Maximizing the Use of Your Time

 By Rabison Shumba

I have come across many people who seem to have a lot of time on their hands. Some genuinely express that they are not sure how to spend time. I have spoken before of time stealer or things that take your time but have not highlighted some of the areas you can spend your time constructively.
- Enrich your mind, read a book, go to college - This is the best thing you can ever do to your brain. Your brain has a limitless capacity to store information. Always enrich yourself by reading widely. Attend college to learn deeper the things you desire to specialize in. I have seen people go to college even beyond retirement age. The mind has an insatiable desire to always expand and know more. It is your effort to keep reading that fulfills the quest of your mind to grow.
- Get access to current affairs - watch the news, read the newspaper - Exposure is important. Some of the things that you may be allowing to pass you may be important. You never know when a tender will be in the newspaper and you win that tender. Your job may be hidden in the newspaper. An outbreak of a certain disease may be on the TV news of the day. Get highlights. They will always help you. Know what is going on in the world. Access internet and visit news sites or online newspapers.
- Spend time with those you love - Speak to your children guiding them in the issues of life. Spend time with them in recreational activities. You will learn about them more when they are in an environment where they know they have your undivided attention. Go shopping together. A family that spends time together is a strong healthy family
- Counseling and mentoring others - Allocate time to help and inspire others. People will come to you for help, squeeze them into your schedule. This is a direct investment into mankind. The people you help today become a part of your network that you can rely on at any time in the future.
- Be productive at work - If you have a job, know that you are employed to perform. You are there to bring results not just warm the seats at work. Avoid things that seek to steal your focus. Be deliberate about productivity. You will see promotion and favor in the workplace
- research on specific topic of interest - First find an area of passion. You can then find time dig deeper on certain issues. Join a library an participate in research
- Planning time - plan for your life, planning your day, planning your finances. The quality of your life is determined by the amount of time you spend planning. Many people rush to implement what has not been planned. Carefully consider all the areas of your life where planning is a necessity and work towards that.
- Health and fitness - Life is prolonged when you adhere to health and fitness issues. Never take your life and body for granted.
- Do something you enjoy - It maybe writing a song, playing a guitar, watching a soccer match. Find time to relax. It is important to award yourself such a privilege.
