Napolean Hill said "There is one quality that one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants, and a burning desire to possess it." No truer words were spoken, but lets break it down a little more. I think most successful people would agree with the above statement. Those that have succeeded, by most standards in life, can probably identify with what Napolean Hill said. But what are some of the qualities successful people share that we can point to as a common thread? I've decided to focus on 5 of these traits. There are certain to be more but these tend to be the most commonly observed.
1. You get whatever you think about the most. Famous successful people from history bear this out. Roman Emperor, Marcus Aurelius said, "a man's life is dyed by the color of his thoughts,"' and the Buddha commented that, "All that a man is comes from his thoughts."' Whatever you think about most consistently and with purpose and emotion tends to expand"' discipline your mind to focus predominantly on what you desire in life.
2. An attitude of gratitude will take you a long way. Melodie Beattie said, "Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity.... It turns problems into gifts, failures into success, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow."' Be in awe of all the good you have already created in your life and the more you are grateful for that - the more that will flow freely into your life.
3. Take full responsibility for the emotional state that you choose to embrace each day.You choose your emotional state each and every day. Believe it or not, no one can make you feel anything you do not want to feel. You are the captain of your thoughts, so decide to embrace those emotions that propel you toward your stated goal.
4. There is never any scarcity of opportunity, but rather there is only scarcity of resolve to seize the opportunities that knock on our door every day. Scarcity does not exist unless we choose to embrace it"'therefore, it is better to never embrace scarcity only embrace the possibility for abundance.
5. Trust yourself to make the right decisions. By doing so, you trust in the very wisdom that created you. Dare to become a no limit person and abandon the idea of focusing on limitations. You already are complete, whole and perfect. Trust in the perfection of your life.

How To End Depression Stigma
By: Christopher Green
Photo: stevenaitchison.co.uk
For many sufferers, depression brings on feelings of guilt and shame and because of these feelings, they will not seek help. But are these feelings valid? Lack of understanding – both in sufferers and non-sufferers – clouds the issue. So here’s how to end the stigma associated with depression, stress, and anxiety.
1. The majority of people in our society experience psychological problems during their lives: Problems from childhood with parents and siblings; stress at work; marital breakdown; losing loved ones and of course, making mistakes. Very few people go through life without experiencing mental trauma of some description. So there’s nothing odd or unique happening here, indeed, depressive illnesses are as common as colds. More than 20 million sufferers in the USA every year bear this out.
2. These are real illnesses. There’s no stigma associated with diabetes, asthma, or allergies for example, so why should there be with these? Just like the above illnesses, depression, anxiety and stress have specific causes that can be addressed. You wouldn’t think an asthma sufferer could just “snap out of it”, yet many people say this to depression and anxiety sufferers. Lack of understanding again causes such a reaction and it is the reaction that is wrong, not the sufferer.
3. Suffering a depressive episode is not your fault so why feel guilty? You didn’t wake up one morning and think “right, I know, I’ll become anxious from now on”. It doesn’t happen like that. No one CHOOSES depression, it can happen to people just like many illnesses do. And like other illnesses, depression can be treated very effectively. But not one sufferer is to blame. You wouldn’t blame someone who hadn’t been taught to read or write, you wouldn’t blame someone who suffered from hay fever so why blame yourself and feel guilty because you’re suffering a stressful illness?
4. If you own a car and it’s broken down you go to a mechanic. If you fall and break your arm, you go to casualty to get it repaired. If you have toothache you go to a dentist to get it sorted. Stressful illnesses can also be fixed, so don’t let guilt or shame stop you from getting help. Just as your body can become ill so can your mind. It isn’t permanent and just as your body can be fixed so can your mind.
5. Many sufferers believe that treating depression is a futile exercise because once you have depression, you have it for life. This simply isn’t true and the depression itself feeds this feeling of helplessness. And believing that depression is incurable further exacerbates the feelings of guilt and shame and fuels the depression. Depression has a specific cause and this root cause can be effectively treated so that depression can be beaten once and for all.
6. Change the way you look at these problems. I know from experience that at the time, stressful illnesses can be overwhelming and you can’t see a way out or how anything good can come of it. But now, I’m glad I had that 5-year period because I’ve come out of it stronger. I learned how to beat depression and deal with the very trying circumstances I was faced with. I now know how to cope with the various trials and tribulations life throws at all of us and those 5 years of depression and anxiety have given me a greater understanding about myself and others. Sure I hated it at the time. But by getting help and learning how depression had entered my life, I became stronger than my depression. One thing that really helped me was to change the way I thought about what was happening to me. Instead of thinking it was something that no good could ever come from, I looked at it as something that was going to help me to become stronger. What helped me to think this way was discovering how many other people used their illnesses and disabilities to do something positive with their lives. I realized that the same principle could be applied to stressful and depressive illnesses and that they too can be used in a positive way.
The above points clearly demonstrate that the stigmas associated with depressive and stressful illnesses are completely false and I hope you use them to help you win your fight with stress, depression or anxiety.
Until next time.

Depression in Adolescence
By: Janie Jonah
Photo: healthjockey.com
Growing up is something we all have to face. This often brings with it the consequences that are not particularly welcome. Our biggest changes occur in our youth and in particularly during adolescence where we undergo, huge changes, not only physical but also emotional and psychological.
This can be very overwhelming and difficult for teens to cope with. Particularly within the family setting the teen can feel isolated as he may very well feel he is going through these changes alone. This can affect his mood and so the risks of developing depression is heightened. Some of the factors that can contribute to a teenager developing depression are teens suffering from anxiety and those with learning difficulties or attention deficit disorder.
Depression in teens can be difficult to diagnose as being moody is a very common symptom of adolescent development. With all these emotions building up inside, a teenager may find it embarrassing and feel ashamed to ask for help. They might also not be aware of the symptoms of depression and may not recognize that they have an illness that is actually very common and one for which there is a considerable amount of help available to sufferers of depression.
Depression is a very serious illness and can result in attempts to take there own life as well as successfully committing suicide. The fact that anti-depressants are not recommended to people under the age of 18 means that teenagers are more at risk of committing suicide because anti-depressants can cause severe side-effects and are thus not suitable for people under the age of 18. Being vigilant and keeping a check on teens is very important as it is quite difficult to recognize depression in teens.
Some of the symptoms of depression that you should keep in mind are teens talking about suicide of actions that are self-harming. A deterioration in performance at school as well as a problem with authority are also symptoms of depression in teens. Other factors that can contribute to poor performance at school are a lack of motivation and enthusiasm, a lack of concentration and forgetfulness, restlessness and agitation. Other factors that are often seen as an separate problem on their own, which many not realize that they can be a symptom or sign of a deeper problem are alcohol and drug abuse and problems with anger, and a lack of anger management skills. Which is understandable as youths have yet so much to learn about life. It can however, be relatively easy to pick up on teens that withdraw themselves, initially from their friends, and then past pleasurable activities along with changes to sleeping and eating routines.
There are many other signs of depression that can indicate a deeper underlying cause of the symptom. It must be noted however that symptoms experienced don't always point to depression, especially if the teen has only one or two symptoms. This may not indicate depression and thus one need only treat the symptom in isolation. Some of the other signs that may point to depression are frequent crying for no reason at all. Some sufferers can't bear color and choose to wear black clothing. They show little or no interest in themselves and neglect their personal appearance and hygiene. Some of the physical symptoms not usually associated with depression but can occur frequently are dizziness, lightheadedness, back pains, headaches, feeling nauseous and having stomach aches. They may also talk about running away from home or following through with action.
It is important to be vigilant and remember that it is better to be safe than sorry, so if you know someone who exhibits a number of symptoms described above, whether they are an adolescent or not, help them by seeking a health professional that can examine them and decide on a suitable course of action or medication that is appropriate for the diagnosis. Remember, it's never too late to help someone with depression. You may just save a life.

What's Your Addiction?
By: Angelo Campione
Photo: sodahead.com
We usually think of drug or alcohol addicts when we think of addictions but you may be surprised on how much broader addictions are.
Firstly the definition of an addiction is "anything that compels you, in actions or thoughts, and you don’t feel you have control over it." With this definition, it means that thoughts and feelings can be addiction as well!
If you can go with this for a moment, you see that all addictions are a reflection of a mental state, they’re either visible or non-visible. The visible addictions cover things like food, sex, work, exercise, money and drugs. Non-visible addictions cover things like drama, worry, grief, attention and approval
The key behind these addictions, is that there’s always a perceived survival element that the mind creates. For example if you grew up in family where you derived love through eating, you may now find yourself overweight because it became an addiction to feel love in this way and therefore to survive (the mind is formed from childhood and so these perceptions of survival are instilled at that point).
We can usually tell when someone has a visible addiction (although not necessarily within ourselves), although the non-visible ones that are a bit tricky (and even more so for ourselves).
So lets look at some examples of the non-visible ones: 1. Drama: lets say that as a child you found yourself in situations where you felt discounted and became a victim of situations and now as an adult, you still carry the victim feelings. These feelings give rise to situations in daily life that are seemingly beyond your control like getting delayed on your way to work because of a car accident that held up the traffic and as a result you miss your morning meeting with the boss. This has you feel angry, frustrated or helpless and you vent with a colleague through "complaining". The drama that seemed to have nothing to do with you, now gives you the opportunity to be justified in complaining and this makes you right and the situation wrong and this actually feels good. It feels good because we feel power in being right and therein lies the addiction, to the power that’s underneath the situation (and of course the ego gets to survive in this also). 2. Grief: lets say that as a child, you felt that nothing you did was ever good enough for your parents and now as an adult, you still carry the feelings of worthlessness in not being good enough. These feelings may lead to a situation with your partner, where they come along and see you working on something and say, "Oh, why don’t you do it this way…" This triggers the old feelings of not being good enough and boom, you react by snapping back, saying something like "leave me alone, keep your comments to yourself, get lost, haven’t you got anything better to do, etc". The reaction is usually out of proportion to the comment and there’s generally no conscious thought, simply an explosive reaction based on a need to protect yourself. The reaction arises from a place of power within you and this deep power is what feels good at a deeper level, it doesn’t matter what’s happening on the surface, the addiction again is to the power (and again your ego gets to survive). 3. Worry: lets say that as a child you were constantly told to be careful that this or that might happen and out of that you created a belief system that the world was unsafe and now as an adult, you still carry feelings of fear or concern for how things will turn out if you take or don’t take a certain action. These feelings may lead to a situation where you meet a friend that is excited about a new business proposition and offers you an opportunity to enter it. You then do one of two things, either you agree out of fear of missing out (without doing your due diligence) and then spend a heap of time worrying about whether it was the right thing to do or, you are paralysed through analysis paralysis and don’t make a decision out of fear as you worry about all the possible bad outcomes that may eventuate. Either way the worrying puts you in touch with feelings from childhood and this has you feel a level of comfort and control because the worry pretends to be important and this again has you feel a power within you and thus the addiction is again to power so that the ego survives. 4. Attention and Approval: lets say that as a child you felt that you were not given the love you needed and now as an adult, you still carry the feelings of being unlovable. This may lead to taking actions out of a hope that somehow others give you the love you need to fill the void and take care of the pain you experienced as a child. An example would be, you buy a gift for a friend and when you give it to them they don’t express their appreciation the way you’d hoped and this leaves you feeling resentful, hurt or angry, your action of giving was done with an expectation of a certain response or reaction so that you could get the attention or approval and thereby feel the love. When this doesn’t happen, it puts you in touch with the pain from childhood and the resentfulness, hurt or anger again puts you in touch with your power and so again the addiction is to this sense of power that is derived in such a way that looks like anything but power.
Essentially, each one of us is born into this world as light within the form of a baby, with limitless potential at our disposal. As we grow layers of limitations are placed over that light until the light is almost completely obscured as we identify with an ego. The effect is that we lose sight of the light (the Truth of who we are) and accept that this body and these circumstances are who we are. It’s not and it takes great power to create the illusion that shows us as anything other than the light.
And so, what I’m saying here is that whether we’re aware of it or not, we already have a knowing that we are extremely powerful underneath it all. We simply haven’t become masters of that power yet, so we unconsciously use what we’ve learned from a very young age to access it and we did that through what we consider to be negative or unpleasant circumstances that take on addictive qualities on the surface, i.e. things we don’t have control over and are compelled to do. The irony or paradox is that it’s these very situations that help us peel away the layers of limitation until we do allow the light to shine through.
In the next article I’ll discuss how to be free from addictions.

Anxiety? No need to worry.
By: Catya Asilo
Photo: lifecoachingforchristianwomen.com
Reflexes go awry, bodily reactions prove to be dysfunctional, and behavior patterns seems meandering – a blend of these unusual occurrences and, by no doubt, you're having anxiety attacks. Anxiety is characterized to be continuous – and often times poignant - fears and worries that tends to interfere with normal human behavior or activities. Anxiety, as proven medically, though may seem to be inconsequential, may cause severe problems like alcoholism and low self-esteem. These complications, as studies prove, may lead to lethal consequences.
Though anxiety, or its possible repercussions, may pose to be lethal, studies show it's curable in nature and responds to treatment well. Medical breakthroughs and scientific researches offers a wide array of answers that ranges from anxiety treatment to coping with anxiety.
Anxiety treatments can be done through medications such as anti-anxiety drug, anti-depressants, and beta-blockers. Anti-anxiety drugs are prescribed for brief relief against anxiety attacks and it is also used to hamper anxiety's severe effects. Anti-depressants give the brain a boost to let it combat mind-paralyzing effect of anxiety. Beta-blockers, which are fondly used by performers to deal with stage fright and “weak” knees, are good combatants against physical symptoms of anxiety.
These may seem to be the positive contribution of anxiety treatments through medications but medical people wary in too much dependence on it. Anxiety medications can promote drug dependence and, with this, incalculable possible adverse effects are not had to imagine. They also advise people to take precaution by consulting their regular physician or family doctor.
Herbal medication alternatives and other natural forms of anxiety-curing regimen are also encouraged as forms of anxiety treatment. CBT or Cognitive Brain Therapy is one of the leading anxiety treatments. If a person is suffering from anxiety problems, CBT will help that individual to identify and overcome the traumatic experiences and notions that inhibits the individual from working through his fears. Constant exposure with this therapy would help you acquire certain skills that will strengthen your sense of emotional equilibrium and thus, you gain control over of your anxiety dilemma.

Are You Suffering from Major Depression?
By: Clyde Rodriguez
Photo: diseaseaday.com
Nowadays most of the people feel sad due to the problems they face. This is what is called depression. We are living in a world of sadness.
Of course losing your job and facing home foreclosure or just wondering if it's going to happen to you next can make anyone depressed! But these things cannot accurately be called major depression; there's more to the condition than just feeling anxious and afraid.
The outside factors also play a role in influencing the brain to release the right amount of certain chemicals which are very important. These chemicals help the brain to regulate. This is called major depression.
There are many different types of depression, from postpartum depression which of course occurs after a woman has had a baby, as well as bipolar disorder which is marked by wild mood swings of euphoria to near suicidal thoughts, and many other types in between.
Major depression is one of the most severe forms of depression as it is marked by extreme low moods. A person with this condition may not necessarily be suicidal but struggles every day just with getting out of bed, and not just on the worst of Mondays but also when they even have something fun and enjoyable planned.
Patients with major depression often see no point to any activity, even hobbies they once enjoyed. They may also have no feelings towards those around them; they often feel numbness rather than closeness when it comes to their spouse and even their own children. Very often things they would have once taken care of now are ignored, and this might include their own personal care and hygiene.
Depression with it brings other emotional distress. It is rather difficult to tackle the disease and it is terrible when the patient’s family doesn’t support. People think that you will also end up in depression if they help the patient.
It is very drastic for the patient to undergo everything alone without any support. We need to understand that this condition was not chosen by the patient but it is a disease. Also the patient needs to abide by his responsibilities and not give up.
Proper medication needs to be taken when it comes to this condition. You need not feel shy about your condition if you want to get better. Also now we have more than enough products in the market which will help you get better soon with very few side effects than before.
If you are experiencing symptoms of major depression, then you must find a cure for depression as soon as possible. If you delay, you will only make things worse. So stop thinking, and start taking action on it!

Fed Up With Social Anxiety Disorder?
By: Roseanna Leaton

Are you suffering from social anxiety disorder and fed up with visiting different therapists? Or, worse still, afraid to go to see a therapist? What can you do from the safety of your own home which will help you to work on your inner feelings, beliefs and emotions, thereby enabling you to have the inner confidence to get out there amongst other people, feeling comfortable in your own skin?
Social anxiety Disorder has been given a lot more attention by the medical profession in the last ten years. If you suffer from it, you know what it feels like and how it affects every area of your life. It causes considerable distress and discomfort as the sufferer worries about what other people may think about them. This fear of being judged and fear of becoming embarrassed can be very debilitating.
For some this fear is only experienced in certain circumstances, with certain triggers, perhaps only when in the vicinity of "people in authority". For others it may just be certain places which act as the trigger to their inner turmoil; maybe a weekly essential visit to the supermarket or just having to walk down the street is enough to get palms sweating and heart palpitating. For some, just the thought of having to leave the house is enough to set this uncomfortable ball rolling. The myriad symptoms of social anxiety may be triggered by actual reality or just anticipation of something which may or may not happen. In either case, the symptoms experienced are equally real.
Whether the anxiety experienced is generalized or more specific it is still very uncomfortable and debilitating for the sufferer. Most people have serious difficulty in their quest to overcome it. This is not surprising because as you focus on trying to overcome social anxiety you inevitably spend more time thinking about it, and what you think about tends to become "bigger" in your mind and therefore in your life as well.
This is a central aspect of how your mind works. Think about it for a moment. If you are thinking about buying a particular car, for instance, perhaps a BMW or Lexus, you will suddenly become aware of every car that you see which fits that description. Suddenly there seem to be so many more BMW or Lexus cars on the road! Another "thing" which your mind does all of the time, without fail, is that if you try to not do something, you will have an overwhelming instinct to do exactly that which you are trying not to do. Try as hard as you can for a moment to NOT see a giraffe...What happened? Did you see a long neck, by any chance?!
Applying this to your attempt to overcome social anxiety disorder will help you to understand why the task can be so difficult. The more you think about it the more it happens, and the more you try to not think about it the more it happens as well. Added to this you probably have no idea why you "got it" in the first place. There will be a reason why. A symptom does not occur without cause, although you are most likely unaware at a conscious level of what that cause may be. Your subconscious mind will however know what the cause is and has created these patterns of behavior which you no longer wish to have.
How can you go about altering these subconscious patterns of feelings and behavior? A visit to your local analytical hypnotherapist (please check for the one with the highest level of relevant credentials and the most experienced) will show you how to relax in hypnosis, thereby accessing the workings of your inner mind, your subconscious, and then guide you to uncoil the springs of cause and effect which led to these symptoms being experienced. This will help you to understand why it all happened and will relieve a lot of the anxiety experienced.
But you are likely to still require a certain amount of mind re-training for you to feel completely comfortable in social situations. It's a bit like you know you no longer need to feel like "that"...but you don't know how you should expect to feel either. It can feel like you are in "limbo". Hypnosis downloads are amazingly effective in training your brain to expect to feel as you want to feel. They are inexpensive (a major bonus in the current environment), easy to use and quick to work. You really can learn a whole host of mental skills which will enable you to feel comfortable in every situation which you may encounter. I created my "complete confidence program" of hypnosis downloads for this very reason - to enable everyone to have access to learning all the mental skills needed to be confident in life at very little cost.
Whether you decide to visit a therapist in person or not, hypnosis downloads are a great choice for you to make to get your mind working on overcoming any type of social phobia. Hypnosis is in itself a state of relaxation providing welcome relief from anxiety and, more importantly, provides access to the subconscious mind, enabling the easy retraining of your mind to provide you with powerful inner and outer hypnosis confidence. There's a free hypnosis download which you can get from my website and try it for yourself.
