Depression among Children - Know the Facts

Depression regardless of its cause can also be a cause of obesity. Children suffering from depression stay at home more often. Since they have difficulty relating with other children they prefer to stay at home and watch television instead. They become couch potato. They have the tendency to eat more than what is being required of them. If this continues these children will gain weight above the ideal weight for their age. Overtime, these children become obese. They have less time engaging in physical activities too, which could aggravate their weight problem.

Alcoholism is matter of serious concern, not confined to any group, culture or country. Universally it creates professional, social, financial, legal, medical, psychological, and familial problems. The cost of alcoholism to the society is staggering by any calculations. Lost working days, accidents and related disability, family disrupts and resulting juvenile problems, and direct medical complications of alcohol abuse add up to a significant proportion of loss to nations" economy and well being. Alcoholism thus becomes a complex phenomenon deserving attention from deferent angles.

The case for exercise and health has primarily been made on its impact on diseases such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. However, there has been increasing research into the role of exercise in improving mental well-being, including global self-esteem.

A behavioral problem, such as fighting with parents and getting in trouble in school or with the law, is a major risk factor. Many people wrongly assume that teens who are sensitive and shy are the ones who are prone to suicide. In reality, the arrogant and obnoxious teenager is more prone to self destruction. He may seem to keep the world away in order to protect himself, but his greatest enemy is own lonely and depressed self. Unlike the shy ones, the obnoxious teen can come up with the "guts" to take away his own life.

For people going though depression, doctors often prescribe some common pills. However, FDA has warned that these drugs may lead to Antidepressant Suicides. Some of the most commonly prescribed pills are Prozac fluoxetine, Zoloft sertraline, Paxil paroxetine, Luvox fluvoxamine, Celexa citalopram, Lexapro escitalopram, Wellbutrin bupropion, Flexors venlafaxine, Serzone nefazodone, Remeron mirtazapine. FDA has appealed to pharmaceutical companies manufacturing all these drugs to issue a renewed suicide warning labels, on all these pills.

Depression in children and teenagers must be treated as a disease and should be diagnosed as early as possible. It requires continuous medical attention, and counseling at medical and family levels is a must. Depression among children and teenagers is often treated with cognitive behavioral therapy and interpersonal psychotherapy. Selective serotonin uptake inhibitors like Prozac and Zoloft are often considered to be the most effective strategies in dealing with symptoms of depression prevalent among children and teenagers.

Other causes of depression can include any physical changes that occur to our bodies. Severe medical conditions like Parkinson's disease, heart attacks, strokes and diabetes can make the individual believe that there is nothing worthwhile living for. The idea that your body cannot no longer do the things your mind expects it to do can create and overwhelming desire to believe that life will not be the same and it becomes easy to slip into a negative spiral of emotions but than treat such situations as positive influences on the changing circumstances of life. By feeling depressed the rate of recovery is delayed.
