Want To Be An Inventor? You Probably Are One

By: Rick London

Photo: inventorsdigest.com

Ever wonder about the "great mystique" of being an inventor? It boggles some of our imaginations.
What if I told you you already are one. Let's say you are making bacon and eggs and a biscuit for
breakfast in the morning. People have been eating this combination for years both at home and
in restaurants. One day, someone put them all together, added a slice of "cheese product" and presto, this employee of McDonald's got a raise. He had "invented" the Egg McMuffin.

It even had a cute name. At the time, Ed McMahon was the co-host of the tonight show and this made the name of it both clever and even easier to remember.

Many think that to be an inventor, one has to have a specific degree, understand how physics and
science works, etc. The truth is, there truly isn't anything new in the world, especially in the world of invention. There are the occasional enigmas like the slinky, the pet rock, the hula hoop, etc., but they are few and far between.

Most inventions are simply improvements or variations, upon others. When I was a student in
Dallas, I worked at Neiman Marcus where Pet Rocks were sold, and we sold a lot of them. Ten years
later, I received a design patent on a product called "Pet Presidents". They were presidential puppets, each with a sculpted head of a famous president and each had a unique container in which it "lived" plus a care and feeding package.

For instance Carter came in a peanut, Nixon in a tape recorder, etc. I was new and wet behind the ears in the world of inventing. I found "an angel" who gave me $10,000, which was a lot of money then, and to take the prototypes around to various toy companies around the country to try to get them manufactured. It was not to be. Mattel, Kenner, and all the others said they would have to change an entire assembly line to make it work.

I went home in disgust. That was 1980. A close friend of mine, Patrick Weathers was then a featured performer and writer
for Saturday Night Live. We later became roommates in New York but before then, I sent him the Ronald Reagan Pet President (they were in puppet form..."real political puppets). He liked it, as did Eddie Murphy. Eddie used it during his debut performance in a sketch called "Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood. That was my 15 minutes of fame.

All I had done is taken an old idea and elaborated on it. I was never great in academia, but decided to go back to school in my forties. I invented a device called "Insert Alert". It was an improvement on "Life Alert"; in that it is worn as a watch, it is fully computerized, it monitors vital signs, has a gps tracker to tell any emergency center who the person is, where they are, and what the problem is; even if they are under the ocean. They can even be unconscious and it will auto-dial the nearest 911. Why did I invent it? I had my first heart attack in 2001.

There was no way I could have pressed or even found a Life Alert; I was so disoriented and barely conscious I did my best to breathe. I formed a corporation after the patent, raised funds, but not enough to pay the engineer to build the prototype. We will try again as technology has changed and there are more inexpensive ways to do it.

Organic farming has been around for about eighty years. About two years ago, I discovered a way to bring organic farming into urban areas, including indoor apartments and offices, and patented it. My wife Lee, was the design engineer on the project and made it happen. We became partners and plan to release it later this year. We are both very excited about it.

Your invention, or mine does not need to change the world, but it can. For instance a friend of mine invented "The smart bomb" and has been given more credit for saving our soldiers from "friendly fire" and casualties than any other invention. He is very humble about it. When we used to carpet bomb, before his invention, we took out entire cities in hours. We did not win hearts and minds of any country, and we lost way too many of our own soldiers.

Next time you have a few moments, pull out a coat hanger or a paper clip, or an air freshener, or
anything around the house. How could you change, modify, add, subtract, etc. to make that product
different.

I am also a writer, designer and cartoonist. With my designs, I looked at shoes, Tshirts, mugs etc.
to see how to improve the looks of them. With my cartoons, of which I have about 5000 copyrights, I simply added them and presto, stores were invented.

With Keds, I simply added graphics of famous philosophers on the top panel with their most famous love quote shoes on the side and presto, my love quote shoes were born.

Again, one does not have to be a rocket scientist to be an inventor. I think one of the greatest inventions I have seen lately is the battery operated cigarette which weans people off smokes without the pain of patches or gum and (allegedly) keeps them off. If the first invention, book, creation, artwork, etc. does not suit yours, or others fancy, do not give up.

Thank the Universe for the "failure"...it is hardly a failure by the way. It is proof that you are one step closer to inventing something that will make a difference.

One final word. Never, ever do business with an "invention company". They advertise all over the
place and nearly all are being sued, put out of business, or under investigation. For the best information call or visit the US Trademark and Patent site. If you have the money, also
visit a patent attorney. Both can be very helpful but you do not have to have a patent attorney to
have a patent, or trademark, or copyright. Copyrights may be registered at the U.S. Library Of Congress for about $40 each last time I looked; and you can copyright a whole block of images, etc. for the same price rather than one at a time.

By the way ideas cannot be patented. Sorry. You must be able to render a sketch, or have someone else do it, or have a working model. If you do not yet have a working model/prototype, you may buy a provisional copyright for around $100 which lasts a year, and gives you that much time to build a working prototype at which time you pay for a full patent. The US Trademark & Copyright office will walk you through it.

Don't think inventing is for you? Start a business? Can't afford an office or store? The workscape has changed in the past 3 decades. Whereas people with home offices were once "a joke" today they rule. Nearly 50 million Americans and I do not have the figure or Europeans who work from home, but in America, it is more than those that work in offices and shops. If you start a business, even if one like it has existed before, yours will have your own flavor, your own personality, and you have invented something very meaningful.

Good luck and have fun. Having fun is what it is all about.

Overcoming Barriers to Success, the Solutions

By: Noelyne Jones

Photo: mindforhealth.com

If you are not being as successful in life as you would like then it is time to stop and analyse the situation so that you can overcome the barriers.

Step 1 is to identify the barrier. What is it that is stopping you from being successful? What is the problem? This is the diagnostic stage. You are reviewing what is going well and went wrong? What could be better? Spend time analysing your current situation to understand what is limiting your success. What barriers do you need to overcome?

Step 2 Once you have identified the root of your problem you can decide what to do next to improve the situation. It is best to go back to your original goal at this stage and clarify what it is that you want to achieve. Begin with the end in mind and visualise your self having achieved your goal. What does it look like, sound like and feel like to achieve your goal? What did you have to do to overcome the barriers that you are now facing?

Then ask yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 how much do you really want to achieve this goal? If it is not at 10 then you need to look at what you need to do to be at 10.

Tips for overcoming internal barriers i.e. the ones you place on yourself. These are the easiest to overcome as you are in control of your own thoughts and emotions. Where other people are the perceived barrier then you are not in total control, you can only influence the situation. I look at external barriers to success in another article.

Fear is a major barrier to your success and often treated as a negative emotion and one not to admit to. I encourage you to get curious about the fear and ask what is it telling you. What is not right yet? What do you need to do? By doing this you turn a negative into a positive and so overcome the barrier.

Lack of motivation normally means that your goal is not sufficiently compelling. You do not have a strong enough reason why you want to achieve the goal. Go back to visualising your goal.

Resistance to taking action is linked to fear in that you need to get curious about your reason for feeling hesitant or resistant. What is it telling you?

A lack of certainty or clarity about your direction can mean that the end goal is unclear or you have not worked out the next step. Go back to visualising the goal and wait until it becomes clear and you feel certain about your next step.

A lack of self-belief and confidence can be overcome by personal development. There are a myriad of options available such as self-help books, training courses, one to one coaching and on-line learning programmes.

If you are the sort of person who likes to do everything yourself you need to consider your time management, organisation and prioritisation skills. Trust could also be an issue if you find it hard to delegate tasks. You need to think in terms of the value of your time. Are there some tasks or activities that it would be better to give to someone else so that you can concentrate on the most important tasks?

Making assumptions can get you into hot water particularly if these assumptions are mixed with personal prejudice. Improve your decision making by gathering facts and evidence, doing research as much as possible before making the final decision. Be aware of any prejudices and thoughts that you have about other people that are based on first impressions or incorrect assumptions.

Step 3 Once you have identified the root of the problem and the best solution to improve the situation it is time to act. Decide what you are going to do and when. Then do it!

When you want success enough you will find a way to overcome the barrier either by removing it, getting over or around it.

How to deal with Stress 10 Ideas for you

 By: Brenda Hoddinott

Photo: hubpages.com

1.Take care of your body. Eat some healthy maybe a fruit that is high in antioxidants. Have you ever noticed when you are cranky and you eat something you seem to feel better? Well the same thought applies here. What you take in if it is high in vitamins the vitamins will help your mood, and possibly help you to deal with stress.

2.Give yourself a minute. Take a break, walk away from the situation. By taking your leave, and giving yourself time you can reassess how you actually feel about what is going on. You may be reacting rashly under the pressure. Take a moment to really think about what is the right course of action.

3. Laugh. You have many choices here. You can laugh at how ridiculous or ironic the situation actually is, or how your face looked when you felt stressed. Now many people have phones with Internet on it, down load the joke of the day, some comics you might like, or your favorite comedian. Just find something humorous.

4. Learn some time management techniques. Managing time is one of the biggest instigators of stress in peoples personal lives. Get a planner, do not over-scheduled, learn to say no, do not over commit yourself. Do not procrastinate. Be organized. What do you want to accomplish today? Make your goals and stick to them. Your goal is less stress, let that be the little voice in the back of your mind that motivates you.

5.Think positive. You can do it. Positive thinking is very powerful, and it can change the way you feel about yourself or a situation. Say something positive. Positive self talk is very helpful in this regard. Many cynics bag on positive self talk but really if someone pays you a compliment about what you look like or something you have accomplished do you feel good? Of course! This is really no different. You are just taking charge of your own ability to make yourself feel good, and your stress go away.

6. Listen to your favorite music. And turn it up! Let it move your stressed out mind to another place. Focus on the rhythm, or the peace it is bringing you. It is all about you and the music, NOT the stress you felt.

7. Take a deep breath. As you exhale push all the negative thoughts out of your mind. You can even do a breathing exercise. Breathing exercises are growing in popularity because they are so convenient and effective. These exercises can even be done in two minutes, at your desk, sitting up. Pretty good huh?

8. Say no to being a worry wart. Say no to the negative thought process. Worry fills you with undue anxiety. If you can't change the situation right now it's time to focus on something more productive. Less worry, more living your life.

9. Read a good book, newspaper, favorite website, whatever. Taking 5 to 10 minutes for yourself. It could be the best thing for you in that particular situation. You may feel refresh you so you can return to the situation in a new frame of mind.

10. Shift your view of what is stressful. Refocus your mind. You could look at those stressors as a challenge that you could grow from. Once you overcome one of these challenges (or stressors) you will feel accomplished. Bask in that feeling, you have accomplished something for yourself.

Self-love And Self

 By: Michelle Mayur

Photo: chopra.com

Before we can truly love others we first need to learn to love ourselves unconditionally, which for many people can be the most challenging part of their spiritual growth. We can be so busy "loving" others and "doing" for others that we neglect ourselves. How can we truly allow ourselves to be loved by another if we don’t even know how to love ourselves first? If we don't factor in time in our lives on a daily basis for self-love and self-nurturing we are being hypocritical and not in our integrity. Any "love" we are giving out to others is likely to be tainted with resentment about meeting their needs and not ours or be conditional upon getting something back from that person. Beginning to sound familiar? Probably the vast majority of us can relate to the above. No wonder our hearts have been closing down vibrationally. Unconditional love requires nothing in return - it just is. Unconditional love is what your dog gives you. Owning a pet gives people an opportunity to just naturally open their heart up to unconditional love as they feel the purity of their animal’s love and know it is not manipulative or calculating nor does it have a hidden agenda. An animal does not care how you look, what job you have, how much money you make, what car you drive or the house you live in. I feel animals are far closer spiritually to God than we are. In our materialistic society the majority of people confuse self-love and self-nurturing with amassing physical possessions, such as fancy cars, big houses, lots of clothes, etc. How many people do we know who seem to have all the material things yet are depressed and empty inside. Hollywood is full of them. So-called self-nurturing may also be excessive consumption of alcohol, over-eating junk food, being a couch potato in front of the television, all of which are injurious to our health and do nothing to nourish us at a soul-level, where the real need for nurturing lies. Let’s look at some positive soul-healing ways to nurture and love yourself:

*. Laugh a lot - 10 minutes of laughter in the morning boosts your immune system, increases productivity and gives you a good attitude. Try it in the shower, while exercising or just about any time. Laughter uses every muscle in the body and releases endorphins, the happy hormones. * Enjoy guilt-free downtime - Be sure to build in regular reward breaks of 10-15 minutes after completing a task. That way you don’t need to feel guilty about stopping for a break. Walk outside, put your feet up, read, phone a friend or just do nothing. * Have a warm aromatherapy bath with candles - Add beautiful music, take a good book to read, turn the answering machine on, meditate or whatever you are guided to. Enjoy! *Take yourself to a beautiful place in nature - Walk, sit or just contemplate. *Enjoy good conversations with friends *Hug your pet or your child Now over to YOU. How to Begin Handling Your Self Talk and Feel Great

By: Larry Iverson

Photo: mwchallenge.blogspot.com

What's the best way to be in control of negative thinking and negative self-talk? This is a huge problem for the vast majority of people.

Psychological research at Stanford University has proven that when you criticize or pick on yourself, that negativity has over double the negative impact that criticism from another person has. Self imposed negative thinking can drag you down into despair faster than anything someone else could do.

Inside your head, you are always talking to yourself. I'm sure you've heard the saying, "People who talk to themselves were crazy." Wrong, we all talk to ourselves all the time. As a matter of fact, you have thousands of voices in your head. Your mother, your father, your preachers, your teachers, your friends, your relatives, heroes from fiction, heroes from TV shows and movies, and on and on. You have thousands of voices stored up in your memory bank.

Now, some of those voices are really beneficial, and other ones can get it in your way. The negative self talk needs to be taken care of because if you don't manage those little buggers, they will drag you down.

The reason you get caught up in these negative cycles, these bad thinking patterns, is that they become a habit.

The average neuron size in the human brain is only about one micron in thickness. For those things you do that are habits, your neurons can grow to be between three to six microns in thickness. That's a huge difference!

Just for fun, let's imagine that you get caught up again and again in one of your good friend's dramas. Over and over and over you get caught up in their whirlwind of negative thinking about their problems. You do this day after day, your buttons get pushed and you get angry. Well, what that means is you are training your brain to run this negative response better and better, because you keep commiserating with them day after day.

You begin to take that one neuron pathway, and you are growing it to be this great big three to six neuron thick pattern. You are training your brain to run the anger program better and better. And soon in many areas of your life, it just runs the anger response automatically. You need get a grip and break this negative, preconditioned response pattern you've just built.

So what do you do? How do you begin to change this lousy thinking pattern? First, you have to catch that anger pattern. You have to notice yourself doing it. Most people don't pay attention to their thoughts. You need to catch that pattern of your buttons getting pushed.

After you catch the lousy thinking pattern, you then send your brain in a new direction. Why do you do this? Because by taking the time to really focus your mind in a new direction, again and again and again, that repetition, that practice, will build a new positive pathway. Doing this repeatedly, the old large neuron path of negativity will start to shrink, and the positive neuron pathway will begin to expand. It will transform your life.

Those things that you know well, you know because of repetition. Can you ride a bicycle? If you can, the reason is because you did it over and over until you gained the skills. Can you fry and egg? You probably burned a number of them, but finally through repetition of a correct pattern, you now can fry one without ruining it. Can you write a paper? If so, it's because you did it repeatedly until you finally figured out the process. Can you drive a car? Can you speak in front of people? Can you play a musical instrument? If so, it's because you repeated the correct patterns again and again. This is no different. Those negative thinking patterns create big neurons for negativity, just as effectively as positive patterns do.

What you now is catch your thinking. When you are telling yourself upsetting or negative junk, begin to ask yourself things like "Instead of feeding the anger, I'm now switching to self management thoughts. Instead of blowing up when someone says something rude to me, I'm going to take a deep breath, calm down, and detach. When someone criticizes me or gives me a hard time, instead of feeling bad, or instead of getting angry and defensive, I'm going to remember to quiet myself, watch my thinking and change this pattern."

And so you practice that new pattern and you mentally rehearse over and over and over what you'll do instead of reacting negatively. And then, on the day that the negative event happens, guess what? You will have much more control than you ever did in the past. From your positive thinking practice, your positive focus, this new positive attitude, the neuron begins to grow larger, and the negative neuron begins to shrink.

So whatever you can do to grow that positive pathway by repetition and practice will make your day significantly better. You can do this, moment-to-moment, day-to-day. You can transform your attitude. You can have the kind of life you've desired. Do you want more money? Do you want better relationships? Do you want to feel better? Do you want to have more energy? It all can be yours.

Practice this process and it will help you control your mind and manage your life more effectively. This mental control process will help take you where you want to go.

The Best of Success to You.

When Failure Isn't An Option, You'll Succeed

by Crystal Andrus

Photo: leadershipfreak.wordpress.com

The inspiring story of Thomas Edison and his 10,000 attempts to create the light-bulb should give us the encouragement to never give up. Yes, that"s right!  Edison tried more than 10,000 different ways to make a glass bulb light up, and at least 9,999 times were failures. I bet it was hard for him. I bet there were moments of frustration, hair pulling, and even the odd time he felt like throwing in the towel. But he never did. I"m sure he had to continually rework his plan and stay focused on his dream of putting electric lights into homes around the world. Something in him believed that he could do it.

Don"t ever assume it was easy""not for Thomas Edison, Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Babe Ruth, Amelia Earhart, Susan B. Anthony, Joan of Arc, Martin Luther King, Jr., Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama . . . or even for your own parents! There are millions of empowered people who have blessed our world by stepping into their power""we just don"t know their names. Whether your aspiration is to do something on a global, national, regional scale, or on a level in your own backyard, your dreams matter . . . and manifesting those dreams takes effort. Don"t ever kid yourself!

What I remind myself of is that it takes more drudgery to get up every day and go to a job you hate. It takes more exertion to live in an overweight body, dependent on medication. I know firsthand that it"s downright draining to be in an unfulfilling relationship or to be around someone who is negative or condescending. To me, that"s far harder than the energy required to keep the faith, believe in your dream, and take action! Nobody ever said it was going to be easy . . . but what"s the alternative?

Are you ready to stop waiting for someone . . . anyone . . . to wake up and notice you""notice your talents, needs, wants, and desires? Are you ready to accept yourself for who you are (for all your supposed faults, weaknesses, addictions, fears, syndromes, and dysfunctions) and love yourself regardless? If so, you are ready to become an empowered person! You"re ready to begin creating a magnificent life!

I"m sure you"ve given yourself too many "outs" in the past""too many permissible excuses, but they just don"t cut it anymore. You have a choice: to keep doing what you"ve been doing or to do something you"ve never done before. Sure, this may scare you and maybe you"re not exactly sure what to do yet. You"ll find out. You"ll make the calls, do the research, and discover your next steps. You don"t have to know the whole journey today; you just need to begin moving in the right direction.

Remind yourself that you"re worth more than you"ve been. Your life is worth more than you"ve been living. Don"t beat yourself up, guilt yourself, or blame others for your situation. It is what it is, and you"ve learned so much along the way. You"re not going to wait for anyone to give you permission to be you. You"re not going to wait anymore for someone to come along and give you the money you need to start that business, set you up on that blind date, or fix your dysfunctional family. You"re taking charge. You"re going to treat yourself the way you want to be treated and stop resisting yourself and your dreams. You"ll no longer resist asking for help when you need it or doing the things that may feel a little uncomfortable.

From this day forward, assume complete accountability for your life. You must take charge of it and do what you need to do to create a life that is genuinely yours: a life that has purpose, meaning, joy, and value. You will no longer rob yourself of your dignity, integrity, and self-respect by blaming, waiting, hoping, and praying that someone will give you the things you want. You know that if it"s going to be, it"s up to me.

You know that to achieve an empowered life, you must reach higher. You must step out of your comfort zone and your need to seek permission to live your greatest life. Make a list each evening, just before going to bed, of the seven essential action steps that you need to take the next day""seven steps that will bring you closer to your goals. Start each morning with the most important step.

You are the master of your destiny, the captain of your ship. Every choice you make (or don"t make) is yours. Never give up!

Getting What You Want

 by Elizabeth Wilson..

Improving self image is a significant tool which you must work on if you want to obtain your goals in life. Whatever your plan is whether to get a high paying career or to buy something you have been longing for, you need to input your time and effort. Time and effort are important things you need to put in to be able to improve self image. In improving self image, there are some things which you need to consider developing first. These few things pertain to self confidence and reliability. Before you decide running for your goals, you need to make sure first that you are confident enough. You also need to be reliable in order to gain trust and respect from the people around especially those you need in realizing your plans.Building up Self ConfidenceIn order to develop self confidence, you need to come up with self esteem affirmations. These affirmations are things which can help you learn how to value yourself more than how you normally do. If you believe in yourself so much, you will not be scared to face whatever challenge life may offer you. Some of the effective affirmations which you should practice telling yourself every morning are:1. I am happy.2. I am successful with my life.3. I am always the best.4. I can do everything and reach my goals.5. I am lucky in life.6. I am proud of myself.By saying these self esteem affirmations to yourself every morning, you will slowly boost your self confidence. It may take time but if you are so dedicated and passionate about making yourself a better person, you will never notice the time at all. Every individuals needs to be reliable to gain trust and respect from people. There are times when you need other people's help to make you successful with reaching your goal. These people must see you first as a reliable person before they trust you and help you with what you need.Reliability is a very effective tool that helps in improving self image. To establish reliability, you need to fulfill every promise that you made. If you have told someone that you are going to do something, you need to get it done as expected. Never promise someone with something that you are unsure to do. It is important that you need to feel sure about something first before you will promise it to someone. To help you become a reliable person, you need to do things with positive thinking. If you are optimistic enough to think that all things will go well, you will find it easy to perform and fulfill your promise. Doing things with positive thinking enables you to predict before you can say yes at something to do.If you want to accomplish your plans in life earlier, you need to be commit your time and effort and be willing enough to work on your reliability and self confidence. You need to create a positive environment where you always do things with positive thinking. When the time comes that you have developed a strong background of reliability and self confidence, you will definitely realize your plans earlier than you have expected.
