Depression and Social Networks

 By Karina Knight

Depression is a very dangerous disease. It is psychological disease that can destroy your life. People who suffer from this illness can lose the life meaning. They are always very passive. Nothing is interesting for them. They do not like to communicate with anybody. Such kind people spend a lot of time in front of TV set and do not like to leave home. Depression can cause insomnia. If nobody helps depressed people, long period depression can lead to suicide. Therefore, people whose friends suffer from this illness should do their best in order to help depressed people to get over this disease.
Thanks to my observations, I have made conclusion that social networks attract depressed people because it allows them do not leave their homes and at the same time to communicate with people. Social network is virtual reality that creates perception that you have many friends. The network helps forget to you that you are not alone. However, it does not treat your psychological health. Moreover, from my point of view, it exaggerates situation.
I recommend people do not spend in social networks much time. Try to have meeting with real people. It is more interesting and useful.
Communication in the networks is very predictable. People use standard phrases, such as "Hi!", "How are you?", "What are you doing?", "Cool photo" and a lot of "smile". Oh! I think in near future these words will lose their real meaning.
For example, one of my friends has a personal page in Facebook. He has almost 500 "friends". He communicates with them every day via Internet. As a result, he spends all his evening at home. Moreover, his "friends" also do not want to go somewhere. If I try to offer him to go to cinema, he always refuses because he prefers to sit at home and communicate with world via social networks.

What Is the Difference Between Being Arrogant and Being Confident?

By Seth Czerepak

 Photo: sharpradio.com

You probably already know that without confidence, you have MUCH fewer options in your life. In fact, self-doubt might just be the most crippling limitation that you'll ever face in life. It limits your ability to ask for and to receive the things that you want and to assert and stand up for yourself.  Self-doubt can limit your options for having good romantic relationships, earning respect from others, earning career opportunities and so many other things. Nevertheless, as important as confidence is, few people know how to develop it. Some even opt for the counterfeit, which is of course arrogance.
Building genuine confidence requires a solid understanding of the difference between real confidence and arrogance. Let's start with one thing which makes all the difference between the two...

The One Difference Between Confidence and Arrogance

The most pronounced difference between confident people and arrogant people is this: arrogant people's assertive behaviours are an attempt to validate themselves in the eyes of others.  On the other hand, confident people don't care what others think of them, they have nothing to prove and even if they did, it wouldn't be for the sake of validating themselves. This is why they have the freedom to be assertive and to command respect from people and, most important, to step up and speak openly about what they want and what they deserve.
Just imagine, how much easier would it be for you to be bold and assertive if you had NO need to be validated by other people? You would never have to worry about rejection or ridicule or failure or all those things which cause a person to be self-conscious. This is what gives a person the power to have rock solid, untouchable confidence. In other words, people who have nothing to prove to others have nothing to lose, and this gives them the courage to put themselves out there and to go after the things that they want.

The Switch from Arrogant to Confident

You can easily tell if you are acting out of arrogance or out of confidence by asking yourself this question: am I acting out of the desire to validate myself to others? If so, it will impossible to display true confidence indefinitely. By checking yourself to see if you're attempting to validate yourself, you can move from being arrogant and self-absorbed to being genuinely confident. In other words, self-awareness as to how you're measuring your own value is the beginning of building confidence.
When you measure your own value by exterior things such as the opinions and the influences of others, it's impossible to be confident. However, when you let go of the need to be validated by others or by circumstances, you develop the fearlessly magnetic skill of self-confidence.

Stress and anxiety can be a root cause of hemorrhoids developing. Natural home remedy cures, over the counter products, and surgery are effective ways to treat, cure, and remove a hemorrhoid. First experience with depressive mood

 by rachel.broune

Photo: cinnamonbums.wordpress.com

Feelings of sadness are normal, appropriate and even necessary during life's setbacks or losses. Or you may feel blue or unhappy for short periods of time without reason or warning, which also is normal and ordinary. A depressive disorder is an illness that involves the body, mood, and thoughts. It affects the way a person eats and sleeps, the way one feels about oneself, and the way one thinks about things. A depressive disorder is not the same as a passing blue mood. It is not a sign of personal weakness or a condition that can be willed or wished away. People with a depressive illness cannot merely "pull themselves together" and get better. Without treatment, symptoms can last for weeks, months, or years. Appropriate treatment, however, can help most people who suffer from depression.

Depression can happen to anyone of any age, race, class or gender. It afflicts almost 19 million Americans each year, and up to one in five American women will suffer from clinical depression at some point in her life. Women are two to three times more likely than men to suffer from depression. Many women first experience symptoms of depression during their 20s and 30s. Once you experience depression, there's a 50 percent chance that you'll be depressed again at some point in your life.

One reason that treatment for depression is inadequate is that many people do not know or are confused about where to seek mental health treatment. Another reason is that many individuals do not perceive depression as a real medical condition that should or can be treated. Also, there is still a social stigma attached to mental illnesses like depression. These perceptions are wrong. Depression is a potentially life-threatening disorder and a woman does not have to "just live with it."

Women experience depression about twice as often as men. Many hormonal factors may contribute to the increased rate of depression in women particularly such factors as menstrual cycle changes, pregnancy, miscarriage, postpartum period, pre-menopause, and menopause. Many women also face additional stresses such as responsibilities both at work and home, single parenthood, and caring for children and for aging parents.

Although men are less likely to suffer from depression than women, 6 million men in the United States are affected by the illness. Men are less likely to admit to depression, and doctors are less likely to suspect it. The rate of suicide in men is four times that of women, though more women attempt it. In fact, after age 70, the rate of men's suicide rises, reaching a peak after age 85.

Learn Stillness and Silence

 by sharon eiffel

Photo: prats09.wordpress.com

Silence is a very powerful and useful exercise particularly in modern life. Through silence we enter into contact with our greater self. Our greater self knows no limitations, is pure in essence and the more we enter that world the more tranquillity we will begin to experience in our lives. We set ourselves from the ordinary and acknowledge the existence of something greater.

To acquire stillness you simply exercise overall self-control in all areas of your life. With experience, you will find that slipping into silence just comes naturally. You don’t need to force going into silence or be anxious about it. Simply relax and let go. Pay attention to your breathing and breathe gently and while doing this quietly acknowledge the presence of a greater force. Feel peace, feel harmony and enter a state of calm. It is recommended to put aside at least half an hour each day to go into silence. However, you may still practise silence even at work, or on a bus or even whilst in a queue. Just teach yourself to use those spare moments in the day, whether 2 minutes or even a minute. Within that time, just enter an attitude of peace, acknowledge the existence of God, and appreciate all that is around you. For a moment just stop and be quiet.

Set yourself free from the modern norm of rushing and impatience. Just choose to relax, to enjoy things like waiting at a traffic light and use these little gaps to enter silence. Instead of being constantly on the rush, relax and know that all will be fine. The benefits of this are enormous; you will no longer be so stressed out by the queues or the traffic. Even though if you are running late, there is no amount of stressing or swearing which will make it better. Adopt an attitude of stillness always.

Just doing this, is an empowering exercise which teaches our minds that there is a Higher Power, so when a problem confronts us we don’t stress; simply because we are aware of a greater power. Automatically, we will switch to our inner self for all the solutions. By regularly switching into silence we gradually gain poise, such that outward events will not determine our behaviour or our feelings. We will turn to the Great Within for all our needs. There is great wisdom in this statement from the Bible, ‘Be still and know that I am God’.

Facts and Fallacies About Depression

 by pattrickjhonson

Photo: wn.com

Depression among young Americans has come to be known as the common cold of mental illnesses. It is one of the fastest growing problems in U.S. culture, yet it is among the most misunderstood of the mental disorders. Myths and misperceptions about the disease abound. Consider these: True depression is not a natural reaction to crisis and loss. Depression is a pervasive and systemic biological problem that results in deep-seated pessimism and feelings of helplessness, despair, and lethargy, sometimes coupled with agitation. Victims may have problems at work or difficulties in relationships. Symptoms may come and go, and the severity will fluctuate, but they do not simply go away Depressed people forget what being normal feels like. Crisis and loss can lead an already depressed person over the edge to suicide or other problems, but crisis and loss do not inevitably result in depression.

People will not snap out of depression by using a little willpower. Telling a depressed person to snap out of it is like telling a diabetic to produce more insulin. Medical intervention in the form of antidepressant drugs and therapy is often necessary for recovery. Remember that depression is the leading cause of suicide in the United States, and even with treatment, more than half of those who have it will eventually get it again. Understanding the seriousness of the disease and supporting victims in their attempts to recover are key elements of support.

Frequent crying is not a hallmark of depression. Some people who are depressed bear their burdens in silence, or may even be the life of the party. Some depressed individuals don't cry at all. Rather, biochemists theorize that crying may actually ward off depression by releasing chemicals that the body produces as a positive response to stress.

Depression is not "all in the mind." Depression isn't a disease of weak-willed, powerless people. In fact, research has shown that genetics plays a critical role in the development of severe depression. Data suggest that depressive illnesses originate with an inherited chemical imbalance in the brain. In addition, some physiological conditions, such as thyroid disorders, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and certain types of cancer, often have depressive side effects. Certain medications also are known to prompt depressive-like symptoms.

It is not true that only in-depth psychotherapy can cure longterm clinical depression. No single psychotherapy method works for all cases of depression.
