Connection... it is such an integral part of our lives. There is a human need and desire to connect with others and feel like we matter and make a difference. When we have people in our lives that care, we often feel a sense of belonging. We feel more 'useful' when someone needs us. We often even feel more confident and self assured because we feel 'necessary' in the world and have a purpose.
Think about the people that you want to be connected to in your life. Are they a significant other, children, family, friends, peers, mentors? Who plays an integral role in your life? How could your life be better with more of these people? Maybe it's not about more but improved quality. Take a look at the connections that mean the most to you and figure out how you can make them even better. What can YOU do to connect more or at a deeper level to the people that matter most and will make a difference for you? How can YOU help others get where they want to go and create a win/win?
Being conscious about who you connect with and how you connect with them will allow you to create more of what you want in your life and less of what you don't want.
"Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down." ~ Oprah Winfrey
Who are the people in your life that you care most about? Write their names down. Beside each name write about the connection you have with that person. Why are they important to you in your life? How do they inspire you? How do you feel better about yourself as a result of the relationship?
Doing this exercise will help you take a look at your life and see if your connections are working for you? If they are already great connections, appreciate them and celebrate them. If they are not so great, find ways that you can make them better. If you want a particular connection to be stronger, find ways that will allow you to create that.
When you check-in with the level of connection you have, you take your control back to consciously make it more and more of what you desire. If you recognize that some connections you currently have are more destructive than constructive, start spending less time with those people and more time with the ones that lift you up and inspire your life.
Consciously think about the people you are connecting with and the level at which you are connected. Make each one more of what you want each day and you will always create more of a life you love!
