Debts Can Seriously Damage Your Health

by Max Renwick

A recent report in The Daily Telegraph highlighted how anxious people can become when worrying about debts.  It also shows just how many of us are so concerned about debts that we end up having to go to the doctor.

The survey found that around seven per cent of people   equivalent to almost three million adults across the UK had problems with debt or disputed bills.  Of these, 21 per cent said they had suffered stress related ill health as a consequence. Among those whose debts caused ill health, 22 per cent saw their GP, costing the NHS an average of 125GBP per patient.

In all, the findings suggest that around 130,000 people nationwide have seen their GP about stress caused by debt, at a cost to the NHS of 15 to 20 million pounds. Source; The Daily Telegraph

3 million people in the UK with debt problems.
630,000 of us suffering from stress as a result.
138,600 of those ending up at the doctors.

An expert has suggested that these figures could be as much as twice as bad if the survey had included rent or mortgage arrears.

In America, other surveys come to similar conclusions.  You are twice as likely to have a heart attack if you are suffering from debt stress, three times as likely to suffer from migraines and headaches and six times as likely to suffer from severe depression.

When the NHS notices that debts are causing stress related ill health, then there really is a problem.  But it isn't just the medical issue.  Doctors can help treat the health problem but they can't sort out the cause.

Debt doctor

If you're concerned about making repayments on credit cards, store cards, loans or mortgages, you should really take three vital steps as a priority.

1    Take a deep breath and make the decision to get help.
2    Write down a list of all your debts, your ordinary household bills and living costs.
3    Call a responsible debt management company for help, support and advice.

Once you have all your income, outgoings and debt information down on paper, a debt management adviser can start to help you.

There is nothing to be ashamed of.  In fact, like an illness, the sooner you see someone about it, the sooner, you'll start to feel well again.  If it helps, think of it as going to see a 'debt doctor'.  Clearly, if you feel that the burden of debt is causing you stress related ill health, you should also see a GP as soon as possible.

Controlling repayments; Debt Management Plan

A good debt adviser will be able to deal with all your creditors.  It's a complicated process but most people will end up paying down their debts at a rate they can afford.  A responsible debt management solution will leave you debt free in the long run and able to keep up with your ordinary living expenses in the meantime.

Most lenders will understand that it is better for them to get part of the debt back than nothing at all.  Their aim is the same as yours; to see the debt come down.  To help you do this, some lenders will agree not to go on adding interest charges or late payment fees.  Again, a responsible debt management service will be best placed to make this happen for you.

Finding a debt management adviser

Your adviser should not generally recommend an Individual Voluntary Arrangement or bankruptcy.  Their website should not 'hide' behind any organisation that pretends to be a free or impartial debt counselling service, a charity or a government body.

Beware of debt management advisers who charge any fees up front. They should be clear about what they charge and what services they will provide.  They should operate a free phone number to keep costs down for you while they help sort out your debt problems.

The stress debt spiral

Part of the problem with the stress that is caused by debt is that it often makes matters worse; the stress affects many people so badly that they find it hard to tackle the debts.  The pressure can also lead to depression and a general inability to organise their paperwork.  When every morning's post just seems to bring another bill or reminder, many people start making poor money management decision.

The problem worsens and the bills mount up, which in turn creates even more of a problem with debt.  This turns into a downward spiral because, often, people use loans or credit cards to clear ordinary household bills or other debts.  This solves the immediate problem but creates a more expensive debt.

The spiral continues with things like consolidation loans, which may clear existing balances but mean that you begin to run up new debts on top of the old 'consolidated' debts; a much worse situation.

Breaking the cycle

If you feel that any of these problems are familiar, then you should speak to a debt management adviser as soon as possible.  The first step on this path is to recognise that you really do need some expert support, advice and help with your debts.  Once you have admitted to yourself that debt advice would probably make your life easier, you absolutely have to act.

Follow those three steps.
1    Take a deep breath and make the decision to get help.
2    Write down a list of all your debts, your ordinary household bills and living costs.
3    Call a responsible debt management company for help, support and advice.

Debt advisers are there to help you.  All you need to do is call; they take care of the problems for you, leaving you free from the stress of debt.

Your Recommended Daily Allowance for Relaxation

by Brian Jones

Photo: onepennysheet.com

Stress is the curse of living in modern times. Everyone suffers from stress. And the stress we suffer takes a heavy toll on our bodies, emotions and minds.

Feeling stressed out, worn out by fatigue or just simply having a miserable day, the best thing to do is relax.

Watching television may be a form of relaxation for some, but is not a recommended method by experts. When we watch TV we are bombarded with commercials, ads, sounds and images. So how do we achieve relaxation? If there are thousands of ways we can get stressed, one of them is not meeting deadlines, there are also many ways we can relax.

In recent studies, experts have determined that heart disease is linked to anger and irritability is linked to mental stress. Too much stress brings about ischemia that can lead to or cause a heart attack. Relaxation takes on added importance in light of this matter. Managing your anger and attitude is significant to heart health, and relaxation can help you manage stress.

One way of relaxation is transcendental meditation. Recent studies have also shown that this method might reduce artery blockage, which is a major cause for heart attack and stroke. People practice transcendental meditation by repeating uttering soothing sounds while meditating, this is to achieve total relaxation. The researchers found that practitioners of transcendental meditation significantly reduced the thickness of their arterial wall compared with those who didn't practice transcendental meditation.

Another study on another method of relaxation, acupuncture, seems to reduce high blood pressure by initiating several body functions for the brain to release chemical compounds known as endorphins. Endorphin helps to relax muscles, ease panic, decrease pain, and reduce anxiety.

Yoga is also another method for relaxation and may also have similar effects like acupuncture. In another study, participants were subjected to several minutes of mental stress. Then they were subjected to various relaxation techniques, such as listening to nature sounds or classical music. Only those who did Yoga significantly reduced the time it took for their blood pressures to go back to normal. Yoga is a form of progressive relaxation.

Breathing is one of the easiest methods to relax. Breathing influences almost all aspects of us, it affects our mind, our moods and our body. Simply focus on your breathing, after some time you can feel its effects right away.

There are several breathing techniques that can help you reduce stress.

Another easy way to achieve relaxation is exercise. If you feel irritated a simple half-hour of exercise will often settle things down. Although exercise is a great way to lose weight, it does not show you how to manage stress appropriately. Exercise should also be used in conjunction with other exercise method.

One great way of relaxation is getting a massage. To gain full relaxation, you need to totally surrender to the handling and touch of a professional therapist.

There are several types of massages that also give different levels of relaxation.

Another method of relaxation is Biofeedback. The usual biofeedback-training program includes a 10-hour sessions that is often spaced one week apart.

Hypnosis is one controversial relaxation technique. It is a good alternative for people who think that they have no idea what it feels like to be relaxed. It is also a good alternative for people with stress related health problems.

Drugs are extreme alternatives to relaxation. They are sometimes not safe and are not effective like the other relaxation methods. This method is only used by trained medical professionals on their patients.

These relaxation techniques are just some of the ways you can achieve relaxation.  Another reason why we need to relax, aside from lowering blood pressure in people and decreasing the chances of a stroke or a heart attack, is because stress produces hormones that suppress the immune system, relaxation gives the immune system time to recover and in doing so function more efficiently.

Relaxation lowers the activities within the brains' limbic system; this is the emotional center of our brain.

Furthermore, the brain has a periodic need for a more pronounced activity on the right-hemisphere. Relaxation is one way of achieving this.

Relaxation can really be of good use once a relaxation technique is regularly built into your lifestyle. Choose a technique that you believe you can do regularly.

The Lies Anger Tells Us - anger management

by aimantaurus

Photo: pistolpete.wordpress.com

Anger tells us many lies. One common lie is that once we are angry, there is little we can do to stop feeling that way, we must act it out. Like a person overcome by alcohol when we become drunk with anger we feel as though it has us in its grip. Nothing can be further from the truth. We always have a choice about how to handle the feelings that arise. One by one we will now turn around some of the lies anger tells and gain true control.

Anger Is A Choice We Make

Believe it or not, anger is a choice we make. We feel justified in being angry, and this justification stokes the flames and keeps the problems alive. Once this justification sets in, we basically choose to hold onto our anger until we can get revenge.

Now, here is a lie anger tells frequently. It leads us to believe that revenge is sweet and once we get it, we'll feel good and things will be in harmony. Actually the opposite happens. Revenge does not hurt the person we are angry with. Our wish for revenge, our rage, lives inside us and poisons our own lives in many ways.

Dr. Deepak Chopra has said "The most common and direct cause of illness is anger." It is toxic for us and this toxin spreads to all aspects of our body and minds. Some of the effects of this wish for revenge include illness, high blood pressure, heart attacks, aging, lack of love, continual irritation and is the fuel for the number one illness in our nation depression.

In order to choose out of anger, in order to take specific steps that will stop anger on the spot we must first truly realize the terrible toll anger takes upon us. Rather than feel we have a right to be angry, that revenge is sweet or that our anger is making us powerful and strong, we must face the fact that this anger we are harboring is destroying our own happiness, health, clarity, peace, relationships, creativity, happiness and overall well being. The best gift you can give yourself is to let go of anger, one kind each day.

Another lie anger tells is that when you are angry you are filled with power and strength. However, the rush an individual gets from anger is counterfeit, a substitute for real strength. After the anger passes, and the consequences of the anger set in, the person usually feels weak and depleted. Often there is considerable regret for words spoken or action taken rashly.

Real strength includes the ability to refuse the false rush anger brings us, to have the power to see the entire situation for what it really is and respond with clarity and compassion. This is seldom an outcome that anger brings. It is the anger itself that keeps a person out of control. It clouds their judgments, creates enemies where friends used to be, and generally keeps the person who holds it in a prison without bars.

Another lie anger tells is that the angry person is definitely right and everyone else is wrong. A false sense of decisiveness is created. It becomes easier to take action (though the action is almost always off base). When anger subsides a person can see the larger picture and has available many ways of handling a situation that they do not have when under they are filled with rage. Suspiciousness and paranoia, which arise during, anger, and may well be unfounded, recede.

Focus on the Solutions, Not the Problems

 by supriyo

Photo: synergysuccessstrategies.com.au

It is truly empowering to expand your focus beyond the problems to the small things you do that tend to make things better in your life.
When You Focus on the Solution, You Become Expert in What Works:
When you focus on the problems, you become an expert on your ineffectiveness and unhappiness. Focus on what isn't working creates discouragement and undermines your confidence and self-esteem. When you switch your focus to your small successes, you become an expert on the choices you make that can improve your life.
Think Small:
True lasting change occurs in tiny increments practiced over time until they become new habits. Slightly larger successes build on previous wins. Gradually, winning habits of thought and behavior get established and become the new norm. Life is made of little things. You make thousands of choices throughout the day - choices about how you act or react, choices about how you think or view the circumstances of your life. Most of us are not aware of the choices we make. We just act.
How to Become an Expert on the Solutions:
First identify problem areas in your life that you'd like to change:
• It drives you crazy when your spouse does those same things you've been complaining about for years.
• You'd like to shed a few pounds.
• Sometimes you're late paying your bills because they get lost in those mountains of mail on your dining room table.
The first step toward becoming an expert on the solutions is becoming curious about alternative choices you may never have considered before. Consider what you might do differently to impact on these situations.

Lasting transformation occurs through the aggregate of these small actions repeated over time. By focusing on the solutions - choices you can make to improve the situation - rather than getting stuck on what isn't working in your life, you bring about lasting positive change.
By the third or fourth session, my clients become expert at answering the ‘different and better' question.

Strengths And Weaknesses Are To Make You Realize Your Full Potential

 by fyness

Photo: job-finderz.com

We all have our strengths and weaknesses but did you know that the average person has a little over 300 capabilities? Research has proved that most people never live to discover their full potential. Within you there is an immense potential that can propel you towards unimaginable heights. Therefore, nothing but you stands in your path of reaching your destiny in life.

From a personal point of view, I believe that the number of flaws of an average person do not come anywhere close to 300. Given the margin, no one should not grumble about their faults or give excuses for every failure. In any case, your strengths and weaknesses should complement each other. People are gifted differently and individuals should strive to understand themselves better so as to be self-assured.

On the other hand, having a disability should not mean the end of the world. Since you can do nothing about your inabilities, do not waste your time thinking about them. Rather, find ways to strike a balance between your strengths and weaknesses. Do what you can do in the best way possible and you will find joy and comfort in life.

You should also know that everyone has shortcomings only that they hide them. People who have ignored their disabilities and embraced their strengths and weaknesses are today living positively. This is necessary if one is to succeed in life. Hence it is critical to always remember that champions come back with no excuses but they come back victorious.

After all, it is merely a matter of approach and insight. Some people remember the good part of the day while others choose to remember the hard and bad part. Do you see a half glass of water as half full or half empty? Well, it depends on the way you choose to see things.

How Personal Set Goals Assist You To Excel In Life

 by fyness

Photo: oystercove.wordpress.com

Living a good life is about your personal set goals and not how much money you have in the bank. It means being happy and having a purpose, completing your role in life in the best way possible. When your importance is felt, then it becomes automatic that your life will have significance and meaning. This is a contrast to someone whose death leaves the society with no regrets. Your contribution to society should therefore be irreplaceable.

As you relate with others, your desire and ambition should be to offer solutions to society by exploiting your full potential. In order to achieve this, you should be able to manage your time properly and be fully committed to your personal set goals in life. Therefore, this means having goals is vital; for without a vision, no mission can be accomplished.

Your personal set goals should be properly defined and achievable. Goals are set to provide guidance and relevance thus should be easily understood. They must provide for a clear path of action that leaves no chance to ambiguity or misdirection. Poorly planned goals may lead to losing focus and thus shifting attention hence time loss.

Also, your personal set goals should be prioritized well. Failure to do so will mean that you will find yourself pursuing exploits of lesser importance. Prioritizing helps you gain focus on things that need more attention hence avoiding wasting time on lesser issues. In addition, personal set goals bring in an aspect of being rational and having a realistic approach.

The question as to how to excel in life really is not a hard one. Just know what you want, create a time frame and ensure that you have the right resources. Then take action since you hold the key to your desired destiny. Being systematic is the secret to fulfill your mission on this earth.

How to Manage Panic Attacks Intelligently

 by John Cielo

Photo: ncpamd.com

What are panic attacks exactly? Many people talk about such things, but unless you've actually suffered one, they're really hard to describe.

First, here are some of the most common symptoms of a panic attack: dizziness, nausea, tightness in chest and or throat, tingling fingers, hot / cold flashes, racing heart, irregular heartbeat, lightheadedness, a feeling of being 'detached' from reality, and a feeling of impending doom. Really terrifying, right!

O.K. but why do these symptoms occur? In other words, why do some people get panic attacks? Usually, someone who suffers panic attacks already has much higher-than-normal (for them) levels of anxiety. Putting aside why this might be, the result of having elevated anxiety levels is that just one stressful event (e.g. being stuck in an elevator, sitting an exam, etc.) can then push your overall anxiety levels way over the top.

Your body (mis)reads this as you being in a dangerous position and so triggers its primeval 'fight or flight' response to help you fight the 'danger' or run away from it. It therefore triggers important chemical and other changes in your body to give you the best chance of survival. These changes are responsible for the symptoms you experience during a panic attack.

So how do you successfully manage panic attacks? The key is to be aware of as many facts about panic attacks as you can. And you've already made a great start just by reading thus far! You now know what the symptoms are and what causes your attacks.

Next, you need to understand that panic attacks cannot harm you and they certainly cannot kill you. This is a medical fact. But even by understanding why they are caused, you can see that they are just symptoms that occur as a result of a perceived threat that isn't there in reality.

Now, armed with this knowledge, you are in a much better position to manage a panic attack. For example, at the first signs of one coming on, you can act more positively knowing that these symptoms cannot harm you. Even repeat that in your head at those first signs: "I know what this is and I know it can't harm me." This can help lessen the severity and shorten the length of your attack.

One of the most horrible symptoms is the rapid heartbeat and shallow, short breathing pattern. If this is allowed to continue your oxygen / carbon dioxide balance gets upset, and the result is even worse. Get back to more relaxed, controlled deeper breathing, in through the nose and out through your mouth.

At the same time, to prevent yourself from analysing your symptoms and making matters worse, focus outwardly on buildings, trees, cars, people, anything to take attention away from your symptoms. This can help against that horrible 'being detached from reality' feeling.

These are positive, intelligent steps you can take to manage panic attacks successfully. They won't prevent them, but they will help shorten their length and intensity by 'managing' the situation more positively. What you really need to do, to eliminate them completely, is to break out of your 'vicious cycle of anxiety.'

So, next, to discover the simple 'ONE MOVE' technique that will eliminate your fear factor and so break your vicious cycle of anxiety, please go here now http://eliminatepanicattacks.blogspot.com and get your old self back again.
