child. This will really do nothing. All you should do is provide advice, assistance and acceptation to your children decision-making process. Teach them what to do, but try not to interfere with their specific choices unless they are going to be disastrous like leaving high school or becoming a drug dealer.

How To Use A Journal To Reduce Your Stress

By: Daniel Lesser

Writing in your journal on a regular basis can actually help you prevent stress. You will learn to think out your problems in an organized way. You will learn how to express yourself and release emotions and anxieties. You learn how to manage your life more productively so you do not have such overwhelming feelings which lead to stress.

Stress can lead to certain health conditions. These health conditions make your stress worse and it is a cycle that is hard to break. When you become accustomed to journaling, you will see that your life is improving.

There are few situations that are actually stressful in themselves. It is our reactions to situations and events in our lives that create stress. Stress is compounded by work overload and not enough sleep. Your journals can help you reduce this and prevent a large majority of stress.

You should use your journals to:

1. Identify the source of your stress
2. Create ways to cope with the stress
3. Find ways to organize your life and activities and events in your life
4. Think of ways to nurture yourself (such as a massage or a bubble bath)
5. Evaluate your responses and opinions of stress in your life to see if you are being productive or counterproductive

Keeping a journal helps your situations become manageable. Keeping a journal offers you a distraction to many daily activities. It also gives you an outlet for your emotions. Journals can keep you on task by forcing you to approach your situation instead of pushing it aside "for later".

Cope With Stress Before It Is Too Late

By: Linda Allen

Each of us encounters stress in one form or another on a daily basis; we encounter stress multiple times during our every day lives. Even more important, however, than the actual things that cause us to experience stress is our bodies ability to cope with stress. Anxiety conditions appear as a result of cumulative stress over time. For most anxiety related conditions, the best that medicine can do is keep some of your stress symptoms at bay, and even that claim is questionable. The more that the health care professionals learn about the medications used to treat your problems, the more they learn that these drugs often have unwanted side effects that are worse than the stress itself. The root cause of stress is rarely if ever addressed in a medical model, only the symptoms are treated. Doctors rush through dozens of patients a day, prescribing drugs and monitoring their effects. They simple do not have the time, and sometimes do not have the know-how, to delve into the complicated and connected conditions stress evokes.

Human beings were simply not meant to carry around constant disturbances in our stress response, we were built to respond to stress quickly and then to have those stress hormones dissipate immediately. When our bodies are exposed to wave after wave of stress, they begin to break down. Anxiety disorders have physical, emotional, mental, and even spiritual effects. Physical effects include shortness of breath, heart palpitations, trembling or shaking, sweating, choking, nausea or abdominal distress, hot flashes or chills, dizziness or unsteadiness. Emotional effects include feelings such as worry, anger, panic, and terror. Mental effects including thinking you are going to die, or that you are going crazy or are out of control. Spiritual effects include alienation and feeling detached and out of touch with yourself and others.

This probably as good a place as any to introduce the concept that cortisol is not a purely toxic substance, although in most cases too much of it certainly wreaks bodily havoc. In many ways, cortisol can be thought of as functioning like cholesterol or insulin. A small amount of each of these substances is needed for proper functioning. Cholesterol is needed for the steroid metabolism. Insulin is necessary for blood-sugar control. And cortisol is needed for the restoration of energy following stress. However, if levels of any of these vital compounds exceed a certain small amount for any significant amount of time, you can run into health problems. The whole point here is balance, keeping cortisol levels from falling too low or rising too high. How you cope with stress is a choice. The easiest choice of all is to do nothing and let chronic stress and elevated cortisol levels slowly break down your bodily defenses and increase your risk for disease. The more difficult choices are to do something about your stress level, the way you handle it, or how to cope with stress.

If You Are Feeling Depressed Plants Can Make You Happy

This article which you are about to read has been written because I am aware of the epidemic of depression that we are suffering from in the western world, and this is my contribution to try and help.

My father spent his entire life with plants, it was his full time job, and when he retired he spent all of his days in his greenhouse and garden, and he was the happiest, most contented person that I have ever known.

If we fill our time taking care of plants we can get rid of stress, it is a scientifically proved thing. Taking care of our green friends (the ones with leaves not Martians!) we will discover new hidden sides of our personality and will get to know better how to love and care for others, firstly because a plant that we wont care for will die for sure.

Accepting a plant we are assuming a new responsibility, we are adopting a breathing being. This way, we learn just what it means to pay attention to those around you.

We have to concentrate over needs that are exterior to our ego. We become aware of the needs of another being: we know how much water the plant needs, how much light it gets, the intervals it needs to receive water again, and slowly we will transfer these cares and abilities in our social relations. We become more and more aware of others. Visual contact with a beautiful plant makes us realize our own beauty.

Studies show more and more that taking care of plants can be the most efficient method to improve our physical and emotional general condition. They have a serene effect, they can reduce stress and relax muscles and therefore improve the mood people taking care of them are in.

Before you read any further I just want to jump in here and say that I really do hope you are finding this helpful. I have written this because I do think that we can all improve our mental well being by getting more involved with plant life. So, having said that, lets continue.

Different studies have demonstrated that the existence of plants reduce mental exhaustion. When we are overwhelmed with work, we just have to look up for a couple of minutes to a plant and we will instantly feel more relaxed. In conclusion, plants fascinate and attract people, they break boredom and monotony generated by forced attention. The oxygen generated by plants creates a feeling of mental agility.

Some big plants placed in the right spot will help us insolate ourselves from annoying surrounding noises. The technique is the same as the one of hanging paintings in an empty room to minimize the echo effects. The thick leaves will absorb a part of the noises, including the sound of the phone, Xerox, printer or coffee maker, making these sounds a little bit friendlier.

May I conclude by saying that there is a lot more information out there on this subject just waiting for you to unearth it, if you will excuse the expression! So, happy digging.

Consider Taking Up Recreational Sports To Relieve Stress

Nobody has to tell you how stressful it is living in today's society. Because the cost of living has sky rocketed, we have to worry about paying bills, holding on to our jobs and providing for our children. Many of us work long hours seated at a desk, leaving us unable to get much exercise. To make matters worse, after we finally get home and put dinner on the table and get our children settled in for the night, we end up plopping down on the couch, in front of the television.

Some of us may head to the computer to surf the web or answer email correspondence. The combination of daily stress and lack of exercise has a poor effect on our bodies. It also impacts our minds because without a way to reduce stress, it may adversely our sleep habits and cause forms of insomnia. This can decrease our ability to think clearly during the day and can make it difficult to complete even simple tasks. That's why it is of great importance to find an outlet for our stress and have fun as well. One such way is to participate in recreational sports.

Participating in recreational sports is an excellent way to relieve stress. It can be as simple as joining your local bowling league. Bowling is a lot of fun and it's something that the whole family can participate in. You can rent the shoes for it at the alley and use their bowling balls, so you don't have to buy expensive gear. If you have extra space in your home, you can invest in a ping pong table.

It might not seem like it but ping pong is a great form of exercise because you have to move around your side of the table a lot to keep the ball in play. It also requires you to swing your arm which provides additional skill. Many people have turned to golf as a way to get in shape and relax. Golf requires a lot of walking and swinging of the club. Most golf courses are designed to look like parks so playing a game of golf can take you out of your stressful atmosphere at work and place you in a peaceful setting where you can get some exercise and relax at the same time.

There are many other choices available in recreational sports. You can choose to take a dance class, or go bicycle riding. You can team up with some friends and take daily walks around the neighborhood or even in the mall. Mall walking is very popular and many stores open early to allow people to walk through them without having to do so while the shoppers are there. There's also tennis, running and horseback riding. For the brave, there is parasailing and extreme sports like mountain climbing that burn calories and relieve stress while providing them with the thrills of a lifetime.
