Want to stop tension headaches? Get tension headaches every time you feel stressed? Tension headaches may not be as severe as migraine headaches but if they happen often enough, they can cause you to feel depressed and moody.

Tension headaches are probably one of the most common types of headache, yet a lot of people do not have any idea what it really is. In truth, the specific cause oftension headaches still remains unknown. Medical experts used to believe that tension headache root from muscle contraction in your face and neck area that may be caused by anxiety, tension, stress or other strong emotions. Modern studies by the International Headache Society emphasizes that there is no connection between head pain and muscle tension as evident in several electromyogram tests. Studies conducted show that there were no relevant muscle activities that may these headaches.

There are a number of over-the-counter pain reliefs from headaches. The most popular drugs for anxiety tension headaches are aspirin, ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Examples of these common brands in the market are Advil, Tylenol and Motrin, among others. These medications are actually pain relievers. You can buy them without prescriptions in your local drugstore. For stronger dosages, you will need to see your doctor to get a prescription. There is only one precaution when using painkillers, never overuse them! It would only cause the pain to get even worse.

Most tension headaches are triggered by anxiety or stress. It can actually last for as long as a week or as short as 30 minutes. If you have headache attacks all the time, it may be a case of chronic headache that can continue for years.

The best way to stop tension headaches is obviously to learn ways to manage stress better. Relaxation techniques and exercises such as yoga and meditation are very helpful. If you find that your environment is too stressful, you may also consider changing it or taking frequent breaks from it.
