Overcoming Failure - It's A Challenge That You Can Overcome

 By

Photo: deliverfreedom.com

You may have heard of people encouraging you to bounce back from defeat or hardships. Well, talk is cheap, and I do not know about you, but sometimes, I struggle with trying to be resilient. However, over the years, I have learnt that overcoming failure is possible. It is a challenge in itself, and you can overcome it. I am being real with you. It may not be easy, but check out these points that I will be talking about today.
There is a saying that goes, "to err is human" and that is so true. None of us are perfect, so we are bound to make mistakes in life. What is important is that you learn from those mistakes. Mistakes are bound to happen, but a person who uses that mistake as a learning experience to propel him to greater heights is someone who is wise. In fact, you can even use that mistake to motivate you to succeed in future. That's how some people redeem themselves. And they do that in style. Overcoming failure can be accomplished when you know how you can learn from your past mistake and when you use that mistake to propel you to greater success.

It is important that you do not give up in your endeavors no matter how big the blunder was. I have made many huge blunders in the past, and the consequences cost me dearly. However, that does not mean I call it quits. That is really not an option when it comes to being resilient. Do not throw in the towel even when your circumstances seem bleak. The lack of success should not be a reason for you to quit. Think about the prize that lies ahead and push yourself toward that goal. Imagine how satisfied and fulfilled you will feel once you have accomplished it.

When you are trying to bounce back from a setback, you should always remind yourself that you can succeed. Assuring yourself plays a huge part in overcoming failure. It is through self assurance that many of today's professional athletes become successful in their sport. One particular example is Tiger Woods. He would go through the routine of talking to himself, saying that he can succeed in tournaments. Look at how successful he has become throughout his career.

I hope you have a better understanding about overcoming failure. Don't give up. Instead, keep assuring yourself and use that mistake to propel you to greater success.

How to Eliminate Stress by Increasing Productivity

By

Photo: eventmanagerblog.com

Self improvement is hard work, at least in the beginning, and may not be everybody's cup of tea. All improvements to your physical and emotional self lead to helping you increase your productivity. Take exercise and diet for example. It's really tough to get started but after just a few days you begin to feel better, lose weight or at least inches and associate that feeling of well being and accomplishment to your new lifestyle changes.
We are never finished with the job of improving ourselves. Everything is moving and changing at all times. Your body changes and renews itself on a minute to minute basis and we are not physically the same one day as we are the next.
The same goes for learning and improving ourselves mentally. Did you know that the number one cause of stress for most people is? Unfinished projects! Being able to boost Normal productivity levels to Dynamic Productivity levels will help you eliminate that nasty health busting stress that nags at you when you have unfinished business.
Take a moment to look at yourself and review your thoughts for today. How many of them can be related in some way to an unfinished task or project?
For example:
• "Oh, I was supposed to have this done by 11 and it's already 3."
• "Thanksgiving is in three days. I have twenty people coming for a sit down dinner and I haven't even started cleaning the house or planning the dinner."
• "Oh man, there's volume 7 of "Learn to Speak Conversational German in 7 Weeks" and I haven't even opened the first one!"
• "I need to create a budget."
• "I forgot to pay the bills last week"
I could go on but, you get the picture.
Assuming that unfinished tasks are the number one source of stress it would make sense to spend some time assessing your personal list of the unfinished business.
• Make a list of everything you have left undone.
• Prioritize that list with the biggest, most important in first place and work back from there.
• Write the most important task on a new sheet of paper and don't look at any of the rest of them until the first one is finished.
• Download the free tool, Focus Booster. (Google it and you will find a link for a free download.) Focus Booster is a little timer that sits on your desk top and uses a few tricks to keep you focused. Start the timer and don't work on anything else, get something to eat, go to the bathroom or answer the phone until the timer goes off. Focus only on the task at hand.
• When this task is complete, move on to #2 on your list.
You'll be amazed at how relieved, successful and self confident this can make you feel.
If you can just get it together to complete that first project on your list it's very possible that you will become addicted to the "good feeling" of self worth and personal productivity that completion of a project or task can give you.
Two years ago, I wrote a cookbook of recipes from the popular Mexican restaurant that I owned for 26 years. Finally, after two years of procrastination the book is finally on line and for sale! I used the list and timer technique to break out of the procrastination mind set and now I'm on a roll! You can be two!! Your Increased Productivity starts today!

Useful Tips To Overcome Forgetfulness

By:

Photo: bharatstudent.com

Don't remember where you kept your car keys? Do you frequently forget to turn up for appointments? Or do you often forget where you kept your glasses, wallet etc? Forgetfulness is a very common problem among all. However, this doesn't mean that people have poor memory. First, let me share one of my graveling personal experiences. Yesterday, when I was watching one of my favorite programs, "How I Met Your Mother" on one of the channels that is included in my Dish TV Packages, I had a casual chat with my wife about an interesting topic. It was about forgetfulness.

The topic stemmed when she recalled an incident that I would like to describe. Last month, during our Christmas holidays, my wife and I went to our relatives' place. When we were about to leave the house, I couldn't recollect where I had kept my car keys. My wife and I restlessly searched for about 20 minutes. At last, when I went to the car, it was there comfortably hanging in our car door. Woooof, what a surprise? Thank God, it was safe. Many people would have experienced similar situations. It's actually because of our absent-mindedness. Many of us have the problem of forgetfulness, don't we? Well, then don't forget to scroll down to find some useful information on how to overcome forgetfulness.

Before that, let's explore what could really be the reason for absent-mindedness? Some people attribute absent-mindedness to genetic disorders. Nevertheless, it could be as a result of other external factors like excessive smoking or drinking, or injuries to the head. It may also be due to stress-related factors like pressure at work, family problems, financial problems, relationship problems etc. And the reason why people often forget where they kept their things is because they wouldn't have really paid attention to it when they kept it. Studies have revealed that lack of vitamins could lead to forgetfulness. To be more specific, Vitamin B12 plays a vital role in the development of the nervous system. And deficiency of folic acid may also lead to absent-mindedness. Include these vital vitamins in your food to overcome the problem of forgetfulness.

Here are some general strategies to overcome forgetfulness.

Improve your memory by engaging in brain games in your leisure. Proper rest is very important. Get enough sleep. Have fixed sleep timings.

Make use of the technology to your advantage. If you forget to take your tablets or forget to do things on time, use your cell phone, wristwatch, or alarm clock to set alarm.

If you are the kind of person who stays on the computer for most part of the day, you may also use it to remind you about your schedules. I use Microsoft Outlook to alert me do my work on time. Access the 'Reminders' feature on MS Outlook to set the date and time of the events. It pops up with a remainder on the time that you have set.

Have specific place to keep your things. This can be very helpful to avoid forget where you kept your things. They include things like car keys, house door keys, important files, tools, flashlight, shaving set, umbrellas, and the list is just endless. Have a specific place like a cupboard in your room to keep important things. And don't forget to keep them back in their place after using them.

Another useful way of remembering things is to use mnemonics. This method works wonders for students to prepare for their exam. As an example, let me cite a saying that's prevalent among office goers. 'Thank God Its Friday'. This can easily be remembered as 'TGIF'. All you need to do is repeat the word three or four times and it will get registered in your minds. Mnemonics can be useful to remember words as well as numbers. And try connecting things with images and scenarios. This will acts as triggers to the mind to recall the event or things. Visualizing the image of an object can be helpful to remember things much better.

I was one of those absent-minded professors not too long ago. But things have changed considerably. I'm able to remember things better. Hey, just a second, my wife wants my help. It seems like she has missed her handbag. Let me go and help her find it. That's it folks. It's your turn to help your spouse!

When Stress Becomes Unbearable

 By: Tony Robinson

A soldier, just back from the war in Iraq, is haunted by
nightmares of bodies on the battlefield. A woman keeps replaying
in her mind the day that she was brutally raped. A man has
flashbacks of the time that he was beaten by his step-father.
These incidents are the result of stress--a special kind of
stress. It is a stress so overpowering, so overwhelming that it
is known as post-traumatic stress disorder.

The important thing to remember about post-traumatic stress
disorder is that it is far more common than one might think.
First brought to the public's attention following the Vietnam
War, post-traumatic stress disorder afflicts everyone from
earthquake victims to survivors of kidnapping. Often, PTSD, as
it is known, occurs when an individual's life has been
threatened, or the life of someone close to him or her has been
jeopardized. More than five million people are believed to be
affected by the disorder.

There are a number of tell-tale signs of post-traumatic stress
disorder. For instance, an individual might experience continual
flashbacks or nightmares. He or she may experience feelings of
irritability or frustration. He or she might have an exaggerated
startle response, such as jumping when hearing a noise in an
otherwise quiet room. He or she may lose interest in work,
relationships, or other things that used to be enjoyed. The
symptoms may become especially pronounced when the anniversary
of the traumatic event rolls around.

Although stories of soldiers with PTSD are well-known, women
are actually more susceptible to the disorder. Also, there is
evidence that there may be a genetic predisposition for PTSD.
PTSD can lead to major depression, alcoholism, or drug abuse. If
a specific person was responsible for the trauma--say a husband,
boyfriend, or neighbor--the after-effects may be particularly
bad.

It is interesting to note that a specific sound or smell can
trigger a flashback for an individual suffering from PTSD. This
is part of the reason that the disorder is so troubling. In
essence, the individual has difficulty escaping the memory of
what happened to him or her. The recurring nightmares and
flashbacks are signs that the individual has not been able to
process the memory appropriately.

An individual afflicted with PTSD may feel a sense of
hopelessness. Since his or her ordeal seems to be repeating
itself, he or she may find it difficult to come to terms with
the event. This is why PTSD is such a debilitating condition.
However, it is important to recognize the fact that there is
hope for those struggling with this disorder. Through talk
therapy and medication, an individual can learn how to properly
process the traumatic memory. The nightmares and flashbacks
eventually disappear, as the individual receives a new leash on
life.

It should be pointed out that there is no instant fix or cure
for PTSD. It can haunt people for months, if not years. It is a
mental condition that is still shrouded in a great deal of
secrecy. There are also many misunderstandings about the
disorder. It may cause someone to miss work, or to lose his or
her job entirely. It can wreck marriages and other close
relationships. A great deal of additional research needs to be
done in order to adequately address the problem of PTSD.

In the meantime, there are specific steps you can take to
lessen the likelihood that you will suffer from the disorder. If
you have become the victim of a traumatic event, seek help
immediately. Discuss the incident with your family doctor and
ask him or her for a referral to a therapist and psychiatrist.
Don't wait until your symptoms are out of control before you
seek help.

While this type of stress is not curable, it is entirely
treatable. The important thing for you to remember is that you
are not alone, that there are a number of mental health experts
who stand ready to help you. Also, try to think of yourself as a
survivor rather than as a victim. You may find you are better
able to cope with the stress that way. Also, recognize the fact
that the incident, though traumatic, has passed. Once you
realize that you are unlikely again to go through such a horror,
you may be able to put the incident into the proper perspective.

Ways You Can Reduce Stress Today

By: Dennis Miller

One of first steps towards enjoying a more stress-free life is to know where it's coming from - be it a so-called external source or from yourself.

Your goal is not only to identify as many of your sources of stress as possible, but with as great as precision as possible, and to break your sources of stress down into the 'right size' sources. If you're not sure what's making you stressed, how are you supposed to cope with, or eliminate this stress? Similarly, if you lump all your stresses into one gynormous stress, how are you supposed to even want to begin to tackle your stress?

1:Brainstorm on a blank piece of paper anything or anyone (actions, people and attitudes) that you feel is contributing to your current stress level.

Start off with external actions and people. Then look at how you may, unconsciously or not, be contributing to your own stress, whether it's your mind-talk or attitude or your stress coping skills. For example, ask yourself the following:

-What actions (jobs to do, events and deadlines) do I associate with my stress? -What people (family, friends, colleagues) do I associate with my stress? -How does I contribute to my own stress (attitude/thoughts, feelings, behaviors/habits)?

2:Be as specific as possible, by asking yourself, the 5 W questions - who/what, where, when, why and how.

You want to know what specifically is stressing you so that you can tackle each of the sources of stress one by one, in a manageable fashion, and either eliminate or reduce them.

Anytime you sense that you are being too vague for it to help you, do a stress-buster, and go in for the specific. Classic examples are your stress excuses or cover-ups, such as "It's just a hectic time of year", or "Whenever I'm with Mary, we end up fighting about silly things" or "I just have a nervous personality, that's all".

3:Break down each Stress Source into a Manageable Stress Issue:

If you say simply, "my husband stresses me", you are unlikely to be able to reduce the stress you feel around him, unless you leave him. If instead you identify that "my husband stresses me when he talks about finances...", this already has become more manageable issue. And if you then identify that it's really only when you talk about the phone bill that it gets stressful, then you are able to focus in on one specific stress source.

Stress in Children: Help Your Child Overcome Stress and Enjoy Their Childhood

Childhood should not be stressful but in today’s culture, stress in children is becoming more and more frequent. With the pressures of school, sports, and all that the media throws at our children, it’s pretty clear how a child can quickly feel overwhelmed!
As parents, we need to be aware of what our children are feeling. We need to be connected and spend enough time with our child in order to see the signs of stress in our kids. If you believe your child could be experiencing stress, consider the following:
What are some sources of stress in children?
Changes and situations in family dynamics, school, friends, an overabundance of activities, not enough down-time or creative outlets, too much TV, social pressures, low self-esteem, separation from parents, or other sources unique to your child.
What are some symptoms of stress in children?
While it may be difficult to recognize symptoms of stress in children, below are some symptoms that may alert you to stress: mood swings, sleep patterns changes, acting out, bedwetting, frequent stomachaches and headaches, trouble concentrating, incomplete schoolwork, a change in academic performance, and/or withdrawing or isolating oneself. Some children may start lying, defying authority, or bullying other children while others may suffer from nightmares, clinginess to their parents, or overreacting to what are simply small problems. Very young children may begin new habits such as hair twirling, picking their nose, sucking their thumb, or other regressive behaviors.
Helping to Reduce Stress in Children
Stress Reduction Tip #1: To start, proper nutrition and enough sleep must be ensured. The child will be unable to handle life’s daily stresses if they do not have enough sleep or proper nutrients.
Stress Reduction Tip #2: Spending time with your child without distractions can help your child to open up and discuss what could be bothering them.
Stress Reduction Tip #3: Be willing to listen to your child’s fears and offer loving and gentle guidance.
Stress Reduction Tip #4: Exercise can help burn off extra steam, so get your child moving. Take a walk together or play an active game to help encourage exercise and provide an environment where your child can feel secure enough to open-up to you.
Stress Reduction Tip #5: Encouraging your child to keep a journal to jot down their thoughts and feelings can help the child experiencing stress to become aware of what they’re feeling and give them another outlet.
Stress Reduction Tip #6: If you know of a potentially stressful situation coming up like a doctor’s appointment, give your child plenty of notice so it’s not sprung on them. Be careful, though, of too much information as it can actually cause more stress. Be “matter of fact” and be available if your child needs to discuss what they are fearing.
Stress Reduction Tip #7: Let your child know that some level of stress is normal. It’s OK to feel anxious or stressed and that other people feel the same feelings, too.
With some gentle guidance and loving support, your child can get through their stressful situation. Parental support and love is vital to a child struggling.

Stress the Biggest Killer of Our Times and it's Causes

Suffering from stress can weaken our immune system and that can lead to a lot of health problems. Some of these problems can be of a psychological nature but a lot of them tend to be physical . Stress can lead to higher blood pressure, which can give us a lot of heart problems and as we all know heart disease is one of the biggest killers of our times.

Stress can be caused many factors such as our careers, unhappy married life, financial difficulties, the behavior of our kids, bereavement etc. We will examine some these causes a little more closely and try to discover how they can lead to stress.

As we all know we all have to go out to work to make a living and job stress can becaused by having higher expectations of our selves or having these placed on us by our colleagues or our bosses. Trying to achieve some things beyond our capabilities leads to a lot of disappointment and which can ultimately lead to stress. Working in cramped or untidy environments can also lead to stressful situations at the work place. Having an overpowering or overbearing boss can also lead to a frustrating work experience which can lead to job stress.

Stress can be caused by having a life partner that you no longer get on with and this can lead to a very unhappy home life and it can get so bad at times that you can not face going back to your house, because you know as soon as you enter the house, you are going to be greeted with abuse or a very cold welcome at the least and this can affect all areas of your life. Going through an acrimonious divorce can also give us a lot of stress. An unhappy home life can also derive from having rebellious children or setting goals beyond the capabilities of our kids and failure to achieve these goals can give both the parents and children sleepless nights and this can give all the parties concerned a lot of stress.

Stress can also be caused by having lost a dear one and coming to terms with a life without them. This sort of stress is called emotional stress and this can lead to a lot of health problems. Our brains are like electrical circuits and what can happen if we overload a circuit? Yes you guessed that right! You blow a fuse and this is exactly what happens when we overload our brains with too much emotional stress. we can have a breakdown, which could be psychological or physical.

And finally stress can be caused by having unmanageable debts as well. If you have more money going out of your bank account than you have coming in, this is a constant source of worry and pressure which ultimately leads to stress. Bills keep dropping through the letterbox and letters from your creditors are painful reminders of the dire consequences if your financial situation doesn't improve soon can give you sleepless nights, which can lead to unbearable stress.

Cancer Issues - Managing The Associated Stress

Stress is a likely occurrence for families facing cancer. It is helpful to know some practical ways to alleviate stress, or avoid it all together. Some of the most basic methods are; alter the source of stress, avoid the stress, or accept it by building up your resistance.
To Alter Stress: Change the thing that is causing stress. If it is a time crunch, rearrange your schedule; drop some task or errand that isn't crucial. If it is a specific incident or pending event, write it down on a sheet of paper. Be sure that you just write down one thing at a time, and then list some ways you could handle it: Be creative and think of many ways, even the silly or absurd. Then pick one thing from your list, and do it. Taking action will alter and lessen stress-feeling as if your hands are tied will increase stress. For example, you feel a lot of stress after the doctor informs you that an additional treatment is required:
1) Research the treatment; read up on it, and if you have more questions, call and ask the doctor.
2) Talk to your professional coach or counselor about how you feel and what you need to do next.
3) Vow to avoid jumping to conclusions. Instead, wait and see how the treatment turns out.
4) Sing a song or recite a poem to your dog or cat (or yourself) about how you are feeling. Read aloud from a favorite book that you find comforting.
To Avoid Stress: Walk away or leave the setting you find stressful, or avoid it from the start. You may go on a short drive or a trip for a day or more, ask people not to call you, go to a movie, etc. Knowing your limits helps-if something is past your limit, say no. Think of what your limits are for time, energy, money, the ability to remain happy or cheer people up. If you have used all of these resources for the day, week or month, draw the line. You can replenish your vitality by taking a reprieve from having to give to others continually. You can delegate; someone else will make the appointment, pick up the food, and so on.
To Accept Stress by Building Resistance to it: Prepare for any crisis that may occur, by conditioning yourself to accept stress if or when it occurs. Prepare yourself physically, mentally, socially and spiritually.
  • Physically - by eating healthy foods, exercising, proper sleep, & simple relaxation. Just as your body needs exercise, it also needs relaxation.
  • Mentally - by clarifying priorities and goals. Make plans monthly, weekly, daily. Implement plans by writing small tasks in your calendar that reflect your plan. Live by that calendar: If tonight is your dine out club, take your cell phone or give the number where you will be, and go have fun. If you planned to enroll this semester at school, keep your plan. Your calendar is your foundation for mental health. Since you have a life, as reflected in your calendar, disappointing or stressful events will affect you, but not nearly as much as if you had no life of your own. The calendar points your way to the future that you have chosen.
  • Socially - by asking for support from extended family, friends, your community and social groups to which you belong.
  • Spiritually - by prayer, fellowship, meditation.
Remember, stress is not reality. Stress is how your mind reacts to the reality around it. For instance, when you receive a message from the doctor asking you to call, your automatic response may be stress, but you can pause-choose to remain neutral, and check back with the doctor. If the news is disappointing, you can once again become stressed or listen to your Higher Power-realize that stress will make it worse for all concerned. The news is beyond your control-but how you react to the news is absolutely within your control.

The Harmful Effects of Stress to Health

By Quinn Lambert
No matter where you go, you will likely find people who feel that they are under too much stress as a result of the pace of modern-day life. Our days seem to blur together, and we feel that we have no time to sit down and think about things.
This burden of stress is actually quite harmful to our overall health. Being under too much stress can lead to a host of health problems, including heart disease and hypertension.
To reduce this stress and the health risks that it imposes, we should learn to relax in the face of stress rather than be intimidated by it. Relaxation is an important aspect of both mental and physical health.
It doesn't seem that we'll ever get away from stress completely. Some people have actually learned to accept their stress and channel it into more positive outlets. Stress can actually be a great motivator for us to continue working at improving our own lives.
Of course, most people haven't learned to deal with their stress this effectively. It simply builds and builds until they're frustrated by their perceived inability to control it. Similarly, these kinds of people generally prefer to take the easy route, preferring to have things handed to them rather than rising to meet a challenge and enjoying the reward.
I firmly believe that stress can actually be used in a positive way by inspiring us to improve our lives and ourselves. It serves as a motivator by reminding us that we can't just take it easy; we have to continue working towards our goals.
Remember that heavy stress still poses health risks. We cannot take the stress out our lives permanently, so we should try to discover ways to face it.
We all face stress from many different sources. Instead of running from our stress, we should attempt to make the best of it.
Sleeping reduces stress too, a microbead pillow can help you achieve a better sleep. Get yours at http://microbeadpillow.net.

Female Depression, Dress Stress and Male Suicide

By Mike Bond

Although women contract major, or clinical, depression at about the ratio of 2:1 compared to men, there are a considerable number of signs and symptoms of the illness that are the same for both sexes.
The most prevalent of these, certainly to start with, is difficulty concentrating, leading to an unnatural tiredness and fatigue, which in turn develops into a complete loss of interest in all hobbies and pastimes and other things you used to enjoy doing.
Feelings of worthlessness, helplessness and pessimism go hand in hand with these other symptoms. I always think that the main indicator, the real flashing red light, is when you lose interest in hobbies. Once this happens, if you haven't already seen a doctor, now you must.
If this is your first bout with depression, then obviously go to your own doctor, tell him your symptoms and that you really feel you should see a psychiatrist.
These days, thank goodness, doctors are considerably more sympathetic to mental conditions than they were fifty years ago. In those old days, you were thrown a few pills, told you just had 'nerves,' and that was it.
If it's clinical, or major, depression, you may well be confined to hospital in a psychiatric ward. After two weeks, if you still find you have physical pain, be very sure you let the psychiatrist know. There may be something else wrong with you, especially if you're still having pains in the chest.
If left untreated, depression can worsen and may conceivably lead to thoughts of suicide.
Men are far more at risk in this respect than women, despite the fact, as we've noted, that women contract this illness far more than men.
The highest suicide rates are in men over 75 years of age. They die from suicide at a ratio of 4.5:1 over women.
However, the really troubling statistic is that suicide claims the lives of both male and female in the 15-24 year age range and is the third leading killer in this group.
Men and women suffer different forms of stress which can lead to depression. Men become concerned with their jobs and their finances more than women, but again a woman who's a single parent especially, can become very stressed over her financial situation.
Another factor that I think men find difficult to understand, is the tremendous strain beneath which women labour, always to look their best.
It's a never-ending source of wonder to me how a young woman makes every effort to dress in nice clothes, (we may object to the fashions, but as far as they're concerned, fashion is everything!). They take endless care over their make-up and proudly introduce their boy friend to their parents.
Does the boy wear a suit? No, not usually. He's far more likely to appear as if he's just been dragged from a pond. His jeans might have cost him, (or his parents) $100, but for some quite unaccountable reason, they have rips and holes all over them.
The girl later tells her parents that this is absolutely 'de rigueur.' He's the very epitome of male fashion.
When the girl grows into adulthood, the pressures are even greater. Her appearance at the office must be flawless, especially as she climbs the corporate ladder, and if she's married, then her husband expects her to be his own, personal vamp. Men don't have this pressure.
After all, their wives look after their clothes, too!
Carolyn Vale, who assures us she's past the stage of fashion! Read a lot more about depression and other mental conditions on her Website at Panattack. You'll find a lot of audio and video to click onto as well.

Do Not Let Stress Kill You - Importance of Handling Them Effectively

By Greg Correll
Having a little stress in life will give you that extra push you need when it comes to getting things done. The problem with that is, how much stress do you really need? Not only excess stress can trigger anxiety, depression and affects your mental health negatively, it can also affect our physical health as well! This article will talk about the physiology of stress and why you should handle them effectively before they kill you.
On top of the negative mental health effects, here are some ways stress is killing our body:
Firstly, we experience the fight or flight mode, a change in the state and physio of our body that includes several different hormones and chemicals being released into our body such as adrenaline and endorphins. Heart rate will go up together with your blood pressure and blood flow can slow down for several part of our organs. This mechanism is in place to gives us the sudden burst of energy for survival, one that is necessary back in the past.
Once our perceived threat is over, the body will start to repair any tissue that was damaged during the stress stage, this is called stress resistance. Although not in the fight or flight mode anymore, our body is still somewhat on alert mode, normal function of the body will begin again.
The last physiological change to our body is stress exhaustion, this is where it can be potentially harmful to our body, especially the more we go through it. The immune system now will be suppressed, because of the overabundance of chemicals in our body, and thus causing our cardiovascular system to suffer.
This is also why stress is often linked to cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease, stroke or high blood pressure. The changes stress brings to our body can often leads to formation of stomach ulcers, falling sick regularly due to a weakened immune system, as well as a change in our eating habits.
Other notable ways it can affects our body are headaches and body aches, it can also alter your sleeping pattern altogether. On top of that, a drop in sexual desire and performance are also commonly reported and linked to stress.
The worst part about having excess stress in our life is that it often escalates our current health complication, especially complication that involves our nervous system. Escalation of chronic pain, bowel disorders and digestive problems are not uncommon when someone with the condition undergoes a stressful period.
Handling stress can indeed be a life saver, because there is no real way to avoid stress altogether, therefore one needs to learn how to disperse them effectively before it severely alters your health and your mental health!

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

It has only been a few years since the DVA, military departments, and the criminal justice system have begun to understand the significance of delayed stress in the lives of many veterans. It is undisputed that creative treatment could rehabilitate tens of thousands of veterans, particularly those with bad discharges and criminal convictions. Many veterans languish in jails convicted and sentenced by courts that were never informed of the true psychiatric picture of the offender. The resources of the government should be used to inventory these cases.

An inquiry into the role PTSD and substance abuse may have played in a persons criminal acts are not an attempt to escape from responsibility; this inquiry is a reasonable examination into treatment and prevention of future antisocial acts.

The DVA handling of PTSD and substance-abuse compensation claims, while improving, still reflects part of the traditional attitude that such conditions only occur to those who were "predisposed." Partially, as a result, the process merely becomes a search for an objective stressor.

The DVA still sometimes very narrowly interprets whether a veteran was prevented from using educational benefits for purposes of extending a delimiting date. A very traditional view of medically disabling conditions is used. PTSD and often attendant substance abuse problems are usually not considered as medically disabling.

Resolved, That:

Vietnam Veterans of America urges that:

1. The DVA establish a diagnostic and forensic unit or have available referral resources, which, upon request from a veteran or his/her counsel, will provide an evaluation of the role, if any, PTSD may have played in a criminal act. This requirement should apply at all stages of a criminal proceeding - even at the parole or other post conviction relief stage. The federal government should take the lead in establishing a program to assist the states in screening its incarcerated veteran population for legitimate PTSD cases for purposes of treatment and sentence and/or parole reevaluation and assist in the education of law enforcement personnel who make the initial decisions concerning a veteran arrestee.

2. The DVA act and seek legislation, if necessary, to extend the Vet Center outreach activities to incarcerated veterans. Adequate funding should be provided to meet this mandate.

3. The Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) act decisively to revise all directives and regulations which guide the rating board's adjudication of PTSD claims. Too much emphasis is placed on combat and the objective proof of a stressor. As a result, the wrong claims may be granted purely after finding evidence of combat service, and proper claims are often denied for failure to conduct an in depth inquiry into the true nature of the stressor. The DVA should be obligated to conduct the often necessary unit records search to augment frequently incomplete military personnel records. Additionally, DVA Central Office policy should be changed and enforced requiring the use of current mental health standards regarding diagnosis of PTSD as set forth in the current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, as published by the American Psychiatric Association.

4. The DVA amend its regulations specifically to recognize that a delimiting date for educational benefits can be extended if it can reasonably be shown that the veteran could not take meaningful advantage of these benefits because of PTSD, even if drugs, alcohol, and/or incarceration were part of the symptoms.
Financial Impact Statement: In accordance with motion 8 passed at VVA January 2002 National Board of Directors meeting which charges this committee with the reviewing its relevant Resolutions and determining an expenditure estimate required to implement the Resolution, presented for consideration at the 2005 National Convention; this committee submits that implementation of the foregoing Resolution shall be at no cost to National except where staff time may be required for legislative action.

The fact of the matter is that various skin conditions such as acne, eczema, hives, rosacea, psoriasis, alopecia, vitiligo, are, in fact, caused by stress. In fact, this connection between the brain and the skin is so powerful that experts have begun to label the phenomenon as “psychodermatology.”

Stress & Diabetes: Get To Know Yourself A Little Better

Is there a relationship between stress and diabetes? Does stress affect a person with diabetes in a negative way that might contribute to further complications or symptoms?

Researchers have not yet determined if there is an exact connection between stress and the development of complications that arise from diabetes. However, with a little research and some common sense, it is pretty sensible to assume that the less stress that a person has then the healthier that person will be. And this is especially true if you have diabetes.

The good news is that you do not have to wait for scientists to tell you that answer. You can use your own self as a testing ground to determine how stress affects your diabetes. This is probably more important than any other group study that can be had because every individual has different ways of handling stress.

You can start by taking note of stressful situations or any distressing news that you experience. Write down your results and how you relate to these situations. Ask yourself the following questions in order to help determine just how stress is affecting your diabetes:

1. Is there any affect on your blood sugar levels after experiencing a stressful situation? If there is an affect, make note whether your blood sugar levels increased or decreased.

2. Did you notice any difference between shorter, more intense stressful situations, as opposed to longer, more drawn out stressful experiences? Did you experience a negative situation that lasted for days or even weeks? If so, then what difference did it make in your overall energy as well as your blood glucose levels?

3. If you undergo a moment of anger or being upset at somebody, test your blood glucose levels. It's important to also record your blood glucose levels once you have the experience of letting that anger go. Did your levels go back to normal or did they increase? In other words, by resolving a stressful situation with another person, did this cause any improvement in your levels?

4. Does your progress and treatment become sidetracked as a result of the way you try to cope with stress? In other words, do you resort to self gratification in order to make yourself feel better, such as drinking, smoking, or eating too much? And if so, than how did this behavior sidetrack your treatments, if at all?

Sometimes the best offense against diabetes is a good defense. Click here to discover the truth about diabetes.

Is Money Causing Stress In Your Marriage?

Many couples find that finances are a prime source of friction. And, like most couples, you may never really discuss with one another the financial facts of your life. How do you feel about money? How does your spouse feel about money? What's a financial necessity and what is a luxury? How should money be handled and who should handle what? What are you and your wife/husband's long term financial goals? If most couples would take the time to get close and discuss money like this, they would have discovered that although they may have different ideas about saving and spending, perhaps they could have resolved these differences before they became too divisive.

If relationships that go down the tubes due to money stress are like yours, then take the time to sit together with bank statements, pencil, paper, calculator and draw up a workable budget that you can stick to. You may have to spend a few weeks jotting down what you each spend during the day so you can see where every penny goes. Most of us are aware of the beg expenses, but it's the smaller ones (dry cleaning, drugstore items, food) that slip by but add up. Write down your fixed costs: rent, mortgage payments, child-care expenses, insurance. Then include costs that are more flexible: entertainment, clothing, food, and so on. What can you cut out or cut back?

If you have made a realistic budget, you should be able to put aside money for savings every month as well as have money for emergencies. Determine who is going to handle which payments and be sure to put some money into a personal spending account for each of you so you aren't obligated to consult each other on every minor expense. However, always discuss significant purchases or investments. Revise your budget and investment plans if your family or job situation changes.

When discussing money, try to be business-like, not emotional. Avoid blaming and labeling – calling your spouse a tightwad or saying he spends money like a drunken sailor, for instance, is not conducive to cooperation.

Most important, no matter how tight money is, reserve a small amount for pleasure. Even if you go out once a week to a movie or for pizza, just the two of you, you'll feel better about your relationship in general if you indulge yourselves once and a while.

Take the Stress Out of Bookkeeping

by VISH KS

A thorough understanding about the bookkeeping aspects can help one steer clear of so many headaches related to business financials. If one does not have a clear awareness about the financial side of the business, one may not know what to look for while hiring bookkeepers. This can result in all sorts of unpleasant consequences including incorrect financial records, missed or inaccurate filings of mandatory taxes, forms and bill payments, and the possibility of fraud and embezzlement in the company. By following some tips, business owners can stay out of all kinds of bookkeeping troubles. Firstly, be aware of the fact that a good understanding regarding the number side of a business is critical in the quest for a highly successful and efficiently running business. You might want to hire some bookkeepers to carry out the work, but you still ought to possess at least a basic understanding of the financial aspects in order to run the business in a smooth manner.

Again, you should know the difference between hiring a qualified bookkeeper and hiring a professional well versed in financial accounting. Good bookkeepers would have sufficient knowledge and talent to make accurate entries of information related to payables and receivables, payroll processing and reconciliation of checking accounts. All these are considered very important and necessary; tasks that need great attention to detail. These jobs are called tasks as bookkeepers are deemed task-oriented people. True professional finance personnel also can perform these tasks. But, their real value lies in tabulating the information available and translating it into reports that ooze knowledge about the financial aspects of your business and then communicating it in a way anyone can comprehend and understand. Finance managers would be analytical in nature and, in all possibility, could be knowledge oriented people.
One may find individuals or bookkeepers who have the ability to perform well, but people like that are few to come across. Looking at it from another angle, it would prove to be more cost effective to hire a competent bookkeeper to carry out the task oriented part of the financial jobs like entering vendor as well as customer invoices, receiving and making payments, processing the payroll and the like. They may then utilise the services of a finance manager to help them understand what the different figures and numbers mean, and their implications on the various business aspects.
In general, one can gain the information one needs by hiring some bookkeepers or a qualified CPA to manage one’s financials, at least once a month. The finance personnel will generate analysis reports so that you will have a better understanding about the trends that have come into play and the operating efficiency of the company. Bookkeepers can also give valuable advice on how to improve the status of your business. But, make sure that the one you select is someone who can understand the nuances of managing the cash flow and other transactions. This is due to the fact that it is a critical challenge for all kinds of business owners to keep the financial operations running efficiently and free of errors.

Is Everyday Stress Making You Underperform?

Every day seems the same.

You never seem to have enough time to relax and take time for yourself. If it’s not the kids and their hectic schedules, it’s the pressures of work. Are you constantly striving to balance your domestic responsibilities with the high demands of the work place?

Sometimes you are irritable and restless thinking about those unpaid bills, the kids needs, your partner's needs, and the demands of your boss.
If your answer is yes, you have something in common with nearly half of all Americans today--stress.
What is Stress?
Stress is a combination of psychological, physiological, and behavioral reactions that we experience in response to events that seem to threaten or challenge us. As defined by the famous stress researcher Hans Selye, “Stress is the non-specific response of the body to any demand made upon it.” These demands may be physical or emotional in nature and the perceived threat/challenge can be real or imagined. However, it is the perception of threat that triggers the response.
During a stress response, the body experiences increased levels of cortisol, adrenalin and other hormones that produce an increased heart rate, quickened breathing rate, and higher blood pressure. Blood is shunted from the extremities to the large muscles, preparing the body to fight or flee. This is also known as the fight-or-flight response.
The stress-response system is self-regulating. It decreases hormone levels and enables your body to return to normal once a crisis has passed. However, due to our hectic lifestyles, many of the stressful circumstances tend to be prolonged. As a result, you may be on the fight-or-flight reaction longer than is necessary. During this time, you may often end up feeling overwhelmed, tense, and frustrated. What is good for your body during a short-term crisis could be quite harmful over long periods. This long-term activation of the stress-response system can disrupt most of your body's processes, and may lead to other long-term complications.
What Causes Stress ?

Leading Causes/Sources of Stress:
  • Money
  • Work
  • Family
  • Health problems affecting family and friends
  • An individual's own health concerns
  • State of the world today
  • Health problems affecting family (parents, spouse, partner, children, or others)
  • Children

Stress may be linked to external factors such as:
  • Unpredictable events
  • The environment in which you live or work
  • Work itself
  • Family

Stress can also be a result your own:
  • Irresponsible behavior
  • Poor health habits
  • Negative attitudes and feelings
  • Unrealistic expectations
  • Procrastination

How does one recognize stress?
It's not always easy to recognize stress, especially when you are experiencing the symptoms of stress as part of your daily life. Reportedly, women and men exhibit stress differently. While women confess feelings of nervousness, lack of energy, or wanting to cry, men talk about trouble sleeping, or feeling irritable and angry.
The most common symptoms of stress are:
Emotional:
Worry, anger, irritability, anxiety, frustration, and impatience
Physical: Fatigue, headache, back pain, jaw pain, trembling, cold hands and feet, and muscular stiffness.
Digestive: Heartburn, diarrhea, constipation, flatulence, and fullness.
Vital sign: Rise in blood pressure; rapid heartbeat.
Mental: Confusion, inability to concentrate, indecisiveness, nervousness, occasional sleep problems, and blankness.
How can stress affect you?
Stress affects performance of daily duties and responsibilities, resulting in negative lifestyle changes including relationship challenges, career dissatisfaction, deteriorating health, complacency, and substance abuse. It not only steals vitality, health, and energy, but also undermines our ability to perform at our best.

If the cause of your stress is temporary, the physical and psychological effects of stress are usually short-term as well. Normally, our bodies rest when stressful events cease and life gets back to normal. However, stress becomes dangerous when it interferes with the ability to live a normal life for an extended period of time.

Recent studies suggest that stress and anxiety contribute to a majority of illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, dyslipidemia, obesity, lung ailments, allergies, sexual problems, cancer, and psychological disorders.

In some cases, stress may result in short term memory loss, poor mental ability, lack of focus, poor concentration, poor judgment, difficulty making decisions, and depression.
Further, stress has been reported to affect the vitality and reproductive systems in both males and females, and is linked to some of the leading causes of death.

2 Ancient Methods Combined Together Make A Modern 2 Minute Stress Relief Technique

When Christopher Columbus arrived in the new world and landed on his rowboat...the natives could not see his ship out at sea! Their familiarity with their environment and the ocean in particular was such that they couldn't perceive the ship (something they had never even imagined before). An elder medicine man that had the flexibility of perception had to describe the ship to his fellow tribesmen before they could see it.This same familiarity applies to how we perceive our breathing. To the ancient Indian system of Yoga, breathing is considered to be so important that before any task a yogi first prepares his/her breathing. Proper breath control is considered the key to healthy living. In fact, learning to do proper diaphragmatic breathing has been proven to reduce stress and anxiety permanently. Our breathing is something that we have become so familiar with that we are almost completely unaware of its effects. Consider this, our breath bridges our conscious and unconscious i.e. unconsciously we are always breathing and at any time we can consciously focus on our breathing. This is important to remember because all our emotional states are reflected in our breathing. If we are stressed our breathing tends to be shallow and focused in our upper lungs. In fact jerky breathing itself will actually increase anxiety and stress. While when we are relaxed we tend to breathe fully into our belly. Knowing this you can observe yourself and know when its time to consciously take control of your breathing to control your stress.Practicing belly breathing (diaphragmatic breathing) can be extremely beneficial and can be done anytime. Just follow this simple method...Sit or stand with your back straight, put your hand on your belly and breath in a slow and deep pattern. Don't try to overfill the lungs or empty them - just breath softly but fully - expanding your belly on the inhale and contracting on the exhale. Keep your attention focused on your breathing. You will find that your mind will tend to drift. That is normal. Simply return your attention to your breath when you notice you got distracted. Allow the relaxation from this breathing pattern to spread through your body and just enjoy yourself. This next one may come as a surprise to you...stress can cause the blood to drain from your forehead! This seriously diminishes your thinking ability. This is a natural biological response to remove blood from your brain to your body so you can fight or run (the famous fight or flee mechanism). This is perfectly fine for when we roamed the plains but in modern day living we don't need to fight at work or run away from it. We have to learn to not only cope but to excel. Fortunately there are two points on your forehead, that in the ancient Chinese system of Acupuncture are called the 'neuro-vasculars'. If you hold these points lightly, with a little deep breathing, they will bring the blood back into your brain! These points are located about one inch above the center of your eyebrows. To make sure you got it, put the palm of your right hand on your right sight of your forehead so that the 'ball' of your forehead is in the center of your palm. Same for the left side. Breathe deeply while holding lightly. The 2-minute stress relief technique is simple. When you feel stressed, angry, nervous, under pressure etc. Sit down with your back straight and feet flat on the floor. Hold your neuro-vascular points while doing diaphragmatic breathing. In 2 minutes, you will feel more relaxed and clear headed.
