Is Worrying Normal?

By

Photo: ayushveda.com

If you never had a bout with worry, check your heartbeat. Everyone has and will worry. Are your worries overwhelming you, then that's not normal. If you would like to step out of the worry zone, you've come to the right place.
You could call worry a survival trigger, that warns you of present danger, or to quickly change course. It is learning how to effectively deal with problematic issues that come up throughout your lifetime; that's the challenge. Not being able to sort through the muck grips millions of people year after year into a paralyzing unhealthy addiction, to the parasite called worry.
Have You Experienced Some of These?
• Endlessly worrying
• You would like to stop but can't
• Feeling overwhelmed
• Anxiety attacks
• Rapid heartbeat
• Sleepless nights
• Dwelling on "what if's"
• Digestive problems
• Heartaches
• Muscle tightness
• Your family avoids you
Worrying if left unchecked and unresolved will cause undue stress, and stress has been known to cause illness in both the body and mind.
Why do You Worry?
Are you worried right now? Do you worry about things that you were not able to control in the past, and do you also worry about things that can't be foreseen in the future. Being too preoccupied with things that are no longer within your reach and things not yet within your reach will keep you in an endless state of worry. When you identify the triggers, you'll be able to think clearly and deal with the issues at hand.
Which Realm are You Living In?
Do you sometimes find yourself dwelling on decisions you made in the past? For example: What if you had just saved a little money back then, or taken that other job instead of this one? Or wished you had spent more time with a loved one? Do you really believe your life would be better today? You must always remember that the past has taken care of itself. It can't be changed. Begin excepting that reality and quelling the guilt of the past is your first step to conquering and overcoming worry.
Worrying about events that may never come to pass can be just as dangerous. Future worries are yet another unproductive activity you don't want to be caught in. You have no control and will never have control of the future. However, preparing yourself and your family for future events are important. For example, there's a stark difference between saving money for the future versus worrying about the sky falling.
Tiger Shark or Jellyfish?
Now we come to the present, and perhaps, the most challenging time period for a worrier. Why, because this is where you must meet reality. You can choose to have the heart of a tiger shark, and swallow up your worries. Or perhaps, a jellyfish and float back into the lonely dark endless abyss, probably not.
Start today and find your solution here. Don't focus on the past, and remember the future is not staring you in the face yet. Become engaged now, so that any present problems will be in clear view. When you begin the process of sorting through the murky waters, you will discover that your anxieties about the past and the future will slowly sink to the bottom and eventually melt away.

How To Recognise Social Anxiety In Your Child Or Teenager

By
Photo: anxietydisordersinchildren.net

Social anxiety disorder does not only affect the adult population, it can also affect children and teenagers. A high percentage of adults who suffer from this disorder admit to it actually starting during their childhood and teenage years and remaining with them into adulthood. It is thought that approximately one in one hundred youngsters suffer with social anxiety disorder. Having to deal with the disorder during childhood and teenage years can often be more debilitating than in later years as a grown adult. Youngsters are very susceptible to negative peer pressure and things others may say or think about them. If the disorder is not recognised and treated it will develop deeper and will be more likely to remain with them into their adult years. As a parent it is important to recognise the symptoms of social anxiety disorder in your child or teenager as soon as possible and to seek expert help from your family doctor or paediatrician.
Here are some warning signs to look out for:
  • Avoiding being the centre of attention at all costs
  • Do not like being singled out for praise either at home or school
  • They try to be "invisible" in a classroom situation so they will not be called on to answer a question or speak out in front of the class
  • Do not want to invite friends over or go to someone else's house for a sleepover or a party
  • Avoid using the telephone
  • Have trouble speaking in public, will often let you order for them at a restaurant rather than speak up and tell the waiter or waitress what they would like
  • Do not make eye contact when someone speaks to them
  • If asked a question they will mumble or give one word answers
You may also notice some physical signs that they are uncomfortable or struggling to cope in a social situation, such as:
  • Sweating
  • Feeling dizzy
  • Sickness or diarrhea
  • Younger children may cry for no apparent reason
Youngsters who are suffering with this disorder will often be irritable, not get enough sleep, not be able to concentrate on schoolwork etc and so their education may begin to suffer.
If you suspect that your child or teenager may be suffering from social anxiety disorder you first need a correct diagnosis from your doctor or specialist who can then recommend the best course of treatment to help them to deal with and hopefully overcome this crippling disorder. If diagnosed and treated at an early age then they may not have to deal with the disorder as they grow into adulthood.

Stress and Anxiety Relief Without Drugs

By Dan McBee
In order to solve a problem you must first understand the problem.
While Stress and Anxiety may be the result of an outside event or situation, it has more to do with your ability to cope with the event or situation. What really causes you to get stressed out is fear.
Two Main Types of Fear
One type of fear is healthy fear, this would be like having a fear of running in front of cars, obviously it is healthy to fear what could happen if you ran out in front of a car. Placing your hand on a hot stove or sticking a finger in a light socket are other examples of healthy fear.
The other type of fear is the unhealthy type of fear, the fear of losing something you have or not getting something you want.
This is the kind of fear that causes you to feel stressed and anxious.
Here are 6 tips you can practice to improve your ability to live life on life's terms.
1. Remember That You Are Not Your Mind - when you practice remembering that who you really are is soul, and that your mind is supposed to be your servant, you will begin gaining control of your mind. Your mind should be the servant to your soul. I know this may seem a little strange at first, but if you will just remind your mind to be your servant, you will actually begin to feel the difference.
2. Nothing Is Worth Your Peace Of Mind - Repeat this as often as you feel yourself getting stressed and tense.
Teaching your mind that nothing is more important to you than your peace of mind, your mind will begin to quiet and your life will become less stressful.
3. This Too Will Pass - nothing lasts forever, the good times and the bad both pass, as you continue your new journey to peace and tranquility, you will discover that much of what had you stressed out over, works out on its own and that if you have a mind that was calm you are able to make a better choice.
4. Practice Living in the Now!! - When you are fearing the future or regretting the past, you are peeing on the present. I believe the present is called the present because it is the gift from God. When you live in the present you are more open to seeing, hearing and feeling the miracles that occur around you every day.
5. Practice Does not Make Perfect- What practice actually creates is permanent. You can practice a bad golf swing a million times but it will still be a bad golf swing. Therefore it requires practicing the right swing over and over to make it a permanent part of your life.
6. If You Keep On Doing What Your Doing, You Will Keep On Getting What Your Getting- In order to change the way you experience life you have to pay more attention to the way in which you deal with life. Do you respond or react when something goes wrong in your life. Are you a problem solver or a problem creator. Are you a victim of life or a participant.
While looking deep inside ourselves may not always be easy, the result will enrich your life in ways you beyond your imagination.
Disclaimer- If you are currently on medication, please do not go off your medication without the direction of your doctor. Medications can play an important role in your journey to self discovery while you practice a new way of thinking!

Are You Anxious, Nervous, Worried Or Stressed?

By Willie Horton
Do you ever feel uncomfortable, anxious or tense? Are there things that you worry about - things that sometimes even keep you awake at night? Are you ever nervous or apprehensive? Do you get hassled or lose your temper easily? Do you feel that you suffer from stress? If you perceive yourself to be suffering from any of these afflictions, it is just that - nothing more than a perception. Because none of these problems is real - no matter how real they might appear to you, they are nothing more than creations of your own mind. You are letting your mind play tricks on you. Your inner self cannot be anxious, nervous or uncertain. Worry and stress are unknown to the real you - the part of you that is beyond these useless forms of thought but that part of that is shielded from you by those self same thoughts. All these problems - and many more - are symptoms of an over-active personality - when you feel that you're suffering from them, it's only your personality trying to trip up the real you. Most of the time, it succeeds.
What you must realize is that your personality - a word derived from the Latin word persona, meaning a mask - is nothing more than a mask that not only hides the real you from everyone else, it has you completely fooled into thinking that it is, in fact, who you are. This mask tries to ensure that you never actually turn up to what is actually going on in the here and now. You may be interested in learning that psychology tells us that your personality is a series of snapshots of events and people that impressed you during your early childhood - generally speaking before the age of eleven or twelve - the period of our lives that we normally call our formative years. You took snapshots of these things because they were big enough to make you feel good or bad about yourself at the time. Unfortunately, psychology also confirms that the normal person is far more likely to dwell on the negative rather than the positive snapshots. These snapshots - which clearly have nothing to do with your current adult life - are the source of all the afflictions that I listed at the start of this article. Your predisposition towards the negative is a fertile seedbed for all the useless, toxic, self-destructive thoughts that create anxiety, worry, doubt and stress.
You see, your subconscious mind is still obsessed with those snapshots and this obsession is what creates your personality. In other words, your personality isn't real - it may have got you to where you are and you may be very fond of it - but be careful you don't fall in love with an illusion because, chances are, your personality is holding you back from an effortlessly happy and successful life. Chances are, your personality is moving you in the wrong direction in your life.
To rid your life of the symptoms from which only your imaginary personality can suffer - stress, worry, anxiety, doubt, fear, loneliness - you need to circumvent your personality, your perceived weaknesses and strengths. You need to forget about who you think you are and start finding out who you can really be. You've got to lose your life to find it! In other words, you need to go searching within for the real you because not only does the real you not know stress, worry, doubt, not only is the real you fearless, the real you is capable of achieving effortless success and happiness - it can effortlessly create the life that your heart desires for you. The great thing is that you don't have to look too hard to find the real you - it is simply waiting to be discovered. You'll find the real you in the quiet of a reflective moment, in the experience of one of those perfect "natural high" moments that we've all experienced at some point in our lives - where peace and contentment reign.
But there is absolutely no point in waiting for the next peak moment to hit you. You want to get over the illusions of stress and worry right now, don't you? Well, you can start that wonderful journey straight away by doing a little meditation. Meditation, which is often misunderstood, develops your mental discipline - it puts you in control of your own mind rather than the way in which you have habitually surrendered control to your pre-programmed subconscious mind - and suffered the consequences. When you meditate you stop the noise in your head - you stop giving your attention to the useless thoughts that create stress and worry and start giving your attention to the simply and perfect reality of the present moment. In doing so, you will begin to appreciate and experience that anxiety, tension and fear are simply nothing more than useless thoughts - they are not reality - and that a clear, focused and present mind (the real you) simply has not got the time for such nonsense - it has much more important work to do on your behalf if only you would let it.

Anxiety Treatment With Drugs

By: Jamie Snodgrass
Anxiety
Do you often find yourself stressed out because of certain misfortunes of the past or uncertainty of future? How frequently do you feel a pang of an unpleasant emotion in anticipation of some ill- defined calamity? If very often it is time for you to realize that you are suffering from some anxiety disorder that causes innumerable psychological and physical tribulations.

How to get help?
Once diagnosed, anxiety can be treated fairly fast. There are many ways of treating anxiety.
  • Since anxiety a psychologically originated disease, at the primary stage it can be treated through counseling provided by, psychologists, social workers, and counselors. However these counselors should have specialized in behavior therapy or cognitive development or in any such related area.
  • Anxiety can be cured by cured by prescribed medications. Psychiatrists or physicians usually prescribe anti depressants or anti anxiety drugs that help during the advanced stages of anxiety.
  • Other ways of treatment are group therapies or combination of all the above. This would mean psychologists and counselors work closely with the physicians and psychiatrists and help the patients.
Anxiety drugs:
While focusing on the second method of treatment, namely intake of prescribed drugs, we must realize certain important facts about drugs prescription.
  • The physician begins by giving low dose of the drug at first however gradually increases it.
  • These drugs have side effects; however the body gets accustomed to them over the passage of time.
  • The dosage is tapered slowly once the doctor feels that the patient is nearing normal state.
Some anxiety drugs:
Some of the anxiety drugs are given below.
  • Doxepin : is a common drug with regular side effect incase of over dosage. Common side effects like nausea and vomiting
  • Clomipramine: over dosage can toxicity to the individual.
  • Amoxipine: it comes along with the general instructions of how to use the drugs and the common side effects.
  • Ziprasidone: is another kind to monitor anxious behavior.
  • Moclobemide: this is taken to regulate the mental functioning.
Anxiety Pills
Severe anxiety is unfortunately one item among the unwanted stuff. The more one tries to forget an experience that caused fear or severe discomfort, the stronger the memory of it becomes. When people suffer from recurring panic attacks or from a specific phobia such as that of height, bridges or highways, they usually don't think of a specific memory or thought as the real culprit behind their predicament, but there often is one

Anxiety and pills:
Anxiety is more of a mental and psychological condition which many people feel cannot be cured (like physical ailments) using medicines. But the reality is the fact that anxiety can be controlled using drugs called "tranquilizers" whose basic aim is to relive stress and make the patient feel better and more positive about life. Also known as "chill pills" some drugs can really help the patients a lot. Anticonvulsants like Neurontin and Gabitril for anxiety. Seroquel, which works on schizophrenia and manic depression, also seems to control anxiety and stabilize sleep patterns in low doses. There was a study in which one group of dental-phobic patients was given Geodon, an anti-psychotic, and another group was given Valium before a dental visit. Geodon was just as effective as Valium, but without the sedative effect.

The most popular of these tranquilizers is Valium, which doctors have long prescribed to relieve symptoms of anxiety. The drug is also used to lessen the anxiety, agitation and tremors that occur during alcohol withdrawal.
The results of one study conducted in 1993 showed that valerian and hops are calming to the central nervous system and reduce depression and anxiety. In fact, the herbs were reported to work faster than the prescription drugs. Hops and valerian worked in only two weeks, as opposed to a longer period required for conventional drugs. The herbs also caused far fewer side effects.

Anxiety pills and their future:
The chemical cousin to Neurontin, Pregabalin, is an anticonvulsant that's in trials. It's also being looked at for social-phobia anxiety disorders. There's another type of drug in development that works on regulating the pathway of the stress hormone cortisol directly. But that's down the line.
Anxiety and non-prescribed remedies:
Too many people self-medicate their anxiety with alcohol or marijuana. While those options might bring acute relief, later on they can lead to a worsening of anxiety symptoms. So, unfortunately, they represent a bad pharmacological choice.

Why take drugs?
Drugs help a great deal to overcome that problems arising out of anxiety. Following are some of the reasons why drugs are advisable.
  • They help to reduce extreme sadness.
  • They reduce lack of interest in life.
  • They help to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder.
  • They also cure the pain arising out of problems like approaching menopause etc
Thus, prescription drugs are advisable; however one must be aware of its side effects, the most vital of which is addiction.

Being Sensitive About the Cause of Anxiety

By Anabella T. Lopez
The modern generation is filled with troublesome conditions that stress out the body too much. If we can have some time to know what are those cause of anxiety then we might do our part to impede the conditions from even happening. Now to become a help, this article will tackle some of the causes that you must be sensitive about:
1. One of the most common causes of anxiety is the stress at work and the stress we meet because of personal affairs. The worry we incessantly feeds the body can lead to the feeling of being anxious then panic attacks may come next! Do not wait before problems can escalate into bigger ones because you will be creating a lot of trouble to the body if you do this hence illnesses may come next to the scene.
2. Bear in mind that both anxiety and panic attack are factors that the mind contrived. Because of this, your view towards life is another cause of anxiety. In view of this, make it a point to look at life with positive attitude. Try to look at the hay instead of the needles. This means that you must look at the resources that life gave you instead of thinking how big your problems are.
3. Anxiety disorders are known to run in families. Because of this, if one of your relative is suffering from one then your chance of obtaining another is big. Also, growing up inside a house where fear and anxiety are two of the most constant emotions shown to children can further "teach" them to become anxious towards life as well. Also, if ever a child grows up with an abusive home, then such child will normally expect the worse at all times.
Although some people are not bothered about stress or anxiety, there are times when the condition becomes too intense that it impedes with the normal functions of life. In case you are always anxious and worried then it will be hard for you to fully enjoy life in general. Also, the cause of anxiety will create some trouble on the manner that you are making friends, the manner that you perform at work, and various other things about life. There are also moments when people would revert to alcohol or drug abuse to ease out the tensions they have inside. The use of drugs and alcohol to care for anxiety is tremendously dangerous.

Stress And Anxiety The Killer Among Us

By: Daniel Richard

Lets face it since September 11th, our lives have changed forever. Weve seen war in Iraq and Afghanistan, with no end in sight. Weve seen Wall Street collapse, and peoples life savings go down the drain. The economy hit the tank and people are in fear of losing their jobs, their homes, and everything precious to them. So its no wonder people are stressed, and have anxiety.

Stress and anxiety is a very real problem if its not treated properly. Lots of people dont even realize they have stress until it starts to effect their lives or their health. Stress and anxiety can cause all kinds of health problems such as high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, ect. But it can also cause lots of problems in your relationships, your family and so on. Money problems is the worst kind of stress there is, it can literally drive you crazy, but there is help out there you just have to let yourself get the help that is right for you.

I myself, have experienced stress and anxiety. About ten years ago I had really bad neck pain that would not go away. I went to the doctors several times, I even had a MRI done and it kept showing nothing wrong. I also at the same time could not be in a small room or enclosed area, because I would start to sweat, and feel like I was going to faint. My doctor then suggested It may be stress, so he showed me some techniques that I could do at home, and after about two weeks of trying his techniques, my neck pain went away and it never bothered me again, or the anxiety of being in enclosed areas, it was great. So in this article I will show you a little of what he taught me.

The first thing my doctor showed me was to look at things as positive as you can, in other words if something bad happens think of something about it thats positive. I know that might sound corny, but it works. If you have a bad day at work, leave it at work! Tell yourself that tomorrow will be better day, and so on, do this for every negative thing, make it positive even if its just a good fantasy thought.

The second thing he showed me was, music therapy that I could use at home. Its music with whats called Binaural Beats to help your mind relax. I downloaded it to my Mp3 player, and it really makes you relax, it has soft music with sounds of birds chirping and waterfalls, very calming. He told me for the best results find a quiet place with no distractions, use headphones and listen to it for about 30 minutes. It took a few times but it really help me out.

In conclusion, if you think that stress is starting to take over your life try some of the techniques in the article and if it does not help and you need more information please see link bellow.

Anxiety - Top Twelve Effects of Anxiety on Your Physical and Mental Health

By Bethany Henshaw
Everyone knows what anxiety feels like. Anxiety is a normal body reaction to stressful situations or to a threat that the mind perceives. Although the word connotes ugly images of nervousness, trembling and intense sweating, anxiety by itself is not totally bad for the body. In fact, it is a necessary reaction which allows the brain to activate our "fight or flight" response so that the body can protect itself from danger. It is what allows us to flee from an attacking stranger, or to jump from a burning house to save ourselves from fire.
Yet, anxiety can take its toll on the body and the mind, if it becomes excessive. A regular bout of anxiety where symptoms become too evident that they distract a person from doing his tasks is a serious concern. If these symptoms happen several times a day, then an anxiety disorder is already taking place in the person's mind.
An anxiety disorder should not be taken lightly. If unaddressed soon or properly, the condition may worsen and can lead to depression, especially among young adults. The most immediate effect of anxiety in a person is it causes upheavals in his personal and professional life. The symptoms can be so debilitating sometimes that a person with this kind of disorder would sometimes prefer to just stay at home, especially if the disorder is also coupled with agoraphobia which is the constant fear that an anxiety attack will happen at a public place and escape is not possible.
Here are the top 12 most common effects of anxiety on the physical, mental and emotional health of a person:
1. Hyperventilation or breathing rapidly may result during an anxiety attack which can make you feel shaky, a little dizzy or light headed
2. Tension in the muscles may result to headaches and overall discomfort.
3. An elevated blood pressure can make you uneasy and dizzy, sometimes nauseous.
4. Your digestive system will be affected and may cause diarrhea or vomiting.
5. Your sleep patterns may be affected, causing you sleepless nights which results to chronic fatigue.
6. You may have feelings of inadequacy and dependence on others. You may experience "catastrophizing" which means you may develop thoughts of impending danger or calamity which you feel is beyond your control.
7. You may feel excessive, often irrational fear which grips you sometimes in the middle of the night. You become constantly irritable and unable to concentrate.
8. You may feel frustrated easily and may have a very poor image of yourself. Your confidence level is affected. Your social skills become almost nil, as worries about your "imperfections" or " inadequacies" may stop you from building relationships.
9. You may develop other unhealthy coping mechanisms such as excessive drinking, smoking or drug abuse.
10. You may intentionally avoid experiences that otherwise would have enriched your life. You may not be able to maintain meaningful and gratifying relationships. Instead you may be drawn towards people who have the same outlook as yours or help you avoid situations that may have helped you overcome your anxiety.
11. Your self esteem maybe affected and you may develop the fear of public places (agoraphobia) which can make you unable to go beyond your comfort zones.
12. You may develop depression and if the condition remains untreated for a long time, you may start having suicidal thoughts.
If you or a person you know suffer from an anxiety disorder, do not hesitate to go to an authorized medical care giver, either a medical doctor or a psychotherapist. Do not feel that you are alone and can not go to anyone about your problem. After all, you are just one of the 40 million Americans who have been diagnosed with this condition.
You need to help yourself first, before help can come to you. Pay attention to what your body is telling you and seek help as early as possible.
